I'm anther one who would like to know if there are magnets on the back to hold the front in place. Many thanks.

Will Apple Release an iPad "Back Shell" only Case?

It would be nice if Apple could release just the "back shell" portion of the new SmartCase alone, to target those of us that already own an Apple SmartCover, as well as others that prefer being able to conveniently remove the "front cover" at will.

Question for the OP...does the dark grey show fingerprints and smudges like some cases do in dark colors?

I'm trying to decide between the dark and light greys. Thanks in advance.

No prints

Just about the same drop protection as the original 1st Gen iPad case.

So far, very sturdy. Only time will tell.

Typing position is very stable. I'd say more stable than the SmartCover.

Thanks for the reply. Appreciate it...

I posted this in the other thread, but this is my take on this case:

https://forums.macrumors.com/threads/1383702/

I just stopped by the Apple store to pickup one of these, I returned home without it. I thought for sure this would be a great case, but I was not impressed. My biggest complaint was the loose fit. It would obviously stay on, but the long edge away from the hinge would easily pull away from the iPad just trying to hold onto it and I know that would drive me nuts. Also, while it wasn't real weak, the magnet was not strong enough to reliably hold the cover closed. The quality just didn't seem to be on par with my leather smart cover, so I guess I'm passing on this one.

Just also picked mine up from the Apple Bluewater (UK) store.

Great case in my honest opinion, only gripe is that it's hard to open.

The lid seems to sit behind the lip of the case so you spend a few seconds fumbling around to catch your fingers onto the lid to open, hopefully a bit of stretching might sort this out.

Just a quick heads up, you probably already know but don't forget to get student discount on it - got about £3.50 off mine.

I bought the red one. I'm kinda of regretting the color choice. I wonder if they'll let me exchange it?

Bought mine today (dark gray), I'm really liking this case a whole lot even though it's generations too late. And mine fits like a glove.

I picked one up today and it feels really loose. I like the concept but for $55 (cdn) I don't think this is a keeper.

Quick question, will it still work with the iPad dock? Possibly a deal breaker if it doesn't fit. I'd love to pick the dark grey one up, looks nice!

I bought one and it's going back. I don't like how far it sticks out around the edges. Mine isn't a tight fit either - I can see gaps. I also noticed fingerprints right away - a deal-breaker for me. It's overpriced and definitely not worth $50.

I'm leaning towards taking mine back as well. It's especially loose on the top.

OP, thanks for posting the pictures and video.

Just last week I purchased a Smart Cover and hard plastic shell for my new iPad. I really was interested in picking up the Smart Case and returning my current setup, but I am not sure if I will. It seems that the Smart Case offers no protection for the back of the iPad from anything except minor scratches. Also, it seems advantageous to be able to remove the "cover" portion. I find myself taking off the Smart Cover if I am holding the iPad with both hands.

Is anyone with the Smart Cover/Hardshell combo sticking with what they have, or does the Smart Case seem to be better? My one gripe with the shells is that they do scratch fairly easily. I wish the Smart Case had a plastic shell that the iPad snapped into, but its exterior was the same material as the cover.

If your apple store isn't too far from you, I would exchange the case. You guys might have gotten a bad batch or something. Open it at the store and see. If you don't like it after that, then return it.

I was already wondering how loose this would be on my ipad2, and now some people are saying it's kinda loose on the thicker 3. how can apple expect a perfect fit on both ipads, which are different thicknesses? So much for 'ultimate design' philosophy.
I also liked the iPad 1 case, but even it got a tad loose after a while.
the edges on this one look a little sharp if you hold a corner in your palm for a while?
my dark grey will be here tomorrow. color choices are poor, as always with apple smart covers. baby blue, lime, pink, bright orange, we are not all 11; no, 9 year old girls.

It certainly seems to be a lot lighter than many backshells + smart cover... but you lose the advantage of slight shock protection with the gel or thicker plastic ones. But the edge seems somewhat buffered, due to the lack of the bar+magnets as seen on the Smart Cover.

On the ones I was handling in the store (the Apple staff had a few put onto their iPad 3's), they didn't seem loose around the top or bottom edge the way Breezer or Guinness did. I'm leaning towards a bad batch there. The magnet seems no worse than the ones on current Smart Covers, as those don't hold the cover's weight very well when flipped over either (unless you've got your fingers supporting two of the four bars.

Pity the Product Red one isn't a darker red like the leather one; the current one's very orange-y in comparison. Maybe next year Apple'll get some black or Navy Blue ones out there, to match the look of the leather Smart Covers.

I got one earlier today for the new iPad and it fits just fine. Not loose at all. I like it s far.

Bought a dark gray at my local Apple store today. Brought it home and found that the top left corner of the back shell was not cut properly. The other 3 corners were equally rounded and smooth, this corner was jaggedly formed. Went back to the store and within an hour of purchasing it the peg which previously had 6 in stock was empty. An employee went to the back and brought a new one out. The other pegs with all other colors were fully stocked, guess they're having no trouble selling them in dark gray at least. Haven't put the new one on my iPad yet but will report back once I do.

Just got a red one and it's very forgiving on fingerprints. It fits flawlessly on the iPad 3rd Gen without any gaps. The cover is held by the magnets tightly too. So far it feels really great to use with some minor flaws though. The cover isn't very easy to open because the cover sits so flush with the frame that you nearly need to use your fingernail to open it up. I wish Apple designed a little tab to make it more easy top open.

Video stand isn't sturdy enough for you to interact with the touchscreen, just like the Smart Cover. Is it worth $50? Not really, but it's really well refined and thin unlike any other similar folio case. Although, some do a better job being more sturdy when using it as a video stand. There's really great drop protection around the corners because of that stiff frame that keeps the polyurethane neatly stretched. I wouldn't be surprised if it saved the iPad's glass screen from cracking if dropped corner side first.

A full detailed review will be up on Gadgetmac, soon. :)

If any of you are having issues with the fit and finish, suffice to say you've got a defective Smart Case. Mine is perfect all the way around.
