How quickly does the IR disappear ? Also for the heck of it use a busy wallpaper that is loaded with color and detail and see if you notice it as much.

It takes about 20-25 mins to fully disappear. Also, I notice it during regular usage and not just when I look my desktop.

Got replacement iMac through yesterday. Iv plugged it into another screen, ran grid test, ran Prey (the game) for a while to try warm up the gfx card, ran grid test, then left computer on for a while, grid test- nothing yet, so thats a good sign. However, unfortunately, I've ordered another replacement, because this one has a noticeable lighter bottom left hand corner, same as the last one. Which is very very very annoying. Knowing my luck, the next one will have uniform brightness but really bad IR.

One week into ownership and bam, IR last night. Purple lines all over from the outlines of windows I had open. Rebooted to no avail, went to bed and no IR this morning of course. Called Apple and will start the replacement process. I will give Apple 2 chances, if its not ok, going to probably build a PC and begin my migration out of Apple for my work station.

That absolutely stinks. :(

I'm on iMac number 4 (numerous reasons), but I've still yet to see image retention on any of them. I expect this one will have it, knowing my luck...

I have only seen it one time, I want to think its just a one time incident ... But I'm not gonna take any chances, clearly Apple has some serious LCD issues (LG)

have seen IR 2 times now... totally random. It's like something just sets it off and then it's gone again. I have not seen it in a few days now... so strange

Guess I got a good one, no IR that I've seen and the only time their is light 'bleeding' at the corners is when looking at it from a wried angle, center on the light is uniform right across the 27" display.

FYI I've had it about 10 days now, knock on wood it stays all okay.

Image retention occurs when you leave a static image for a certain period of time, se 5-30 minutes. If you want to prevent it, set your display sleep to an earlier time so the pixels can rest while it is not in use.

In my case, it is not like that. I can leave a static image all day and no issue. But then, in 2 cases, I had a static image up for a bit and got severe IR on one side of my screen. Totally ODD

Received my iMac 27" around a month ago and today I noticed the IR.
I also performed a test and BAM you can clearly see it :(.

I don't want to start driving around with this iMac to the Apple stores or be without one for a while.

Will try to log a support call with Apple to get it replaced by sending a new one but this is kinda sad to see. Was so happy until now and once you notice this problem you just keep looking at it.

My wife doesn't really understand what the big deal is even when I show it to her, can't believe she finds this normal that you can see your finder window which is closed long time ago still in the background.

Actually, she's in the right - to an extent is is a normal phenomena of IPS panels. When it's visible in normal use, it's out of spec and should have a new panel.

If it only shows up on a certain background/with a certain test (those tests are designed to show up the issue even on good panels) then it's within spec.

It shows all the time on my wallpaper, I didnt first notice as my wallpaper has a lot of colors and some stripes. But whatever chrome or finder window just keeps visible.

I'm looking at my new iMac and don't see anything wrong. I'm very happy with it but I see all these threads and can't help myself.

I had to Google IMAGE RETENTION. I'm not going to look for any of these defects user are complaining about (Yellow Tint, etc.). I am tempted which is why I'm posting this but setting it up transferring 1.5TB of Data is a PITA and don't exactly want to wait another month or worst go through 2-3 iMac's.

I hate having OCD like my family & friends claim I have. LOL Back in the day I would go through exchanging 3-4 DVD's. I think this is why I started buying my Toys on kijiji not just saving vs retail but knowing I can't exchange or return it. :)

This iMac is the best computer I have ever owned. The IR I saw was over a few days... have not seen it again. I'm wondering if it was just some breaking in moment. I have yet to see it again. I'm only doing an exchange because my Apple rep insisted. Otherwise, happy to keep this machine. If I do not see the IR again before the next one arrives, I might just keep it.

Hi Guys

New to the forum, hate to also have to say that after a week the iMac has developed IR it comes and goes, its very erratic it also ghosts these strange vertical lines which look exactly like the background in the iPhone Settings menu.

The Apple representative was great and said I would have a replacement in a few days. It seems they have backup stock in London ready to ship to customers in need of replacements?!

From what I recall he was aware of the issue, and he spoke about how this was an issue on the first iMacs, I understood this to mean the first 2012/2013 manufactured iMacs, therefore is it possible these issues may have already been addressed and thus we may start seeing considerably better screens?

Edit

I've uploaded a picture, not the best but was difficult to take. You can see the ghosted icons that have this vertical imprint on them?!

Image retention on second monitor

I have an older 23" Apple Cinema Display that I've used as a second monitor with my Mac Pro since 2006. When I received my new 27" iMac in Jan. I connected that monitor to it as a second display. About a week later I began noticing the image retention problem with my iMac AND at the same time on my second monitor.
The 23" monitor has worked flawlessly with my Mac Pro for 6+ year (and still works without the IR problem when I reconnected it to the Mac Pro.). The IR problem is only apparent when connected to the iMac.
Because of this, I don't think the problem is with the iMac display, but some kind of residual charge in the VRAM.
Any thoughts on this and has anyone else noticed the problem on a second monitor attached to their iMac?

That's a very interesting theory. Something along those lines does tend to make more sense which may explain why some people are experiencing IR on multiple 2012 iMacs. I've personally owned six 2012 27" iMacs, and IR hasn't been there on a single one.

You're also not the first person to report that the issue shows up with a second monitor attached, so that helps lend credibility to that theory...

Of course there are doubtless some people out there not using an attached screen, but still have IR, so we need to figure out what's causing that...

And there are people that exchanged their iMacs and now have an iMac with no IR, so that throws a spanner in the works, too..

Hmm... theories, theories!

ok, so please forgive the rather noob question. i found i have image retention like two days ago. for some reason i turned on the visualizer in itunes and i could definitely see the windows that were open on another screen. i won't be able to get it fixed for two months (not to mention i want to wait for the wait to decrease), but i was wondering if it could damage the screen or anything else in the meantime. i notiiced if i change the desktop image it's not as bad.

THIS!!! I found that I would generally only see IR when I was running a secondary display from the iMac, or using two 2012 iMacs with one in Target Display mode. If I had them running independently the IR would usually not happen (though it did still pop up a number of times), but pretty much every time I setup a second display off of them IR would pop up.

For anyone that doesn't have IR on their new iMac, but also hasn't connected a second display, do it ASAP!!

Dumb question: How do you check for image retention?

Feel its pulse.

Or have a flat single color background image, use the computer for a bit, leave a window open for a few minutes (like a regular Safari browsing session). When you finally close it and you see the edges of the window or icons or text, then you have Image Rentention.

You can try leaving images\windows open for 10+ minutes and seeing if there's a faint remnant of it when you move or close it. You can also try this test: http://www.marco.org/rmbp-irtest.html

For me it doesn't happen until I've been using my iMac for more than 2 hours so you might want to make sure that your iMac is fully "warmed up" before testing it.
