Increase performance bar at the intellipoint menu. In fact.. set it to the max, it will give you very smooth performance..

That's exactly where I'm seeing the problem. It seems to be an issue with my Rev. B G5, because my Core Duo MacBook Pro does not exhibit the same issue. In any event, we've posted our review of the Wireless Laser Mouse 8000 here, complete with a version of the step-by-step instructions posted earlier.

I'm considering buying this mouse (notebook version) to go with a new MBP which will arrive here soon. Those of you using it, are you happy with it now, or do you suggest me to get a wireless MightMouse or any other BT mouse instead? Having read most of the above, i'm aware of that i will not get full functionallity (but almost).

Secondly, is there any reason to download (and buy) SteerMouse, or does the IntelliPoint 6.21 (latest version) do the job as well?

At the moment, I think that your best bet is the Logitech MX Revolution. We're in the process of revising that review of the WLM8000 based on some additional testing. After much scrutiny, we found that the mouse always performs great in Windows under Boot Camp with no driver installation required, but in Mac OS X our two mice performed differently on nearly every machine we tested them on (Rev. B G5, Core Duo iMac 20", MacBook Pro Core Duo 2.16, MacBook Pro 2.4 GHz [Santa Rosa]).

Essentially, if you can buy the WLM8000 from a place that has a very lenient return policy (ie, Costco), give it a shot on your Mac and see what happens. Otherwise, steer clear.

For users of the mouse - what kind of battery life are you getting on the "maximum performance" setting?

I'm trying to choose between this and the Logitech V270.

Thanks.

Well, I haven't done any formal testing, but I typically use my WLM8000 for well over 6-8 hours before bothering to recharge it. It uses a single NiMH battery, so you can easily grab a couple of them at a local grocery store and never have to worry about running out of power--ever. ;)

Well.. it lasts me 2-3 weeks with ~5-6 hour use per day. Pretty good I'd say!
(oh and I have maxed up the performance in preferences, it uses more battery that way)

Hi all,

All your instructions and insight have been a great help and the mouse works almost perfectly on my Mac. Only thing, I would like the pointer tracking speed to be faster, but I'm already at the max. Both when using OSX tracking and the Intellipoint pointer speed.

Is there anyway to change this?

Thanks

I just purchased this mouse and it works great with the internal bluetooth on my Powerbook G4 (no strange hack needed).

I simply installed Intellipoint 6.2, then on the powerbook I went to 'Set up a bluetooth device'. As it was searching for a device, I held down the bluetooth button on the bottom of the mouse. It connected fine and it recognizes it as a 'Microsoft Wireless Laser Mouse 8000'. All of the Intellipoint settings seem to work fine. I'm getting a new MacBook Pro in the next couple of days, so I hope that it works just as well with that laptop.

EDIT: Works great on the new MBP by setting up as described previously in my post.

I got this to replace the Logitech MX500. In fact I have been through 2 MX500 mice through the years. Aside from the fact that the MX500 was falling apart, one of the reasons I got a BT mouse was because I have so many USB things hanging off my MacBook Pro USB port (I reserve the other USB port for flash disks, unfortunately), that sometimes the MX500 would jitter and stop registering clicks. :(

This mouse was cheaper than the MX Revolution.

It's good. I didn't need to install Intellipoint 6.2.1 for my MacBook Pro Rev A to sync it. Built in BT, not dongle (unused). I was hoping to not have to install Intellipoint, and just use the extra buttons for Expose. I didn't need Logitech software for the MX500.

Unfortunately without Intellipoint, the mouse pointer acceleration is off. It doesn't "slow down" during fine movements. Or moves too slowly in large movements. Or isn't responsive, then overcompensates milliseconds later. It's not unusable -- just highly irritating in small amounts.

So, Intellipoint. It's just like Microsoft, to have a "performance slider" for a mouse. I mean, WTF ridiculous. I have mine to "performance +" as opposed to "battery +".

To be fair though, Intellipoint does allow customisation of the buttons, by application. Which is a "payware" feature of USB overdrive (and maybe Steermouse). However, I already use the extra buttons for "expose", "expose application", and "expose desktop"... So, unfortunately I don't benefit from that.

I actually like the charging dock, compared to the Logitech MX500. Having the mouse horizontal looks neater. Also the connection is so far more secure, although that was partly because the MX500 was many years old (got it when they were first released).

To be honest, the only thing I've noticed about the "laser" is that there isn't a red light under the mouse.

Pros:
works.
symmetrical.
sidescrolling.

Other cons:
Takes several seconds to wake from sleep (i have set my computer to not wake up to Bluetooth commands because I found that contributed to the computer waking up in my bag). This delay is exactly the same as the one affecting my Apple wireless keyboard.
A bit light. Feels hollow.
Extra buttons are in the wrong place, IMHO. I suppose they are "out of the way".
Middle button is hard to push down.

I have a problem with spending heaps of $ on a mouse, which made this a major purchase for me. I just couldn't get myself to get the MX Revolution, which I thought was more overpriced that this one.

Btw, this is not my travel mouse. I have a Logitech V270 that lives in my computer bag for that.

Some one will probably look for solution:

I've managed to pair Microsoft Wireless Laser Mouse 8000 with Leopard.

Heres what i did:

1. First I installed MS Drivers and tried to pair it normally but it didn't work (the old solution also did not work). Then i tried to cancel pair process in the middle - mouse then appeared for few seconds in Bluetooth PrefPane

2. Then i edited com.apple.Bluetooth.plist in /Library/Preferences adding new string into hid devices containing mac address of my mouse (you will have to change permissions to be able to edit this file - fortunately its easy in leopard)

3. I connected Microsoft dongle to MacBook and paired mouse with it - after restart the mouse was present in Bluetooth PrefPane and Bluetooth Menu. I've disconnected MS Dongle and pressed sync button on the mouse then in Bluetooth PrefPane i connected the device (the small gear icon).

