Can anyone with this mouse confirm how it works with Leopard for syncing etc? I'm a little worried that it won't like being synced with Leopard and Boot Camp too.

Well I bought one for use with my new MBP (Penryn 2.5Ghz). The first time (I had to replace the MBP due to a dodgy fan issue) it was a bit of a hassle to get it paired in Leopard but no problem with Windows under Boot Camp and whenever I changed OS it just reconnected as normal without a problem.

Second time I actually set it up in Windows first and since it's using the same BT transceiver it appeared to save the pairing on the Mouse so when I then rebooted into OS X it was paired and worked without requiring any setup!

It's worth installing the MS Intellipoint drivers to get full use of all the buttons, but so far I'm really happy with it.

I bought the Microsoft 5000 BT mouse, and tried to install Intellipoint 6.22under Leopard.... and NOTHING happens?!

The instruction sheet is next to worthless... No CD came with it...

Where/What does this program do? Is it supposed to modify the Mouse Preferences Screen? Is it "behind-the-scenes"?

I want/need to reconfig the buttons.... especially the scroll wheel... I don't need Dashboard to pop up everytime I put a bit of pressure on the scroll wheel.

Otherwise this sucker is going back to Best-Buy.

if it successfully installed, it will be in system preferences under "other". the icon is a grey arrow and it's called "microsoft mouse" i believe. i used it with my wireless laser 8000 but have since uninstalled it because the acceleration was too slow even on max. i now use my microsoft mouse with steermouse instead which works great.

I use steermouse too, it's great. Didn't even try the MS software, their mouse software for Windows was always awful so didn't hold much hope on a mac!

Some one will probably look for solution:

I've managed to pair Microsoft Wireless Laser Mouse 8000 with Leopard.

Heres what i did:

1. First I installed MS Drivers and tried to pair it normally but it didn't work (the old solution also did not work). Then i tried to cancel pair process in the middle - mouse then appeared for few seconds in Bluetooth PrefPane

2. Then i edited com.apple.Bluetooth.plist in /Library/Preferences adding new string into hid devices containing mac address of my mouse (you will have to change permissions to be able to edit this file - fortunately its easy in leopard)

3. I connected Microsoft dongle to MacBook and paired mouse with it - after restart the mouse was present in Bluetooth PrefPane and Bluetooth Menu. I've disconnected MS Dongle and pressed sync button on the mouse then in Bluetooth PrefPane i connected the device (the small gear icon).

And now it works :D

Probably only the last step is required for it to work - can someone confirm this?

PS. Sorry for my english.

There's a much easier way to sync your Microsoft Wireless Laser Mouse 8000 with your Mac using Leopard.

1. Open Bluetooth Setup Assistant (Click continue)
2. Select "Any Device"
3. Click on "Passkey Options" and
4. Select "Do not use a passkey with this device"
5. Click "Continue"
6. Click "Continue"
7. Click "Quit"

And your done....

I got one of these mice last week and was able to pair it with Leopard. I used the method described here to pair it but your method seems a lot easier and works too.

I've had two problems with my mouse. the first is that my iMac kept on waking up on its own once I'd paired the mouse. I sorted this out by switching off the option to allow Bluetooth devices to wake up the computer.

The only problem I've been unable to fix is that it takes at least 30 seconds for the mouse to connect to the iMac when I wake it up. It's rally annoying for the computer to not wake up instantly like I've been used to. Does anyone know if there's way to improve the situation?

Current status of usability?

Can anyone tell me the current status of using this mouse (on an MBP running Leopard)?

It seems like every so often one or two of the problems with using this item on a Mac get addressed for *some* of the users…but never all of them (problems or users :)). I'm interested in it because I would like a laser notebook mouse with two side buttons along with two buttons on top and a scroll wheel…I know some people recommend the Logitech VX Revolution but I prefer the side buttons to be on opposite sides rather than next to each other. (I don't care about the laser pointer presenter or whatever it's called.)

So is it plug-n-play yet for those features, at sane levels of sensitivity/speed, with the bundled software, or are people still using tweaks like SteerMouse to get things functioning?

Setting up Microsoft Wireless Laser 8000 with Mac

The mouse works fine with my MBP with Leopard. It should work with any Mac with BT. Just follow the steps below:

1. Download and install Microsoft Intellimouse 6.2.2. To download this driver from Microsoft website, you need to select Wireless 5000 Laser or 6000 to access the latest Intellimouse (6.2.2 for mac) software because MS no longer supports 8000 on Mac for some odd reason.

2. Turn on the mouse and bluetooth switch in Leopard, and Click on "Set up bluetooth device..." in Bluetooth status icon in the menu or in the preference. And then follow the wizard. Press and hold the reset button on the back surface of 8000 mouse when it's looking for a bluetooth mouse. Use no pass key option.

