I dont wanna sound like an idiot, but is the mini even worth the money? I mean, I would definitely rather save up and buy a MB or an iMac for less than twice the money. I'm just curious, because what if the reason they haven't updated it in so long is because not many people have bought it? I may be an idiot, so if I'm totally off base please set me straight

oh its worth it. it allows you to save on desk space when there is limited amounts, it serves as a great media centre/fileserver/webserver/everything else and its great as a machine tht can do odd little jobs, such as downloads/store iphoto libraries etc. u get the picture

some of us like choice, secondly some of us use the mini with a huge plasma/lcd TV and some of us just think the screens in the imacs suck donkey balls

Thank you both. I guess it just doesn't fit my needs/wants, but I can definitely see why people would buy it much more clearly than I could before.

why do they have 2 mac minis in the first place ? make it one cheap model and introduce something above with expandability
and beef up the imac and make it the luxurious computer it already is anyway...less confusing, barley different models but more different form factors instead that's what apple should be about

Yeah, Apple should offer even fewer models. Maybe only one. Make it easier to choose.

store is down.... wuhuuuuu!!:D

Final Cut Server...... wuhuuu???

Very disapointing, was hoping for a new Mac Mini

Me too. I've been saving up for a MacMini for several months now. I was holding out for the x3100... but by the time the Mini gets it, it'll already be archaic. It wasn't new 8 months ago when Apple neglected to put it in the Mini, and it's not getting any younger. Even a weak discrete GPU pwns the x3100 nowadays.

C'mon Apple, just spring for a little graphics bling. It'll go a long way and won't be that hard on the bottom line.

And what's with the insane wait times these last two cycles?? 8 months and 6 months (and counting)? That's plain ridiculous. 8 months is an eternity in computing. I've been trying to remain civil, but honestly. Get off your ass. Stop ripping off your customers with second-rate hardware.

Agreed! The switch to Intel initially promised quicker upgrade cycles, but in reality Apple's waiting times only get longer. No reputable PC manufacturer behaves like this, so why do Apple? Oh, of course, OS X! If you want OS X, you must accept the Apple way or go the Hackintosh way, & the latter kind of defeats one of the main reasons for having OS X in the 1st place.

Apple have us by the balls &, short of buying a PC, there's really nothing we can do about it.

@gregorsamsa

I'll tell ya, I am inches away from building myself a Hackintosh right now. $600 will go a LOT further in hardware from NewEgg than Apple's premium-priced hardware (which in many cases is identical). The only sucky part is maintaining the OS updates. Worth it?

Depends what you want to do with it. If you plan on using any pro apps, forget it. Every app update broke Logic on my old Hackintosh - that's why I switched to my current G5 in the first place.

I now couldn't imagine chancing it with my DAW and a hacked OS... On the flip side it was bloody fast though :(

Frankly, it wouldn't be worth it for me at this time as I need computers that run smoothly & won't eat up my time with maintenance issues, regardless of all the support out there via Hackintosh fora. But later on, possibly.

One thing I am sure about is that if Apple delays these updates much longer, I'm buying a PC & then an updated Mini won't be an instant purchase on release but will have to be postponed until at least summer. Apple won't care of course, but I probably will, particularly when I encounter the first of many impediments with Vista driver issues, etc. :(

Upgrade Strategy: If you put the money for a mini into a savings account when the "new mini" rumors first appeared, by the time it comes out you'll be able to buy a Mac Pro.

cube

I saw a Mac cube over at a friend's house recently, and I was surprised at how big they are! It's amazing how just a few years can change your expectations. I recall that when the cube came out, it seemed so small.

I think a liquid-cooled Mini would be the absolute bomb, but they're so hard to engineer. Maybe if the "new" Mini is smaller, I'll rip it apart, liquid-cool it, overclock it, and stuff it into a dead cube case.

That's what I will do too.

Sorry but the current mac minis are just not up to date and I don't need a 8 core system and I also don't need a notebook or a system with an integrated monitor because I have a great one alreday.

If there is no update in the next 2 weeks, I buy a pc system what I can also upgrade whenever I want.

Wow, thanks for the input. I would be using it primarily for Logic, Garage Band, Finale, and occasional polygon-intense gaming (in Windows). I'd just like to NOT have to have two machines around. I'd definitely be dual-booting one way or the other... but I know the MacMini's GPU won't be able to handle what I want it to... so I guess I'll have to keep two machines around, dammit.

Would a high end iMac work instead? 2.8 core extreme, or even wait till the update comes out? I mean, if the mini doesn't work, and you only want 1 machine around, why not?

Uh-oh. Now you've done it...

My wife is in school, I'm new in the workforce, and I don't have to remind anyone how the economy is doing... so in short, money is not abundant. It's taken many months to save up enough for a even MacMini. So am I going to pay $2250 for a setup that I can blow out of the water with a home-built system for $800? I think not. The price of the iMac is extortion. Plus, I already have a display that will serve me well enough for a few more years at least. I don't mean to sound like a jackass but it's the truth.

Secondly, I know I'll grow out of an iMac very quickly. I got an iMac for college and grew out of it in a year. I know it's unreasonable to expect a computer to maintain its modernity for 6 years, but that's my upgrade cycle at the moment and that's all I'm capable of at this point in my life. My newest Mac is an 800MHz G4 iMac, of which I've upgraded just about every component inside... (for much cheaper than the cost of a new computer, by the way) but still I'm forced to run Logic 5 (emagic) and an early edition of Garage Band... and it still freezes when I try to play back multiple unlocked software tracks.

I need this from Apple: a DESKTOP CLASS (not mobile, not server) mo-board/chipset/CPU, two 3.5" HDD bays, an optical bay, four regular SDRAM slots (not SO-DIMMS), a couple PCI/e slots, OS X, and iLife. Populate those bays/slots however you want, Apple. Just don't waste MY precious money on miniturization, mobile parts, or unneeded visual frills.

There are as many computing needs as there are users. While the Mini, iMac and Pro are a good fit for many, only a system like the one described above will be the shoe that everyone - even computing misfits like me - can fit into.

Uh-oh. Now you've done it...

that makes a lot of sense to me. I hope they update the mini for you! My only issue is it is currently underpowered, by far, and if it they update it as you say, it would be a much more feasible for many people.

Apple really needs a normal desktop in it's lineup, the all in one imac does not work for a lot of people due the fact that when you have to replace the imac you also have to replace the monitor, which has one of the worst LCD screens I've seen. (backlight bleed in the corners & just plain poor quality picture) .

Mac mini is a joke with it's current hardware, there is no need for it to be as small as it is, nothing justifies using laptop hardware for a desktop computer.
Also I should be able to open the thing up without a paint scraper to replace the ram & hard drive if needed...

Many potential switchers as myself want a desktop with a desktop processor, hard drive & ram, pci slot with a extra sata slot for a secondary hard drive.
A extra sata port should allow two hard drives so on one I can boot to osx & the other boot to windows without a two partitions on one drive.

& the mac pro is just way too much money & a waste of money due to the fact I don't need that much power...

Just my thoughts...

why cant we just have the MMMM that we all want instead...
