This looks like a very nice case indeed. Thanks for the images and the comments.

Thanks for taking the time to do the review for us. I'm now fighting the need to buy the red one - I still like my gel skin back and smart cover combination however, and will have to see how much protection the back of the smart case offers before pulling the trigger, but a trip to the local Apple shop should clear that up I suppose.

Thanks for the informative video. :)
I was always wondering why Apple took so long
to come out with this smart cover + back case unit,
especially considering all the potential revenue they lost
over the years to 3rd party iPad back case sellers.
That said, considering how well Apple is doing,
I'm sure it was a well calculated decision on Apple's part
to wait till now to re-enter the iPad full case market.

Sorry to be a hater, but I think that case looks awful. I can't believe Apple would actually put their logo on it. It looks like a cheap foam case, not worth the price they are asking for it.

I'm glad you like it and all, but I think Apple could have done a lot better. There are better looking cases out there.

Your gel skin case has more drop protection than this case, just to let you know. This case is more for scratch protection for the back of the iPad.

I was a fan of the Gen 1 iPad case and I'm so glad that Apple finally put out a similar case for the Gen 3 iPad.

Different strokes I guess.

Many thanks. Excellent photos and video.

I still have my original iPad 1 case and use it ocasionally with my iPad 2 after I sold my red leather smart cover. I did not get on with the smart cover so have been using a Targus back skin only for over a year now.

Ordered the new Product Red smart case online last night as soon as I saw it and it will arrive tomorrow. I was very tempted by the dark grey for my white iPad 2 but went for red. Hope it's not too bright!

To each his own I guess. This case is exactly what I have been unsuccessfully searching for. It has a combination of features that I have been so far unable to find:

1. Complete coverage of all edges of the iPad.
2. Soft lined interior both behind the cover and in the rear shell.
3. Rear shell that is not made of hard plastic. I did not want to have to snap my iPad in a hard plastic shell and have it retained by plastic clips.
4. Supports sleep/wake.

I'm on the way to The Apple Store now!

I like this case, I just wish I can find a flexible arm that I can use this with and have it clamped to a table.

Thanks for the detailed pics.

Not sure if you have a screen protector. If so, does it bubble your screen protector? If not, do you think it will?

I just wish they had better colors. Dark grey seems the safest option, but a bit drab. Light grey, I'm afraid would get dirty easily. The other colors seems too bright. I suppose I'd have to go to the Apple store and see.

One thing I'm hoping for is that this case is lighter than my current leather smart cover + back cover combo. It never bothered me with the iPad 2, but with the iPad 3, I sometimes find myself thinking, "Gosh, is this heavy." Especially when comparing it to my partner's iPad 3, which he has in a plain TPU case without smart cover. I find myself thinking about switching to a case like his, but then I think I'd miss having the stand functionality of the smart cover. If this new case is as light as the TPU case, it could be the answer I was looking for. On the other hand, I really like the look of the navy leather smart cover I have now... Oh dear, can't make up my mind! :p

Hey OP quick question.

I bought one of these today too. However, I'm not 100% satisfied after spending 50 bucks on it. Mine feels like it is a tad too big for my iPad 3. On the left side, I feel like there is a little more gap than there should be (only by the tiniest of margins). However, before I make the trip back to the Apple store, I want to do a little research to see if this is simply what all of them are like.

Thanks,
Mike

Looks nice. Just a couple of questions:

What's your thoughts on the drop protection? How sturdy is it? How stable is the typing position?

Cheers in advance.

Seems to fit fine for me. Maybe worth returning if you're not happy with it.

Just about the same drop protection as the original 1st Gen iPad case.

So far, very sturdy. Only time will tell.

Typing position is very stable. I'd say more stable than the SmartCover.
