It still defies my understanding that if your order a BTO, you cannot take it into the Apple store. It just doesn't make sense to me, its not like the techs in the stores are not certified to work on them, or don't know how.

I'm glad I bought a base configuration on mine, I would imagine that store repairs would be shorter than having to ship out the unit.

Update: Thanks to all who replied. To those who flame, shut up. your opinion is worthless.

You must obviously be new to the internet or something kid, by stating that some ones opinion, either good or bad (flame), is worthless defies the point of you even posting in the first place. Learn2Internet plox. ktnxbai

No, actually alot of posts I see on this forum are worthless crap. Alot of people love to post one liners.

"Get if fixed"
"Deal with it"
"Shouldn't have gotten it BTO"

Forum's work when ignorant people stay away. Sadly Macrumors has some great guys on it but also has some of the worst posters I have seen.

but thats the nature of the internet, and he should get used to it, there are trolls and jokers everywhere, but back to the point i was trying to make, just because what i say contradicts what you say doesn't mean i necessarily flame, and certainly doesn't mean that my opinion is any more worthless then yours is.

Mac rumors is not that bad you should experience the magical world of 4chan.

You can. You can take a BTO to an Apple store and they will work on it for you.

You cannot exchange or return because, by definition, the Apple stores do not stock BTO models.

Seriously. I've had two BTO Powerbooks, a BTO Macbook Pro, and a BTO Mac Pro and I always get them fixed at the Apple store. You only can't return a BTO.

This is nonsensical. Apple stores are owned by Apple. The OP bought a computer from Apple. The fact that they want you to return the computer to apple directly is just lazy on the part of Apple.

No, it's not. The retail Apple Stores don't stock his machine. They can't take a machine they don't stock, because they can't put it out on the shelves.

Same reason you can't take something only sold on Bestbuy.com and take it to a retail Best Buy store. The store can't do anything with the item. They can't put it on the shelves. The most they can do is get an RMA request issued and send it back, but what's the point, when that's what the original poster could do anyway?

It makes no sense.

So why not offer the convenience to your paying customers to take it back to a retail store so THEY can ship it back? Who cares if they don't stock it? It's an Apple product and an Apple store. The difference is Best Buy sells other companies products so they aren't going to take a website purchased return but we are talking about Apple made products at an Apple Store.

I've taken things back to Best Buy after Christmas and they didn't have it in stock anymore (clearance item) but they took it and gave me a refund anyway. All Best Buy (or any other store) does it ship it back to their HQ/Warehouse and write it off.

I'm going to keep this short and sweet. I'm a new Mac owner, just purchased a brand new 17" BTO, which I've owned for less than 6 days. Everything was working beautifully until about 3 days ago, when I noticed a few horizontal lines appear across the screen as I was watching a video. (this is on the 9400). I closed the lid and opened it again, and the lines were gone. I continued using the MBP normally.

Later on that night, the scan lines made a return suddenly as I was doing work, and the screen flickered and flashed before finally going black. I knew this wasn't supposed to happen.

The next day I called up Apple and told them about my problem. We went through a couple of steps such as resetting PRAM/etc. At this point the display was completely black and unusable. It would occasionally flash the desktop for a second before going out. We figured out that it was a display issue, and that the display cable or something similar was definitely loose or damaged(since the MBP output fine to an external monitor).

Anyway, the phone support rep told me to back everything up and take the unit to the Apple Store, and exchange it for a new one since I've barely owned this for a couple of days. He scheduled an appointment at the Genius Bar for July 2nd, which was 2 days later. I tried to get an earlier appointment but with no luck. I sucked it up and backed up my MBP.

So, July 2nd(Today) comes along. I took my MBP in the original box with all accessories to the Apple Store Genius Bar. After waiting almost half an hour, I finally had a Genius address my issue, only to be told that since my unit was BTO (I had a 7200 RPM drive selected), I had no choice but to mail it back to Apple. I explained to the Genius that I needed this laptop for business-related purposes and couldn't afford to waste any more time. He said he could get Apple to send me a new unit first, and then I could send back the defective MBP so I wouldn't be without a laptop for god-knows-how-long.

I drove back home, pissed that I wasted my time driving to the Apple store and waiting for my appointment, only to have them tell me they can't do anything. I called up the support line to initiate the RMA/etc, only to be told that unfortunately they can't mail me a new unit without me sending back the old one first. What?! So now I'd have to wait for my faulty unit to reach Apple and get checked out, then wait another week or so for a new unit from Shanghai?! Wtf?!

ON TOP OF THAT, I was told that the department that handles RMA's had taken off on an "early" vacation.

"What vacation?!", I asked.

"Sir, it's the 4th of July".

"NO IT'S NOT, IT'S JULY 2ND'"

"Well, I'm sorry but the department has taken off early and won't be available to assist you until Monday."

Great, just GREAT. Now I have to wait some more. This is absolutely ridiculous and I don't know what to do. I can't afford to go any longer without a fully functioning laptop. Should I call again on Monday and try to convince them to do a forward-RMA and send me a replacement unit first?