3. There is a glitch when the mouse pairs with Mac (no big deal but...). When it's paired, "Connection Lost" is shown but the bluetooth status at the menu bar shows that the mouse has been paired and the mouse should be working at this time.

4. All the preferences for the mouse are in Microsoft Mouse under Other in System Preferences. You can assign all the functions, like dashboard (via built-in intellimouse feature) and spaces (via F8 shortcut key). The Intellimouse 6.2.2 recognizes the 8000 mouse flawlessly.

TIP: If you find the pointer choppy or jumpy, click on Performance Tab, select "Turn on the performance slider" and then slide the glider all the way to the right, "Performance +". The mouse does last for weeks for mild usage even though you select "Performance".

IMO: Wireless 8000 Mouse > Wireless Mighty Mouse in terms of functionality (5 buttons with scroll all customizable), ergonomics (comfortable with my large hand), and cosmetics (aluminum look just like MBP or any other aluminum Mac). Enjoy!

Hi altogether,

I also bought the Wireless Laser Mouse 8000, because I thought it is working properly in OS X Leopard when using the tricks mentioned before.
First I paired the mouse according to the guide mentioned here - no problem. the mouse works.

But I have the following problems:

- Extra buttons do not work
- Mouse cursor is very laggy, "jumps" very wide every few seconds

I tried it with intellipoint software (set performance to maximum), steermouse, usboverdrive, I had always the same problem! I also tried the mouse in Win XP - here no problem, it works perfectly!

I hope someone can help - I really like this mouse, but it is not possible to use it with this performance.

P.S.: Sorry for my bad english

I recently tried to use the MS Laser Mouse 8000 mouse with my iMac to replace the awful Mighty Mouse (do people who work at Apple actually use the MM?)

Anyway I wanted to use this mouse because for one thing it was a regular sized bluetooth mouse. Most bluetooth mice are minis so I thought this would be a good replacement. When I was researching this mouse I did notice the specs said Windows only but many users on this and other forums said it would work with or without the included bluetooth receiver for OS X.

Connecting this mouse wasn't to difficult but performance was terrible. I did install the latest IntelliPoint software tweaked all of the settings but the jerky movements and slow scrolling was to annoying. I even tried a different mouse pad and tried with a just piece of paper (my desk has a glass top) but performance didn't improve and ultimately I just removed this mouse from my iMac. I did think about returning the mouse but I just took it to the office and under Windows XP this mouse works flawlessly.

Now I just use a spare standard MS 3000 optical mouse and even though I had to eat a USB port on the back of my computer, this mouse works well in 10.5 and the color at least compliments my aluminum iMac.

How Do I Map Scroll Wheel Click to Spaces ( F8 )?

PacMookBro wrote "and spaces (via F8 shortcut key)."

Since the MS Intellipoint 6.2.2 software does not list either Spaces or shortcut keys as available mapping options, how do you do that?

(I've tried telling Intellipoint to let the Mac OS handle the scroll wheel click event, and then adding Steermouse to make the assignment, but that isn't working either)

I have the scroll button set to activate Spaces, and the side buttons set to activate Dashboard and Expose - Desktop. The second two of those, as you probably figured out, you can set up in the Microsoft Mouse System Preferences pane (I'm also using Intellipoint 6.2.2). To get Spaces to work, I set "Wheel button" in that Microsoft Mouse pane to "Handled by Mac OS" and then in the "Expose & Spaces" pane set "To activate Spaces" to F8 and "Mouse Button 3." It works for me and without Steermouse. Sounds very much like what you did, though...

Hope that helps, anyway...

Thanks for explaining so explicitly absurdio - I simply didn't realize I could pick multiple buttons in System Preferences -> "Expose & Spaces", and I wanted to leave F8 for use when I don't have the Bluetooth keyboard.

A warning - perhaps it's because I've never used the scroll wheel as a button before, but its only working intermittently. It seems to be breaking in with use, but is still a bit flaky - sometimes requiring 3 or 4 clicks. The reliability of the "click" may vary with the wheel position...

Thanks for pointing that out, absurdio. That's exactly what I did to make Spaces work. ;)

Yeah. I'll echo that sentiment. It does sometimes take 2-3 clicks of the wheel button for spaces to activate. On the other hand, sometimes it responds with just one. Guess if we wanted it to work perfectly, we wouldn't have bought a microsoft mouse. ;)

I just ordered the MS Bluetooth Notebook Mouse 500. My mom has the same mouse and I notice sometimes random jumping and sluggish at times. Is this a problem only on some mice, or is it fixed by some driver?

Jumping , sluggish, etc.

I've been using this with a MacBook Pro & 10.5 for about 6 months. Size and feel is great. I like the on-/off switch as well, which my old Belkin BT mouse needed desperately, being a huge battery hog (<= 1 week/pair). Battery life on the BT5000 is quite good - I probably get at least 2 months of heavy use on a single pair of rechargeables.

