your father is right, he doesnt need a MBP.

my parents are the same way. ive suggested they get one but theyre content with a $400 laptop as web surfing and skype is all they need; which, when you think about it, are the needs of 95% of MBP users anyway.

i always laugh at the old people at the back of the apple stores getting help on how to operate a computer. their kids told them "macs just work", "theyre so easy to use" when in reality theyre forced to learn a whole new OS, and theyre not tech savy in the first place.

Yep. Some people just are so used to what they're used to that they refuse to look beyond, and it's just not worth trying to convince them.

Example: my parents decide to buy a digital camera. They get the cheapest, $99 model that's on sale at the local drugstore. It is of course slow and unresponsive and takes rather poor pictures. I offer to buy them a nice one for a birthday or Christmas present: a good snapshot camera that will take nice pictures and be fairly responsive. They balk at the $300-400 price range that I'm proposing, insisting that it's too expensive and "this one will do just fine". OK, fair enough. Except that they've bought 3 or 4 different cheapo cameras over the years to get over one frustration or another. If they'd just let me buy them the nice one in the first place ... !

its not about looking beyond.

its about paying 4 or 5 times extra relative to your actual needs.

if his dad isnt into all the media software, doesnt need "to get things done", and just wants something for email, web, games, then i dont see why he should spend so much just to try something new.

Why the dilemma? He wants a Windows PC, let him buy one. Use an AV program and he'll be fine. Use NIS 2011 and he can surf porn till his hearts content and remain problem free. Windows 7 is an excellent operating system.

No offence, but did you get the part where I said I don´t have a clue about PCs? I haven´t touched one in years.
Building one is certainly not on top of my list

Ops didn't read that, custom build doesnt mean you need to do it. You can get a local PC shop to build one to order and retain the long warranties you get with each part (usually 5 years). Seems you want a simple solution in the form of a laptop. If it was me and I wanted my father to have a Mac I'd just buy him a Mac with my own money

I think Apple should lower their prices a bit, or start offering a lower end model of laptop (business class macbook maybe around 450-500$) and maybe alter the Mac Pro prices a bit. If they did that the Windows market would probably be in some serious trouble. I hear alot of my own clients exclaim, "I would get Macbooks in my business but we are not at a point where we can pay double for something." "We can just get a Dell with our discount." Lower priced Laptops or a business model please. : ) The iPad just can't do everything the Macbook can.

(I added the Mac Pro part because I just want it ahhaha)

I just spit up.

Can you even use the term, "Business Class" in the same paragraph as $500? Surely that's against forum rules.

Right. I can see the CEO of Exxon whipping out his NetBook at the next board meeting.

If he doesn't need a Mac, just get a cheap pc contrary to popular belief they don't just crash on their own. As long as he isn't downloading crap it should do just fine and he'll have more then enough power to do what he needs to do. You don't need to spend extra cash if it isn't necessary.

X2. Unless your dad is into some seriously filthy porn I don't think he has to worry about viruses.

Lol jk

Seriously though, I know plenty of people who never have problems with pc, me being one of them.

Lol well that is what it is. I don't see Apple producing a 500 laptop that would be anything different. We could call it.. Macbook Light/Lite or "something" class or give it a :magical: name. It would still be compared to business class laptops.

I have spent zero dollars (free) to setup protection for every conceivable threat to the new ThinkPads I use alongside my MBP's.

Takes less than 20 min per computer, including the three minute Google search for the software.

It's 2011 people, the virus/malware myth is BS with a minimum of common sense. Fear of PC's is for novice storytellers.

I've not had any downtime or problems with PC security in over a decade. Get over it. Sorry to deflate your PC bashing excuse.

If you can't handle one, you should be using a pencil & eraser.

I just took a look at Dell's website. A 13" business class notebook, comparable to the 13" MacBook Pro or MacBook, is the Latitude 13.

http://www.dell.com/us/business/p/l...6:GMA~10:HDCAM~11:W7P3NE&model_id=latitude-13

Now, that's not fair. The US price is $459. The Canadian price for the exact same item:

http://www.dell.com/ca/business/p/l...6:GMA~10:HDCAM~11:W7P3NE&model_id=latitude-13

$929

Tell him that a Macbook will make him feel younger. Also, the back apple logo glows in the dark.
That should be a killer.

Agreed, you should be versed in both to be more versatile in professional careers. "Hey this won't work on my PC.." "Sorry I made it on a Mac." That is encountered at times when transfering different kinds of documents and presentations. Hence the continual updating of compatability within these programs across platforms.

Honestly I agree you have to go a little out of your ways these days to get infected. Warez, porn, yep you risk it. Stay away and your PC should run pretty clean. Simply bashing a platform shows childlike ignorance. Just because Apple has the best ergonomics and durability, doesn't make it especially better than Windows. Both have flaws and pluses. I've had around 4 or 5 Macbook/Minis is the past 2 years. I love both platforms for different reason and do not especially think one is better than the other within a small margin.

this is easy sell....

point your dad to your local craigslist....show him how much used macbook pro's go for and how much used pc laptops go for...

dad enjoy your mac ;-)

Well, I don´t think I´ve bashed any platform here, and I started using Macs backin 1997 so I presume Windows is a fine os now. It´s just not for me, as the software I use is Mac only.

I don´t think he will download any crap, he probably dosen´t even know what torrent is and when it comes to p..., I really don´t want to know, but doubt it will be a problem.

Guess it´s more down to seeing how happy he became with his iPhone and could never fo back to another phone (or so he says) it would be nice if he could experience a Mac as well.

I´v been looking at an Asus 17" with i5, NVIDIA GeForce GTX 460M, 4GB RAM,
looks like a monster, but he will only move it a few times a month.

Sounds like a good machine. Especially since Windows 8 comes out in what ... a year? The above poster about resale value had a good point. He will still wanna play his flight sim and I think price/performance ratio he would have a better (far) experience with the updated GTX chip! Don't get me wrong, the 320m and 9600 chips in Macbooks are good.. but this is better. Also like someone else said, "He is set in his ways already."

Let him get what he wants, and then if he runs into a problem you can't handle, tell him to take it somewhere and pay to get it fixed.

Hi everyone. Thanks for posting.
My father bought the Asus mentioned earlier in the thread.
He is just waiting for delivery in the next couple of days

I should think so, but did you look at the vents at the back of the thing?
Need some serious cooling

I´ll let my brother set it up, as he is a programmer.
He dosen´t live next door how ever, but I guess I´ll be seeing him a bit more often;)