Before anyone begins flaming, I'd just like to say that I have the right to be pissed - I just bought a $2700 laptop, only to have it screw up in less than 4 days, and best of all, the downtime's interrupted some of my critical work, and now it looks like it's going to be 2 weeks before I get a new working MBP.

I'm already writing to Apple to express my dissatisfaction. They need better quality control and many users don't have time to waste and play games. As a first-time Mac owner, I'm not at all happy - I'm pretty sure I paid money for a computer that's actually supposed to WORK.

Anyway, just for wasting my time I think I'm going to ask Apple nicely for something as compensation. I think the 8GB RAM upgrade might be stretching it, but realistically what do you think I should ask for?

Wow. After reading what you wrote and how you complained to the person I don't feel for you at all. It is July 4th and now you're telling everyone who flamed you the their opinion is worthless? I thought you expected to get flamed? Make up your mind kid

Mac user just wanted to vent to an audience and feels better for it.

Computer will be replaced.

End of tale.

Hahahaha, +1

You are exactly correct. I don't understand why people do this sometimes. It actually might make the OP fell better. I know at times when I moan and complain about things it does make me feel... a slight bit better...

Best Buy?!?! Apple is no best buy. Apple builds it's reputation on outstanding machines with outstanding customer support to back it up. Best buy has pushy salespeople. Most stores have better policies than best buy. For example, Walmart takes walmart.com returns in store. Target does the same. Bestbuy has substandard customer service that is not even in the same league as Apple's. Are you telling me that Apple customer service can't even match a walmart or target?

They could, but you'd still be waiting on the RMA department to clear it, so you wouldn't get your money back/new machine until the RMA department cleared it, saving you no time.

So what's the point? Apple overnights you a box to do an RMA and pays for shipping anyway.

Best Buy has local warehouses, and they have clearance bins. Apple does not.

What is the Apple store supposed to do with the return? They can't give you money for it, it's an RMA issue. They can't give you a machine in exchange, because they don't have your machine in stock.

So really, what is the solution? A magician in back who pulls a new copy of your custom built machine out of a hat? They don't have the same machine in stock. They can't exchange. Period.

Are you seriously asking? How about doing exactly what they do with stock machines: Take a look at it and if it passes their tests, then accept the RMA. They can then either give a stock machine to the customer or push a button on their shiny computers and send a message to the warehouse to get the ball rolling. It's not like geniuses will say "oh my god, this isn't the standard 200gb hard drive, I've never seen a 500gb drive before!"

At the store they take a restocking fee and put the machine back on the shelves.

They can't do that with a BTO machine.

Even if they could send advance word to the RMA department, that doesn't change that the RMA department is closed.

I understand what you guys are saying when you say that **** happens.

However, these machines cost way more than a PC laptop of equivalent specs because of perceived superiority in quality and impervious durability, both to physical threats(bad cables) and software ones(viruses).

I say let people complain. With a dell or an acer, yes, two or three out of 100 will be messed up, but people here expect to get what they pay for.

I feel your pain. I had a tough time even buying my 13' MBP, i went to the store to buy it, then there wasn't enough people working the floor so i had to wait 30 mins till someone could sell me it, then as i was paying my debit was denied i called the bank at that moment, turns out the bank was batching their system or something (what are the odds..) so then the guy who was selling me my mac, was a genus bar worker and had an appointment, (he was a great guy even doing something out of his element) then I get switched to this other guy right now hes just like ok ill do this so Im on the phone with my bank. then a now ex- employee walks in right. so the guy who is now selling my mac to me then walks to the back to get this guys check or some bull. then has the nerve to take my MBP and iworks disk to the back with him i mean wtf slap to the face? so then Im waiting like 12 mins till he comes back out....apple really disappointed me...Sry i just needed to vent.

... um, you hadn't paid for it yet and were having "bank card" issues... for all the retail employee knew you set that up and could have been trying to scam the store... not saying you were but it could have looked fishy to the employee...

I won't flame the OP but he does have to take some things into consideration, like the holiday.

Buying a $2700 laptop and having it fail within 4 days???

As a general rule I know that if an Electronic Device if going to fail it will do so within the first 30 days typically.

How about this ....

You go in and buy a $38,000 vehicle ......

Take delivery at 8:45 at night, 15 minutes before the dealership closes.

On the way home at 9:22 PM, alarm lights illuminate warning me the vehicle was in trouble. As I was pulling off the highway the vehicle shut down. An accessory drive belt had failed. This was a Saturday night and I knew I was NOT driving anywhere until it was repaired. ( monday at the earliest )

OP - If this laptop is extremely important to your work, maybe not only should you backup your data but having a backup computer would be prudent as well. I have a desktop for this purpose.

Like you I also use my Laptop for work, but I did not make myself totally dependent upon it for the first 30 days or so. I delayed using it for work to give me a chance to exercise the entire system, play some games, burn some DVD, and other things.
