Apple is planning to refresh many of its accessories to add a USB-C port following the transition away from Lightning on the iPhone 15 lineup, Bloomberg's Mark Gurman told MacRumors.

On the most recent episode of The MacRumors Show podcast, Gurman said that Apple is seeking to move to USB-C across its lineup of accessories by next year, including all of its AirPods models and Mac accessories. The transition will apparently be relatively fast, mirroring the transition to the Lightning connector following its introduction in 2012.

"They're going to need to do a new MagSafe Duo with USB-C," Gurman said, and Apple "certainly can update the MagSafe battery pack" to add USB-C. It is not entirely clear if these refreshed accessories will be introduced at Apple's "Wonderlust" event on Tuesday, September 12.

Gurman also mused that the now-discontinued Apple Watch Magnetic Charging Dock could be reintroduced with a USB-C port. Although Apple needs to refresh a large selection of its cables and accessories relatively quickly, he is "not expecting any curveballs or any brand new types of accessories" to be announced at the iPhone 15 Apple event.

In addition, Gurman explained that a new MagSafe Battery Pack is in development, but it is likely not yet ready to be introduced. The next-generation battery pack involves a new concept that allows users to "daisy-chain" multiple battery packs together by stacking them and wirelessly charge multiple devices at the same time. For example, it will be possible to charge two iPhones at the same time, with one placed on either side of the battery pack. It will also, of course, feature a USB-C port.

Gurman said that he does not think the new AirPods Pro with a USB-C port on the charging case, due to be announced next week, will be marketed as "third-generation AirPods Pro." The third-generation AirPods Pro will be a more significant update launching next year or early 2025, Gurman claimed. Listen to The MacRumors Show podcast for Gurman's full thoughts and expectations.

Fake Wireless charging Is the dumbest feature to ever come to any tech device. I'd rather have a MacBook like magesafe magnet charger, but for iPhone they can reduce it even more in size. That is truly the future until true long distance wireless charging gets solved. No more ports. No battery destruction from fake wireless charging, no terrible inefficiency where you lose half your battery capacity for nothing. Hope Apple makes the investment. It will help them get their accessory monopoly back

Does anyone know which connector or cable I need to get if I want to use a classic 5W Apple Charger to charge the new iPhone 15 Pro Max?

Is it possible to charge the new iPhone 15 Pro Max with the classic 5W Apple Charger?

I don't know if it's possible, but if it is, you can purchase a USB-C to USB-A cable from Monoprice.com (they have different lengths and colors).

I doubt this will ever be released.

I dont care what it is, as long as its a nondescript flat rectangle with radiused corners I’ll buy it! I just look around and think, I do NOT have enough flat rectangles with radiused corners in my life. Thank you, tech bro’s, for working so diligently to resolve this important issue.
a couple years ago Apple Maps started displaying buildings as roundrects instead of just decrepit old rectangles. So technically, now any house you could buy is a roundrect too!

I always wondered why MagSafe accessories, particularly those of 3rd parties are all so dull. There is so much scope out there and yet all they’ve done is copy Apple with wallets and battery packs. These are useful and all but how about:

- A MagSafe wallet I can secure Yale keys in on a night out?
- A MagSafe thin asthma inhaler for the same use? Admittedly this would need some serious investment.
- a laser rangefinder for DIY jobs?
- a spirit level that I can just pull off when needed?
- a rear set of shoulder buttons for gaming?
- a pocket watch case for an Apple Watch giving you an external rear display?
- a magnetic ring flash or macro light?
- a Swiss Army EDC knife set into a rectangular shape?
- an emergency USB-C hub for other devices?
- A magnetic beer mat? I can’t be the only one who rests drinks on the back of my phone when it’s on the arm of the sofa
- A gimble like device that rotates 180 degrees to hold your phone with?
- a camera grip with a shutter button?
- an 8bitdo-style rectangular SNES controller you can just pull off and play with?
- a weather station packed with sensors to measure local humidity and temp accurately?
- a non-invasive blood glucose monitor?
- Just something simple to dock a Siri Remote to?

These are all off the top of my head and all would be useful to someone to have just in their pocket or bag, snapped onto their phone.
Have you considered a career in product design? Nomad and Belkin need your ideas.