First of all, you DO NOT need to install any MS software or drivers. I didn't. It works out-of-the-box with both MacOS and Parallels/WinXP. Try it first, before you load up your computer with any more MS crap. Only nitpick there is that you don't get the battery-level display in System Preferences. Big deal.

Second, yes - it does get jumpy and sluggish sometimes. Sluggishness seems to be always associated with Parallels getting constipated. Jumpiness comes and goes, but a quick puff of air into the optical port seems to clear that up every time (blow in its ear, and it will follow you anywhere).

Only real problem is that it tends to get lost every now and then. It does NOT become 'unpaired' - it just seems to have problems reconnecting to the Mac. Sometimes, cycling power on the mouse will fix it. more often, I have to turn bluetooth off and back on in the Mac's Bluetooth control panel. It also helps to be patient - the mouse will go to sleep after it's been idle for a while, and sometimes it takes a little longer to reconnect than you think it should. Give it a little time, and it will usually come back. If not, then it's time to toggle Bluetooth on and off in the control panel.

Most of this sort of thing comes with the territory in Bluetooth. I suspect the Mighty Mouse has connection problems every now and then, as well. I went with this one over the Mighty Mouse because I preferred the size and shape, and because I'm just kind of old-fashioned about discrete buttons and a real wheel.

I just got the mouse also. I can use the mouse but for some reason its movement is very slow even when I put the pointer speed to highest. Any ways to make the pointer move faster?

Gigadigit - Do you have any other bluetooth devices attached. A bluetooth headset, in particular, will crush all other bluetooth performance. I tried using one of my BT phone headsets with iChat AV, and the mouse became almost unusable until I turned the headset off and unpaired it. This is a known issue, acknowledged by Apple.

Sometimes, applications can somehow suck the performance down. If you're running out of free memory (as shown by the green pie wedge in Activity Monitor), some apps like Safari seem to cause mouse slowdowns, even if Activity Monitor shows the CPU mostly idle. In this case, simply moving some other app to the front seems to clear up the problem for me. But, I'm guessing you wouldn't be asking if your problem was this simple.

I tried another mouse. Logitech v470. This one is a lot worst. With this one, I can get it to go a lot faster, but it lags so the movement is not instantaneous. It's not smooth and accurate. Don't know what the deal is.

At least with the MS presenter 8000, the movements are smooth. My only issue with this mouse is I wish it would go faster on leopard. This mouse on the vista side running bootcamp is perfect.

I also have the BT500. This one tracks very well and movements are smooth, but it's too small for my hand.

Hello, slumbering thread.

Can anyone offer Snow Leopard specific instructions on getting the mouse to pair properly? I've had this mouse working for so long that I don't recall how it got working in the first place. I know the mouse HAS worked with Snow Leopard; it was for me. But now, for the life of me, I can't get the mouse and computer to pair.

The Leopard-era instructions don't seem applicable anymore.

Help?

Bluetooth->SetUpBluetoothDevice
Put mouse in pairing mode (press+hold button on bottom)
Wait for it to show up in the Bluetooth Setup Assistant window
Select it and hit Continue.

I don't remember if I went to Microsoft.com to download anything

Note: the presenter controls only seem to work if Powerpoint is open and running; otherwise they control iTunes. Not so cool if you're trying to do a Google Docs presentation. :)

Okay. I've found a solution. It's a colossal pain in the ass, but it works.
Again, was only necessary because the existing "fixes" wouldn't work for me.
Here:

1. Sign up as a developer
2. Download and install ~10GB worth of Developer Tools, just for the sake of the "Bluetooth Explorer" tool.
3. In Bluetooth Explorer, click the Device menu and then Show Device Discovery. Select the mouse and hit Get Device Info.
4. Put the mouse in discovery mode.
5. Click "Connected" and/or "Favorite," then wiggle the mouse around.
6. Uninstall all that crap.

I'm deeply indebted to Charles117, whose post I've essentially plagiarized here.

So, my Wireless Laser Mouse 8000 is working happily, again.
This was more cumbersome a fix than I would have liked, but it was the only one that worked for me. And, cumbersome though it was, it wasn't difficult. If you're having trouble getting this mouse to pair with Snow Leopard, this may be the answer for you.

help here

Hi guys,

I bought a MS Wireless Laser 8000 Bluetooth mouse today to use with my iMac. I tried to use the "bluetooth setup assistant" to pair it, but it doesn't work. Has anyone else tried using this mouse with your Mac?

PS: I have a bluetooth logitech headset which works perfectly with my iMac,so my bluetooth unit is definately working.

Thanks
You need to download software for the mouse from microsoft...my mouse worked fine at first but stopped working after a few days..so I downloaded the software download and now it works great..if you can't find it let me know and I will send it to you
