my dark grey will be here tomorrow. color choices are poor, as always with apple smart covers. baby blue, lime, pink, bright orange, we are not all 11; no, 9 year old girls.

Who say's you have to be a kid to enjoy bright colors?

Well after a day of use I decided to return my Dark Grey Smart Case...

And get a Red Smart case. :D

Man!!! When they say red them really mean RED!!!

I was already wondering how loose this would be on my ipad2, and now some people are saying it's kinda loose on the thicker 3. how can apple expect a perfect fit on both ipads, which are different thicknesses? So much for 'ultimate design' philosophy.
I also liked the iPad 1 case, but even it got a tad loose after a while.
the edges on this one look a little sharp if you hold a corner in your palm for a while?

Orange?!?

They made one in Orange?

Has anyone been able to determine the weight on this case?

This is interesting that Apple came so late to the table with this. I think the case design is Apple as usual - perfect - and they thought of everything (with the exception of the metal strip on the back to hold the cover in book mode) but I'm disappointed that the timing is such that I've already run through the gamut of case purchases and really happy with the two I landed on as my favorites.

Will this now entice me to purchase yet another case....

:eek::apple:

Well supposedly Jony Ive hates cases so he probably had to be dragged kicking and screaming to do this. :p

Now i dont know wich way to go Smart Case or STM Grip? Im leaning towards STM because someone said something about the smart case having a loose fit.

Thanks for the pics and the video, but does not look like it will protect much. Don't think it is for me.

Seems to fit fine for me. Maybe worth returning if you're not happy with it.

Thanks for your comment. Unfortunately, I ended up returning it. I was tempted to pick up another one, but I had a gift card for walmart so I went for a case cover since it costed me practically nothing. Maybe I'll try a smart case again soon since it seems like I may have just gotten a bad one!

I figure Apple waited after the iPad3 debut til now to offer the new case in order to clear out inventory of the smart covers. iPad 1 and 2 both had new Apple case/covers at debut, iPad3 did not. If you can get a full case for $10 more than the pricey smart cover, I'd think it would effect smart cover sales.

I posted a bunch of photos here for those that are interested.

Sadly, it's not very good. I had high hopes but it's poorly executed.

Thanks for the detailed pictures and reviews. For me, the sharp edges might be the deal breaker. But as for the loose fit, some people, in either this thread or the other one (below), have said theirs fit perfectly. Apparently there's some variation in the fit, so might be worth exchanging to see if you get one that fits better.

They did indeed make an Orange one..it's been discontinued now though.

Apple case is going back.
I got it today, too loose for my iPad 2. and if I ever get a 3 I can see where the vinyl back would get looser over time. too bad.
the ipad2 slides around inside the back cover. This case is not up to Apple design standards IMO.
Disappointed. plus they should have offered it in black with a tighter fit in 2 sizes, for iPad2 and iPad3.

I looked at it today and the Apple Genius person let me put their iPad 2 in the case (the one they use to check in customers) and I was just not impressed. It was a little baggy and sagged in the back area. I know it said it was for the iPad 3 and 2. I sure it fits the 3 better. It was also hard to open since the front cover was smaller then the exterior of the back case, it took a couple of tries.

I think the big problem is they tried to make a case for the iPad 2 and the iPad 3 ?....seeing as how my iPad 2 cases didn't fit the iPad 3 at all, and vice versa, I can't see how they can make one case for both... really a stupid move on Apple's part , after all this time waiting for them to make a back and front case, it seems to be a fail.....

Had mine on my iPad 3 for about 24 hours now so I feel like I can give my impressions:

Pros:

-Smart cover has enough magnetic strength to stay firmly attached to the iPad screen when help upside down.
-Sleep/wake works every time.
-Typing position works reasonable well.
-The cutouts on mine were positioned well and all buttons responded nicely.

Cons:

-The edges of the case are poorly done. They're sharp and I noticed that mine are not perfectly flat, there is a waviness to them.
-The ring that holds the iPad in the Smart Case does not cover the edges of the iPad completely. On the left side near the Smart Cover hinge I can actually see the space between where the metal back of the iPad meets the glass screen. This does not happen on the bottom or right side of the ring but also does occur to a small degree at the top.
-The video standing position seems like it literally could fall over if I breathed on it.
-Placing the iPad into the case was actually difficult and I had to press on the corners more than I was comfortable doing.
-The instructions show that the left edge of the iPad should be placed in the case first and then the right corners should be snapped in place. No matter how hard I pressed (I placed as much pressure as I felt comfortable with) I couldn't get the right side corners in. Eventually I reversed Apple's installation method by placing the right side in first and then snapping in the left corners. Only then I was able to get the iPad in the case.
-It's too expensive and it doesn't look or feel like it is.

I'm returning mine and buying a higher quality product, after all there are dozens out there.

Damn just ordered one!

I ordered my gray one yesterday, looks like it's delivered tomorrow. Now after seeing this thread I regret getting it, but I guess I'll have a chance to see/review it myself.

Reason I got it is because I currently have black leather smart cover with the Incipio Smart Feather back case, which i put in a zip up leather pad case. Well the other day i was unzipping my case and the angle allowed the ipad to slide/rotate out and land edge first onto concrete!:eek:

It flattened the corner of my new iPad, luckily i think the feather case/smart cover helped a bit (exploded off the ipad), so no glass damage only the aluminum edge deformed/flattened...only I notice it moved the glass up about <1mm from the corner...luckily that's it. But it was enough for me to consider a new way to protect it.

Saw the new Apple case and saw it covered the corners all around so I ordered it...but these reviews do show how its not made well...and no leather option!

Wow it took me like less than 10 seconds to snap it in place. Mine fits very snug. No gaps or anything. I do agree about the edges though, they are pretty sharp, which is is unfortunate.

Interesting to see people having fit issues with this case.

I initially had the Dark Grey and went back to the Apple Store the next day to get the Red. I have to say that my second case had a better fit.

It's a bit hard to put on, isn't very protective... but it's very light, and grippy. If you're holding it by the left (cover fold) edge, it's not very sharp either. Definitely less painful than the iSkin Solo Smart with the polycarbonate spine with the magnet bar in place.

I fear that Apple's QC is slipping, given all the issues reported on this thread.

The sharp edges are kind of a bummer.

Thanks to the OP for the high res photos. Good job.

I also use a dock to charge my iPad, so I guess I'll stick with the smart cover.

I love my Smart Cover ... Have used it for over a year. The problem I have with it is that without a locking back case like the ZUM or I-Blason, it keeps coming off the iPad and not when I want it to.

And the problem with those back cases is the cracking of the corners. In fact, my 3 week old I-Blason has big chunks breaking off at each corner.

I have given up on that combo and just placed an order for the Apple Smart Case. Hopefully, this one will end the frustration. Will repost when it arrives.