And now it works :D

Probably only the last step is required for it to work - can someone confirm this?

PS. Sorry for my english.

I just bought this mouse and it seemed to install and work fine in Leopard with no problems.

However, the tracking speed is very fast. I have it on the slowest setting and its not so fast to be unbareable, but its pretty fast. I have tried both the driver-specific setting as well as the system setting.

Also, I cannot get the side buttons to work. I see no options in the mouse settings for them. Side scroll does work, but its like one character at a time - very slow.

Did these things work in Tiger?

Did you install IntelliPoint software ? (M$ drivers).
There you can map side buttons and change horizontal scrolling speed.

Wow. Leopard must have fixed something quite resoundingly, because I just bought a Presenter 8000 model, and had absolutely NONE of the above problems getting it running with the built-in bluetooth on my MBP C2D.

I simply paired it like any other mouse, and all worked fine. To get the additional functionality of the extra buttons and presentation controls, I installed IntelliPoint 6.2.1, and again --- no problems whatsoever. This thing is great.

My only issue (and the reason I ended up here after searching) is that I'd like to have the additional ability to reprogram the tilt wheel to give me two more programmable functions. I'd rather have more programmable functions than side scrolling, which I'm not using much at all so far.

I assume trying SteerMouse or USB Overdrive might help me here, or is there a simpler solution? IntelliPoint is otherwise working fantastically, so I'd like to do as little as possible.

Tiger users - 10.4.11 apparently is supposed to fix the issues with the Microsoft Presenter Mouse 8000 and built-in bluetooth.

It doesn't with the laser 8000. I got it connected thanx to viper, but i have the problem, that everytime i restart or sometimes after standby i have to repeat the whole thing with pairing and co. Anyone can help?

for some reason intellipoint stopped working for me when I upgraded, but steermouse works very well. side buttons work well and can adjust scroll/speed.

Presenter mouse 800 slow tracking speed

I'm using a Microsoft Presenter 8000 Bluetooth mouse on my Macbook Pro. I use the Microsoft Intellimouse software so I can map my side buttons and because I can't stand OS X's mouse acceleration with an actual mouse. I have the mouse tracking speed maxed out but the tracking or pointer speed is too slow for me. I upgraded the intellipoint software to mac version 6.2.2 (released on december 12th, 2007). The device is detected and "connected" but not shown as paired at the bluetooth hardware preferences menu. When the dongle is inserted in a USB port, it doesn't make a difference.

I also noted something strange: when the mouse is all set up and "working", I go straight to the keyboard and mouse hardware preferences menu and modify the tracking speed to about the fourth of fifth line and it works just fine! However when I close this menu and go back to work with any other application, the tracking speed returns to its sluggish movement.

I tried connecting a friend's Microsoft bluetooth notebook mouse 5000, and the bluetooth preferences menu shows it as both paired and connected - and the tracking speed works fine for me. But I bought this expensive 8000 presenter model only to find myself disappointed.

I wonder if this is related to the "connected but not paired" issue? How can this be resolved?

Is your presenter 8000 both connected and paired?

just to say that i had trouble getting the mouse to work initially in leopard, the trick was to use the bluetooth setup assistant, but instead of selecting mouse from the first menu select any device, then select the mouse from the list and click passkey options and select 'do not use a passkey with this device'. It then pairs and connects fine, no extra drivers required and the side scroll and extra buttons all work fine, although it doesn't show the battery life in the preferences pain, but that's a minor niggle.

Was that the Wireless Presenter 8000, or the full-size Wireless Laser 8000? There's been a lot of interchanging of those two models in this thread. I want the Wireless Laser 8000, but I can't find 100% confirmation that it works fine now with Leopard.

Mine works OK in Leopard with the built in BT on my MBP, but the movement is feels wrong. The cursor is a bit choppy unless I used the MS drivers and set it for high performance. However with the MS drivers, the cursor moves to slow. even at the fastest setting it's much too slow.

mrogers, i second everything err404 said. i have the full size wireless laser 8000 and it works 100% in leopard with my macbook's built in bluetooth. however, as err404 mentioned, the acceleration is horrible with the included drivers. even on max it's way too slow. the good news is that the 8000 works perfectly with both usboverdrive and steermouse. either of these apps make this a great mouse on the mac. the bad news is that this of course adds $20 to the price of the mouse. well worth it to me though.

I have never used either usboverdrive or steermouse. Would you recommend one over the other for use with the 8000?

they are really about the same for basic functionality. steermouse IMO has a better interface and a few more tweaking options. usboverdrive added bluetooth support back in october and said a totally rewritten version was coming "soon". well, since then, i have emailed the developer about this new version as well as questions about the current version. i have yet to receive a single reply. the steermouse guys on the other hand, usually had an answer for me by the next day. so, i felt better giving my $20 to steermouse. they also just released a new version so i know it's actively being worked on.

my advice though is to try them both out. they both have a trial period so i say give them both a thorough workout and see which one you like best. i just wanted to make you aware of the possible support issues with usboverdrive.

I'm considering buying the Microsoft Wireless Laser Mouse 8000 for use with my iMac. I'm replacing a Logitech S530 mouse which has pretty much given up on me now.

Can anyone with this mouse confirm how it works with Leopard for syncing etc? I'm a little worried that it won't like being synced with Leopard and Boot Camp too.

Thanks.
