A tweaked version of Real Racing would have been much more impressive but I think showcasing the remote also played a part in their game choice. Me personally, I would loved to have seen them with a port of Wii Sports. We still whip that out for a family game from time to time.

Someone's going to make a version of air sports for the Apple TV.

I am mainly interested in Apple TV for using in Air Play mirroring to my TV. Is there any indication that the new generation model performs any better, mainly, I would assume, because of the faster processor? Otherwise I'll just get the old one at less than half the price.

thanks,

Rob from AZ

the fatal flaw behind Apples gaming aspirations is the cost of extra remotes. The wii was a success because of party games. They are limited to turn based games unless they can reduce the cost of a remote something more in line with what it should be...$29-$39

The Siri remotes they sell are for replacement purposes, so the cost of them has no bearing on the gaming aspirations. As it is you can only have one Siri remote paired to an Apple TV. You can then connect up to two further Bluetooth game pads. Or you can use an iPhone or iPod touch as a controller in supported games.

My experience thus far is that it's a (slightly?) disappointing piece of kit. The streaming assets as needed experience made playing Asphalt 8 awful (downloaded game, it installed, started and had to wait 7 minutes while it downloaded data, signed in, started tutorial, had to wait 2 minutes while it downloaded the track, raced, choose next race, had to wait another two minutes for that course to download). I wasn't sure if the HW wasn't up to playing A8, or they haven't optimized yet; but it didn't feel a smooth experience at 1080p.

I like the live screen savers. I dislike that the new device/remote doesn't seem to allow for slow scrubbing through a video (on the old Apple TV, pause and then do fast forward). I haven't tried Siri out as she isn't enabled in Germany and I haven't signed in with my UK account yet to test.

The paralex icon thing is pretty but hardly needed, the novelty of playing with an icon wears of quick.

The remote, it's fine and responded well on the few games I tried. I really wish it had "Tap to touch" like the trackpads do.

A few things I like about the new Apple having had it for about an hour and playing around with it:

1) There fact that no third party apps are installed, I can install the apps I want.
2)The remote is nice to handle, but the touchpad for navigating is no better than the old remote, I'm sure with Gaming it will be good.
3)Setup was really easy, I just put my iPhone up to the Apple TV and it took all the settings.

Things I don't like
1) The fact that you can't use Siri to type into search boxes (This is a big issue!) i.e. in Youtube or other third party apps - I find the remote too sensitive and I over shoot the letters I want to select so it takes me a lot longer to write than on the old Apple TV.
2) The Lack of apps - I know it's really early days but even with the old Apple TV, I believe Apple should have worked with Partners in the UK i.e. BBC, ITV, Channel 4 etc to get their apps onto the apple TV. Now we have a potentially long wait for these apps
3) £65 for an additional remote? what a laugh! I know the remote is a very advanced bit of kit but that seems a lot, I suppose thats why it's best to go for a gamepad.

Glad I didn't buy this now , I've got a mac mini and a PS4 , who needs this thing ?

Another missed opportunity by the penny pinching Captain Cook

I got the Steel Serie Nimbus remote. It changes everything with the games and even just for navigating around the apple TV. It was expensive in Australia @ $95 Aussie dollars but worth it. (i believe it is $49 US)
The new apple remote is horrible to use.

I'm with you there, Asphalt 8 at least seem like a very shoddy port. They seem to have been more interested in hitting release day than doing a good job. Games like Breakneck, Beach Buggy Racing and Rayman Adventures do a much better job at handling things like asset loading and they feel much more refined.

My biggest problem with it so far is the AppStore sucks. I hope they plan to improve on it down the line because content discovery is seriously, seriously bad.

1) Definitely, Siri should have been the default text entry method. It works fine on Apple Watch as a keyboard replacement, why not here. As a side note, couple of short cuts for people who haven't noticed yet, Play/Pase toggles uppercase and lowercase. Click on and holding the pad also brings up the uppercase letters, accents and more handily a backspace button, instead of having to go to the end for it.

2) Yeah the apps will come eventually, unfortunately it's nothing new for us in the UK to get the short end of the stick to begin with, sucks.

3) You don't need an extra remote. You can actually only use 1 Siri remote with the Apple TV. The remotes they sell are for replacement purposes. You can connect a further two bluetooth game pads, or use an iPhone or iPod touch as a controller in compatible games.

I am seeing some people say the podcast App is missing, this can't be for real? Apple can not be this incompetent to not have the podcast app ready for a device announced 2 months ago

I don't see the podcast app anywhere on mine.

There are a number of surprising omissions from the final product. No podcasts, Siri can't be used for text entry, the AppStore sucks big time content discovery is hopeless, Photos is a bit crap, the remote app doesn't work with the Apple TV in any meaningful way we should have had a keyboard in there at least.

Considering Tim said in the keynote they had been "working really hard and really long" on this, it shouldn't have so many glaring omissions.

I still love it, I just hope they don't drag their heels sorting out some of these issues.

Doesn't the store have categories? Can you still do slideshows and shuffle the images ?

I'm sure it'll come. I bloody hope so anyway, they can't leave the AppStore as is, it needs work.
I hope it's just launch day niggles, I can't even go into the AppStore on iTunes on my mac to look for apps, because, oh there isn't a bloody Apple TV section.

i just need to know how to change the name, we have 6 ATVs and "Apple TV" doesn't help me as a name!

WTF. I have been here defending Apple but that is total incompetence not to have that ready
What did I say? Not trying to be rude honestly! I said the reviews weren't going to be good to HELP people out from purchasing right away. But instead I got bashed for being honest and spot on!

I quite like it so far! I have a few niggles

1. this is a big niggle.. i hate the new Netflix app. they've made it like the xbox and smart TV apps. I much preferred the old Apple TV version.

2. Voice search seems quite good but when I tried it out on the Friends show like their example "find me the Friends Ep with Brad Pitt" it finds it but takes me to the single season version which I don't own.. I bought the box set so i'd still have to do a manual search when looking for box set episodes.

Seems an update to the Remote app should have been out by now.

What do you mean Photos is a bit crap? Can you set a photo album that is on Photos on a computer on the network (not synched to icloud) to be the wallpaper? Similar to how you used to be able to with iPhoto on the ATV3?