If stackable means that you can put a MagSafe battery pack on MagSafe charger and charger will charge it then it will be something.
This seems more likely to me than charging an iPhone on both sides. Unless there’s an arrangement of magnets that would work with either direction and the coils could do bidirectional charging it would have to be one or the other.

Until all this USB-C gets settled and the transition gets completed. Let us use this corrector, please.

I was part of this Kickstarter back in the day. Now they are readily available at retail.

Rolling Square inCharge XL 6-in-1 Multi Charging Cable

I carry a couple of these in my bag so I can charge pretty much anything.

:p

Might also be a slightly messy workaround for the 2hr limit on Vision Pro batter. Attach the 'extra' pack magnetically ( to carry on same location ) , but also couple the USB-C ports ( to transfer power at higher speeds. ). [ I don't think the 'trickle' recharge power from Qi/induction is going to be enough to power the VR headset at normal loads. Might be able to 'backfill' a subset of the cells as they are being drained from the main pack to add some incremental time over 2hrs if just did it all wirelessly. Kind of an 'emergency extend' my 2 hour session/meeting by 15 mins kind of solution by simply reaching into a drawer and slapping on an extra pack (no plugging in)]

If can slap on a MagSafe pack for extra time , would make calling the Vision Pro main battery 'MagSafe' make more sense.

I have the MagSafe battery for my 14 Pro Max. I would need to stack 3 of them to charge my Max from 10% to 100%. Can the next generation MagSafe battery charge a Pro Max from 10% to 100%? 😐

Of course. Apple switched to USB-C because they want you to buy all the accessories once again.

It is an EU regulation law that they are complying with. It really wasn't an idea that Apple solely came up with. Apple doesn't have a choice here.

Not sure if you're joking, but it's clear Apple was heading towards usb-c all along. The EU decision lets them blame someone else when customers complain about the port change.

This is revisionist history. For Apple to be heading this way "all along" they would have needed to start making Lightning device transitions BEFORE the EU regulation ever got proposed. The transitions of the last couple of years has only happened AFTER the EU regulations passed. The regulations give a generously long lead-up date to where they became mandatory. Did Apple wrangle some changes to the lead-up date? Probably. But the start date for the regulation isn't the same as planning for this.

Apple's early 'commit' to USB-C was only in trying to retire USB-A as quickly as possible. It wasn't replacing Ligthining . It was mini-DP and USB-A that were the targets that Apple was keen to move off the board. ( almost entirely 'Mac" side. ). Apple helped create USB-C so they had influence in USB-C having properties they would prefer if it got mandated to be the choice. But Apple wasn't pushing that mandate to happen.

We'll see how many people will get fool by the $200 dollar increase this year and stupid upgrades.

Induction charging is very effecient , it is more effective as a convenience than something to be applied at huge scale. Each 'hop' is going to incur an additional inefficient penalty. One hop isn't great , two hops is worse , and three hops would be even worse. ( additionally more hops means more heat ... that is largely where the 'lost' power is going. )

Should really not go past one induction power transition.

. Can the next generation MagSafe battery charge a Pro Max from 10% to 100%? 😐

I suspect that is more an issue of making custom external batteries just for the Pro Max. The Apple MagSafe pack worked with iPhone Mini all the way up to the Max. ( See Compatibility section here:
)
There is a size constraint on the pack. It is a design trade-off to sell the same item in higher numbers. ( also to keep the additional weight down )

Qi2 is bringing more open competition to the "magnetically connected" battery market. There will be more 3rd parties willing to make a lower volume, higher price , much heavier battery for the niche market that wants one. ( because it will work across more than just a subset of iPhones and make up 'unit volume' problem issue that way. )

Apple did not have to comply until iPhone 17 but I’m glad they did it early.
If you have a phone that is 12 or newer you should already have a USB-C charging block if you used the supplied cable. The phones will likely come with a USB-C to USB-C cable so there is no other cables and stuff to buy unless you want extra cables, thunderbolt rated or MagSafe

What about reverse wireless charging? I don’t want stacked batteries. Talk about out of touch and WEIRD. There are salt/pepper grinders that have USB C NO LIE. Absolutely glacial pace.
