Honeycomb and Xoom are well ahead of the iPad in terms of software and hardware.

It's going to take a significant upgrade by Apple on both fronts to stay ahead in the tablet wars.

Apple needs to:

- Make significant improvements in the processor (dual core)
- Add significantly more ram (1gb should be minimum)
- Better graphics (on the level of Tegra 2's)
- Lighter (dunno how there)
- Improve the multi tasking abilities, not just simply switching between apps, but letting apps directly communicate with each other
- Widgets... I simply cannot believe the "inventor" of widgets doesn't have them in their mobile devices, yet every other device does
- Better hardware access for software makers
- USB/SD slots
- Higher resolution screen (unlikely to happen until they can double the pixel count)

Why would apple need to do any of that? They are already a year ahead of the other guys these tablets are set to be better then the year old iPad.

I disagree with people who think Motorola Xoom is ahead of iPad. In terms of what really?

It's not the hardware that sells these devices. It's the apps and software.

iPad is a year ahead of competition and it will continue to lead other tablets for next few years.

Apple is never interested in making most powerful tablet in the world. They are interested in making it easy to use and fun to use. Xoom tablet doesn't look like people who are 80 years old can just immediately pick up and use right away.

Honeycomb owns iOS is every way apart from the app store.

Another year of devices coming out that are trying to compete with a device that isn't out yet. Apple will still be a year ahead.

All I want from iPad2 is more Ram, Facetime camera and the battery life still to stay at 10hrs, I don't think it needs all the bells and whistles to stay one of the best tablets of 2011>

Yeah, just watch this 10 minutes video, this is no more video files.

Thanks for posting that link

In all honestly, what that video showed of Honeycomb was very impressive and shows incredible potential.

When I look back at just the 1 screen with icons on it on my iPad against this, well, there is just no comparison.

Apple need to get their finger out and produce something stunning to put up against this.

That looks attention-grabbingly impressive, but like the phones, it feels too busy for me. Yes, I know you can customise to your choosing, but it still looks like eye candy for eye candy's sake. You don't see that level of confusion on a desktop, so why you'd want it on a mobile device is beyond me.
iOS is far from perfect either, but there's a consistent feel throughout, which... Just works, with next to zero learning curve.

Honeycomb DOES NOT EXIST YET IN THE MARKETPLACE.

Android 3.0 tablets DO NOT EXIST YET IN THE MARKETPLACE.

We are talking about future products. Let them release stuff and then we can talk. Until then it's just promises.

That's probably the attitude other tech companies took before the ipad was launched last year.

I thought 2.4 was honeycomb?

These million version numbers confuse me.

3.0 is honeycomb. I think google has split the numbering system that tablet is 3.x and phones are 2.x.

I think it is more how big of a change to the underlining system. 1.x to 2.x was a much longer change than 2.1 to 2.3.

Apple I can already see makes it numbering system based on years even if the changes are rather small and more of a x.0 to x.1 change. But that is more how Apple does things.
There is nothing wrong with it. yearly release is a X.0 and in between is x.1.
OSX has been 10.x every new release.

...just so Apple may actually sell one? Obviously their model hasn't worked.

Good grief, please stop infesting (yes, "infesting") this board with your non-sense!

and lots of TINY places to tap

he kept missing in the demo

The biggest problem for most of these new tablets is that they will be sold through cellular carriers and tied to a wireless broadband contract, which in turn makes the iPad more appealing to the populous.

No they won't. WiFi version of the xoom has been confirmed already.

The only reason the Tab was sold that way was because Google specify that you need phone/3g functionality in order to use the Android market. That requirement will be gone from Honeycomb onwards, allowing the OEMs to do as they please.

Are you a tech company? Neither am I. So it's not important for us to anticipate these things so we can get our factories building a response quickly.

But since we are just tech consumers, it's fine for us to compare the iPad to competition. But where is the competition? We saw lots of announcements, but hardly any shipping products. Nothing wrong with pointing this out. We don't know how much these things will cost, how they will perform, nothing really but spec sheets and carefully orchestrated demos (don't come too close!) and carefully made YouTube videos.

Where's the competition? Just a bunch of announcements and not too many specifics.

You missed the point entirely:

Before the ipad was released Apple competitors were saying the same things about the Apple Tablet.... well that turned out to be a mistake right.

No one knows how the initial Android Tablets will fare but at some point they will probably be competitive with the ipad.

I'm positive Apple takes this challenge seriously knowing that Android is becoming increasingly popular worldwide.

We'll see how it plays out but to dimiss the competition as vaporware......

I'm not dismissing the competition as vaporware, for I do understand they will be released in the future and they will perform the way they were described. But what we don't know is how it will perform in the real world, and how much they will cost. Those trumpeting these tablets as real competition for the iPad don't know these facts either, so I'm just saying let's wait for them to be released before we go around trumpeting things.

They might well be tremendously good tablets at the right price, but we just don't know yet. Release them and then we'll judge them. All I'm saying is to not score this contest as over just yet.

Agreed, over at the Android Forums people are divided over the Xoom Its almost getting better virtual reviews here go figure.

Sounds like you need a computer upgrade, not a tab!:)

i have so much money invested in the ipad at this point with apps, I can't imagine moving to something else.

It does look pretty cool though, the interface looks fast and nice. I really do like it.

What little they showed of the UI was fairly impressive stuff, but as they say the proof is in the pudding and I hope that they're able to give the platform (both Phone and pads) a complete cohesive and intuitive experience and not the rubbish that was the Samsung Tab. I've great faith in Matias Duarte ability to pull it off and his work on WebOS plus his (fearsome, almost Jobs like) reputation demonstrate an individual that's totally focused on the end user satisfaction.

Looking at iOS, does anyone really think that's as good as a tablet UI can be? Seriously, it's basically just the iPhone UI blown up, and that's been looking long in the tooth for about two years now. I'm still amazed that Jobs was satisfied with such a lazy product, it should have been amazing.

Did I say "sell one"?

Apple's products will still most likely be the most popular model in any certain genre. But their overall numbers will slip significantly if they don't continue to push innovation. Do you honestly think the iPad will keep a 90%+ sales of the overall tablet market? Do you think they will perform better if they keep up on features? Do you think they will lose more of the market if they don't keep up on features?

I don't see how anything I'm saying is "infestation" to me it seems like common sense.

In a highly competitive market, in order to be successful, you have to have one of the better products. As of *right now*, the best product out is the iPad. In a few months when Xoom, PlayBook, etc is out, will that still be true? Who knows.

Not with phones anymore. Android outsells the iPhone now.

I hate when Android gets compared against the iPhone since you're comparing an OS vs a hardware. Wh don't they say HTC outsells iPhone or Motorolla Droid. It's like you're comparing a while range of products vs one. How is that a fair comparison?

When you're talking phones it is a fair comparision. Android against iOS since the only phone iOS is on is the iPhone.
