Finally came here to research whether to update to Tahoe, this is the first and most important thread for me to check out. The control panel being stuck at the bottom is a hard no for me.

I have my web browser windows positioned below the control bars of Finder and Music, and I'm not interested in changing that set-up, so I'm sticking with Sequoia.

I'm a local files only user, with my albums sorted alphabetical (last name) / chronological (like traditional music stores), and I will check out some of the 3rd party music apps mentioned in this thread. The only way I'll move to Tahoe is if there's a decent 3rd party local files app that works the way I want it with Tahoe.
What's wrong with Apple Music? You can upload your whole library without the need of a subscription. And if you upload ALAC files the format is lossless.

I can only answer with regards to my music app desires, which were pretty much fulfilled by the old iTunes app.

It's been a while since iTunes, but I guess that I've always had to painstakingly futz with the sorting to get my album view to be like a traditional music store's arrangement. Frank Zappa belongs in the Z's, not the F's, and the albums shouldn't be ordered beginning with Absolutely Free, Ahead Of Their Time, Apostrophe, Bongo Fury, Broadway The Hard Way, etc. They should start with Freak Out, Absolutely Free, We're Only In It For The Money, Lumpy Gravy, Electric Aunt Jemima, Uncle Meat, Ahead Of Their Time, etc. (I'm a little different from traditional music stores, sorted by recording date, not release date)

And the Apple Music app doesn't get all the album art correct, I've had to add the proper art for something like a fifth of the albums I've ripped. Now comes my two biggest complaints, which never happened with OS / iTunes updates. Firstly, with Music, every OS update messes up some of my painstaking work. Some albums revert to artist first name sorting, and some albums lose the proper album art. Secondly, syncing with my iPhone has never resulted in what my main source has; some albums revert to artist first name sorting, and some albums lose the proper album art.

It's too much work to fix the iPhone sorting and artwork, so I just begrudgingly live with it. The best that I can do is after fixing the OS update mess on my desktop, I delete the Music app from iPhone, disconnect both devices from internet, and download the Music folder to the iPhone, which takes hours for a nearly thousand album library.

Here's my update; evidently I've got the Mini set so as to not automatically install Tahoe, but I didn't have the same settings on the MacBook Pro, so last night it installed Tahoe. When I opened it, I immediately checked out Music. Same as it always is after an OS update; some albums reverted to artist first name sorting, and some albums lost the proper album art. It might have even lost a couple entire albums?

The MBP is really just one of my music library backups; I only ever listen to my music via Mini or iPhone, so I can't address changes in playing volume.

Sequoia is chomping at the bit to update on the Mini, so I expect that after that I will have to fix the Mini's Music, before re-syncing to the MacBook and iPhone.

What do you mean by this ?
I mean, you can upload your library to Apple Music in ALAC, and therefore lossless, format. For example, I added "Good News from the next World" by Simple Minds, which I ripped from a CD I purchased and which isn't in Apple Music library album. All this while continuing to use Apple Music as my music file manager.

Sorry I'm still a little confused by "upload" ?

Do you mean you ripped a CD to your local library ?

Ah ok. Upload to me means pushing something to the web not ripping to your local library.

Yeah, for me, as local library user, it's improved since launch. I stuck with iTunes for a long time, even using Retroactive 2.0 to use it up until Tahoe came out. So, I have only been using it for 6 months since getting the latest iMac as replacement for my old one.

Currently running Music with a library of 50,743 tracks either ALAC or AAC and it's running nicely.

It does what I need it to with a few niggles. HiFidelity is another app that works reasonably well.

Oh for crying out loud, dude... READ THIS THREAD... and, every other forum thread about the Music app/service. 😵‍💫
It's true, I'm no expert or even an audiophile, but with an Apple Music subscription and the Music App and CarPlay, I can create my playlists and listen to the music I like without any major problems. At home, I connect the MBPs to the HomePods and everything works. Honestly, I say this without intending to be polemical, but why is Apple's native app so criticized?

Sorry if this sounds harsh, but reading isn't your strong suit, is it? 😉 Read this thread. Read the threads from previous years!

‘Music’ is primarily criticised by users who previously used iTunes. However, the new generation seems to no longer recognise software quality. (I can't blame them. In recent years, even Apple has been on a downward spiral.)

On the other hand I have to agree with you! Over the past few years, I've tried just about every music playback software available on Mac. Music is still in the top ranks. Only Roon is better (for me - but it has its drawbacks that make it not worth it). Unfortunately, iTunes was superior to everything else available today. That's really tragic!

I'll reread the discussion more thoroughly, I promise, but I find the Music app valuable. I understand that iTunes was better in many ways, but perhaps because I'm not a "professional" user, I haven't grasped many of these advantages, or rather, I haven't been able to notice and appreciate them. I see that I can load my library with the ALAC files I have on a HDD and convert them to AAC with quality practically indistinguishable from lossless (but again, I don't have professional equipment or the ability to distinguish). The Apple Music subscription introduces me to those few hidden albums and tracks by late-'60s rock bands that are my passion. But, again, I use all the Mac applications very lightly and not intensively.

Haven't seen this one before.

In Tahoe 26.4, You can now have the iOS style "Now Playing" screen in Windowed mode!
View attachment 2605660
You will also notice that the "Karaoke" style lyrics are here!
But no Apple Music Sing as of right now.

Redesigned "Mini-player" too

View attachment 2605661
Also right aligned lyrics for multiple singers.
Do you know what these look like if you don't have Apple Music but instead have locally stored lyrics added in the Get Info tab?

Anyone have this weird bug in 26.4?
Step 1: open music and start playing a track.
Step 2: click the small control bar at the bottom to expand the now playing view to take up the entire window or screen.
Step 3: dismiss them now playing window/screen.
Then noticed two random buttons appear in the bottom right corner of the window, one of which just opens a grid of different colored music notes. The only way to exit this mode is completely quit Music and relaunch it, no idea what the purpose of this mode is.

In 26.4, has the UI been changed to show the total duration of the playlist on the bottom of the window of a user-created playlist again (without scrolling to the end of the playlist, i.e., is it back to the way it was before Tahoe)? And are the controls still at the bottom?

And (this is too much to ask, I know lol) have they done something more useful with all that wasted space at the top of a playlist window? Thanks.

Just updated to Tahoe 26.4, which brought Music to version 1.6.4.88.

I have an entirely local library of 70K songs, 5,000+ albums on my 2020 Intel iMac's internal SSD (Apple Music streaming service and iTunes Store unchecked in the settings). With all previous Tahoe versions, there was some serious beach-balling whenever I'd hit Shuffle on one of my smart playlists with 20K tracks or more. The duration of the beach-balling increased with playlist size, so a 60K smart playlist would take more than a minute after hitting Shuffle for the music to start. This didn't happen on Sequoia.

I'm incredibly happy to report that with this update, the stalling/beach-balling is gone! A 60,000-song smart playlist begins playing instantly when I hit Shuffle. Instantly! All around, Music feels snappier.

This is a good day. 😀

I'm alarmed at the idea of a smart playlist with 60K songs in it 🤣 , but I'm glad to hear the update fixed your beach balling.

The biggest improvement I ever got in that department was when I switched my external music folder from a HDD to a SSD. Everything snappy since then. Still on Sequoia, btw.

That's good to hear! I've been holding off updating to Tahoe for reasons such as this, so it's good to hear they are making improvements still.

60,000 song smart playlist is wild, haha. Though I also use a big smart playlist for my "all songs" and "all songs minus 1-star songs", so I can kinda understand it. What is yours for??
