An interesting development. I understand that a good product/service costs money, but I wonder how web-users accustomed to free browsing for years will receive it. Especially nowadays, when browsers need users more than users need browsers (hey Chrome and Edge!) ;)

Hmm, understandable they need some income somehow, on the other side, while the browser has greatly improved since quantum, it's not the best in the market (top 3 could be though) as to make it payable imo. We'll see.

Firefox premium will only be for the few who care. The rest won't be affected.

I run Firefox for iOS since a month or so back for its dark mode. I guess I might switch back to Safari when iOS 13 comes out.

Why? Free Firefox as it is available now is not going away. The premium features are stuff that most user most likely won't ever need.
Never cared about Firefox even before switching to Mac I was using opera. After I tried safari I was hooked, that’s not say it is perfect but much better than Firefox.

How can a browser with no pages open crack up fans to the max?

Firefox is getting attractive again, with its privacy focused features. Now uses the same rendering engine as Chrome IRC.

Not sure I'd pay for the premium features, but the cross platform nature of Firefox is why I use Chrome for some things.

Please get an actual VPN that doesn’t track you and not within the 14 eye like NordVPN or ExpressVPN

NordVPN is Panama.

I'm not sure there's a market for a premium paid browser, while firefox doesn't have the largest following, I wonder if the dedicated folks who do use it, will be willing to pay
Well, Netscape was a paid SW back in the old days.
But I seriously doubt anyone would pay for a browser nowadays.

Great, so now our choices are Edge (Chrome based), Chrome (Spyware), Safari (horrible extension support), or Firefox ($$$).

Yes, and it’s by far the best browser on Windows’s. On Mac I prefer safari.

It’s not true anymore. On the contrary, chrome is now much more of a memory hog than the latest versions of Firefox. And as a plus, Firefox doesn’t spy on you.

Check out Brave Browser:

NordVPN is Panama.

I had to read the original posters comment twice, it is poorly structured or possible misinformed.

Like Nord, it can be better though.

FireFox is still free I use it as a backup to Safari. Never liked Chrome, my privacy is valuable to me. I don’t get people who use Chrome and a VPN. Any VPN will take a minor performance hit while browsing, one gets used to it.

This is misleading, FireFox will still be free, however also have a paid version for those requiring additional features.

Not sure what extensions you are using with Safari, however the ones I use work fine to serve it’s purpose.

I don’t like the other two mentioned.

Dear companies that don’t give a damn I am #subscribedout I just dropped the News+ and Hulu. I just can’t handle any more monthly bills. I feel indentured to my technology.

Way to sensationalize this news, there are free versions of FireFox and also Apple News. If the extra features are not needed then why subscribe, so much free content online like YouTube, etc and you are complaining about subscriptions because you know you don’t want to view ads

A premium feature Firefox could offer that I’d pay for: Access to all paid websites for $8.99/month, where the publishers get $6.25 (75%) of that. It has to be a better deal for publishers than Apple News+ is.

As a developer already pissed at Apple for the 70/30 split, News+’s 50/50 split was a step in the wrong direction, so I refuse to pay for it out of principle. Apple’s monopolies need to end.
Apple.. a monopoly. Funny stuff. And yeah, screw them for not wanting to give you a platform to sell on, cover bandwidth, advertising, etc for free! Stupid companies, man!

Fixed it for you.
Chrome is updated fortnightly usually. "Major" releases monthly. I tried Firefox recently again and the memory usage was double Chrome with similar tabs/windows...

Your comment clearly illustrates absence of knowledge on current browsers landscape.
Sorry but everyone I know or see uses Chrome or Safari as it's already built in.
Firefox is a big no-no

Soon Chrome will permanently remove the API or something similar to that that allow current ad blockers to remove ads before they are displayed on user browser.
What about this move? Chrome eats memory real fast as well.
Read my other quote, I've tried Firefox recently and it was double the usage of Chrome with same tabs/windows.
Horrid and hasn't changed for years.

Chrome is as bad as Firefox when it comes to optimisations at least on Mac. One of very few apps that crank up the fans on my mbp.
I don't have issues with it overworking my 2015 Air. Netflix/Prime, Facebook etc no probs. It feels better optimised than Safari and I sometimes have odd issues with Safari not even working with certain websites

A VPN is something that most users actually have needed for a long while, but they don’t really know what it is. And it costs money now and the Firefox version will also cost. And people have proven that they will use a ‘free’ option even if it compromises their privacy.

I am using Firefox since the beginning. I was always a Netscape Navigator user and than of the browser/fork version, that were opensourced.

It had a red dinosaur icon. :)
