well no offense or anything, but if you like the PC's so much why dont you buy them instead of macs??? the slim case isnt the ONLY advantage of the imacs.... personally (i.e. TO ME!) i use apple computers because of the OS, and their simplicity in being able to work on so much without having to be bogged down by a crappy GUI.
i am fully aware that there are better pc's for far cheaper, but i dont care and im sure a lot of other users dont either. its more than just the costs. i literally hate xp (can use it fine but prefer os8 to it), and vista....ugh.
p.s. apple isnt going to give you the desktop CPU you want, nor the desktop GPU you want... thats just not how they operate im sorry to say (yes i wish there was a desktop model "tower" mac too).
Do you realize that both of your examples of what makes Macs superior were OS X related? This is what I've been saying all along. OS X and iLife, to me, are the only reason to buy a Mac. Apple knows this, so they take advantage of the consumer by forcing them to buy higher-priced (and, ergo, higher margin) hardware, even though it's less powerful than standard desktop components.
What I've been trying to show ISN'T that you can build a yourself a Mac-replacement for less money, but that APPLE could build a more-powerful Mac for less money.
And yes, I do take offense to, not just yours, but everyone's suggestion to "just use a PC" or "just use Windows." It's not that black and white. I
NEED OS X. I just vehemently refuse to be siphoned into one of three categories: Windows Switcher (Mac Mini), basic user (iMac), professional (Mac Pro). If I must be categorized, I am a prosumer... a notibly-sized market segment for which Apple offers
NO SOLUTIONS. The iMac is too weak and isn't expandable/upgradable, and a Mac Pro has too much power. There IS a middle ground.

who said it was H-IPS?? probably TFT, or CRT
Uhh... H-IPS is a type of TFT. Don't speak unless you know.
Besides, H-IPS has its drawbacks too... such as a narrower viewing angle than 1998's S-IPS. Regardless, I don't work with photos professionally, so I don't give a rat's ass.
Likewise:
not everybody needs H-IPS panels
and if you need a H-IPS panel you should be slapped anyway for buying an imac with it's laptop components to do such work
Well said, takao, well said.
One area where every MAC user can feel "ripped off" is the in-house price for upgradable RAM. It's about the same percentage of markup that I experience when I buy a bottle of water at the concession stand at the movie theatre. And I try to buy neither.
Exactly. It's no secret that Apple pads the price of its RAM. You can easily pay half the price for equal-quality, equal-capacity RAM and install it yourself... and RAM is one of the easiest things to install, period. Shame on Apple for charging so much.
What isn't as easy to see is that Apple posts similar mark-ups on other internals. Take a look at their internal HDD upgrades, for example. Plus, you know these guys get huge volume discounts, so they're making a killing.
Again, my point isn't that you can build a yourself a Mac-replacement for less money, but that APPLE could build a more-powerful Mac for less money.
