Apple Test Marketing

I always wonder if Apple is performing market research by planting outlandish rumors like this and seeing what feedback they get.

I am typing this on a mini right now. The only way I could see the mini getting smaller is if it was included in the keyboard. Think about it, half the keyboard would be the optical drive and the other half would be processor. They could use the mag connector on the power, and the video output port of a MB Air. It would practically be a MBA, which is the same concept the original mini used with the MB.

In summary, keyboards are about 5" from front to back, and so is an optical drive.

Hey, Apple reinvents the Commodore 64!

Yeah, I dont think so. Thats a lot of thickness, heat and messy cables coming from your keyboard.

Why all the anti-xMac sarcasm? Who says an Apple-branded tower would liken itself to a typical PC tower? I happen to recall back in 2000, Apple innovated on the tower and created the Cube. It had an upgradable dedicated GPU, HDD, optical drive, RAM, and was so freaking easy to open up. And it was a masterpiece on the outside. Truly a piece of art.

Unfortunately, Apple decided to innovate again, but instead of innovating on the tower, they innovated on the Cube and ended up with the Mini, which is doggone small, but has lost the essence of a tower. That has its advantages, but also its disadvantages. We xMac-ers long for a computer with the essence of the Cube: a perfect harmony of beauty on the outside, yet power and expandability on the inside.

C'mon, Apple: innovate on the tower, and make your long-faithful prosumers happy once again. Free me from this Apple dystopia!!!

Beauty and power? Mac Pro! Oh, it's too expensive?! But so was the Cube :)

Innovation to one is unwanted tradeoffs to another. Despite what job wants everyone to believe, one size does not fit all.

word, that's why the current apple strategy with making the mac pro more outlandish in specs and price and making the mini so bad in value that they either upsell from the mini to the imac or either downsell from the mac pro to the imac is so ridiculous

steve jobs: get over it ... some people will never buy an AIO no matter how bad you make the other desktop lineup

i would rather buy a windows computer than a fricking imac

If Apple put a Blu-ray drive in a Mac mini I would buy one in a flash. Perfect to hook up to a big screen LCD TV. :)

That would be similar to the AMIGA 500/1200. :D They should do this IMO.

I wouldn't go that far, but I will say that while the iMac is perfectly capable of matching any family machine you'll find on Best Buy's shelves it is a very poor replacement for someone who had been using a Power Mac or an mid to upper end PC. I would know because I gave in and bought one.

true the imac for sure is enough for my mother or sister

but for own personal computer it's simply not enough .. and after using a mini for 3 years i know that a future mini won't cut it for myself .. it has been great for carrying it back and forth but for my next computer i want to replace the current 2 computers with a single one and the only place for upgrading for the mini is either an imac or a obscene mac pro

personally i think they should do away with model frenzy (i mac spanning from 1200 to 2400 bucks ? no sense for me there)

why do they have 2 mac minis in the first place ? make it one cheap model and introduce something above with expandability
and beef up the imac and make it the luxurious computer it already is anyway

also that would help them the lack of 3rd party hardware for their mac pros at well (not being able to use the gt8800 in the last years model ... so much for being expandable)

less confusing, barley different models but more different form factors instead that's what apple should be about

A lot of good ideas in here. Takao, I hadn't thought about that: offer one less Mini and one less iMac and there you have it - plenty of room for the mid-range tower. Hell, I'd take it in beige if it were functional!

I really dont think it needs to be smaller, just make them faster!! A cheap small mac is good.
I second that. I have a 20" display and a mouse already, plus scanner and printer and everything. All I need is a desktop computer. The Mac mini is perfect for me, so bring on the speed bump.

Love the Mini

I love the mini, with it's form factor left alone. A faster machine with a better graphics card can be a good thing.

I have patients staying after surgery. All rooms are equipped with mini's. The patients love it. Every mini has TV reciever so the patients can surf the web, look at tv och msn och ichat with their friends. The mini is a great machine as is.

At home I use a mini as a mediacenter connected to my tv. Works great. Love it. Don't change anything but the speed and graphics capabilities.

Vote for MacMini as the next President, as is it's a lot faster and smarter than Bush.
:)

My goodness has any topic other than the mac mini generated so much discussion? every time a new thread is generated the posts sprout like weeds

the next mini has to be directed more to switchers
right now..its not imo, its just to expensive not coming with a screen keyboard or mouse u can get an HP quad core for the same price with screen and the suit it makes me laugh
i know its quality but WTF, macs OS obviously isnt as hacker safe as we all thought is it now apple.... u played me... u said it was rock solid. better than vista. apparently its not.

MY 2 CENTS.

They never did say it was unhackable. Just virus safe. But hey, if they wanna lower the prices, I'm not gonna say no.

Yes, it was too expensive, but it also had the disadvantage of being released right after the dot.com crash. People weren't very enthusiastic about technology in mid 2000.

If one were to recreate the Cube today it would not cost nearly as much, even with modern CPU and GPU. Apple could very likely release a profitable cube for $900. Think about it: take a "high-end" MacMini @ $800, give it a worthwhile GPU, a cheaper and more spacious 2.5" HDD, cheaper but more powerful full-size RAM, and mark the price up a hundred bucks. Throw it in a pretty case and shove it out the door.

Personally, I'd prefer an extra HDD slot and some extra RAM slots, but I'd settle for the above Cube 2.0.

Still catching up on threads..

Re: different form factor mini.. A few months ago there was a weird Leopard-related rumor that there would be a "boot into front row" option. I wonder whether the new mini will be more of an "almost apple tv" crossover device that could "boot into front row" (maybe as simple as just launching it after a reboot).

Seems there is often some shred of truth in rumors that come out - this could be a product-specific rumor that got applied to the whole OS..

i doubt it, it would be too close to the :apple:TV, people might choose to buy the mini if its cheap enough, if u get what i mean.

I dont wanna sound like an idiot, but is the mini even worth the money? I mean, I would definitely rather save up and buy a MB or an iMac for less than twice the money. I'm just curious, because what if the reason they haven't updated it in so long is because not many people have bought it? I may be an idiot, so if I'm totally off base please set me straight
