I agree with the thread starter. This is unfair considering :apple: updates their lineup each year.

Awww, booo hooo. It's very fair. You sign a 2 year contract and are eligible for a new subsidized phone every 2 years (actually 18 months I think) as per the contract you signed. AT&T shouldn't void millions of contracts because Apple released a new phone. Motorola, Nokia, Samsung, etc, release new phones practically every other week and AT&T doesn't make exceptions for those customers, they shouldn't make them for iPhone users either.

Welcome back, Samcraig!

Maybe, in your infinite wisdom, you can also explain why "Golden Knight" is racist?

It's spelled "gyped" as in gypsy.

kkachurak.

You have been at this for 4 1/2 hours over straight! Had time to use the toilet? :)

I have to admire your ability to take some serious flak and your argument is not completely ridiculous, but your resistance on this subject is.

Had you have been fortunate and the rule was set at $89 and received your subsidised upgrade, someone else paying $88 for example would lose out.

You have to set the bar somewhere.

The "Computer says no...." and no amount of remonstrating is going to change that, the people at AT&T are 'just following orders' for better or for worse, (where have I heard that before…?)

Have some sympathy for us in the UK; I will look forward to your posts if AT&T tries to charge you $25 a month extra for tethering as they are over here. AT&T are looking like the good guys compared to O2 (the 'ONLY' carrier we have for iPhone)

You see, somebody somewhere in the world needs to get 'screwed over' in order for someone else to get paid.

It’s nothing personal, it is just economics. Not saying it is right, just saying that’s how it is and the sooner you realise the sooner you can use the toilet!

Just in case you want to correct my spelling, yes I have used S’s instead of Z’s because I am writing in English in it’s purest form! :;)

I was joking that "Golden Knight" is racist. I just find it humorous how you guys like to argue and go over each other's words with a fine toothed comb. Anyway, it was being sarcastic to the reference to "gipped".

So wait.

AT&T would prefer to keep me in my iPhone 3G until December? Because that is when I would've been eligible for the $200 price.

Let's assumed I waited until December. And all the hoop-la surround the iPhone 3GS had died down. I think to myself, "Self, I've waited this long, and for sure another phone is right around the corner in June - I can wait a bit longer".

Then, in June, my contract is up, and a new phone is released. And it's available on [insert competing provider here].

Seems like kind of a dumb plan. Why not just get me locked in for sure right now during all the hype and secure me until summer 2010 rather than risk losing me in summer 2009?

Oh right, as it has been explained here - I'm not a "cash cow" and therefore "not worth it".

Possibly because the higher ups at AT&T know when the iPhone exclusivity contract ends and it's not 2010.

I've used the restroom twice and have had lunch. For the record.

Also, for the record. Had the "line" been established at $89 and I had been paying $88, I would still be upset.

This is a special device that broke all the rules. It required a different voicemail system, unique billing system, etc. So why is the upgrade system so damn stringent and applies to the iPhone like the rest of their shoddy products?

The bottom line is - it shouldn't. You shouldn't 'stick it to your customers' when they are using your service JUST to use this device. It makes them love the device but dread the provider. And that's not what you want when the device goes multi-provider.

Possibly because the higher ups at AT&T know when the iPhone exclusivity contract ends and it's not 2010.

Ya, I had mentioned before that was conjecture on my part and it still is. I'm just giving an example and you certainly make a sound counter-point.

Yup, buying you a new phone now is losing money. By the numbers you'll re-sign before your contract is due. If not and you bolt, they will still be ahead by not giving away money to customers like you.

Just about every good electronic product gets refreshed every year.

true, but not on many items YOU SIGN CONTRACTS ON. like the blackberry, maybe a new one every 1.5-2 years, or lg phones every 2 years. there should be some fine print for the apple contracts...or a 1 year contract option

I was hoping you were not really as uptight as your thread suggests, lighten up!

Also, for the record. Had the "line" been established at $89 and I had been paying $88, I would still be upset.

Wow, you have proved my point (and I do not think you realise), somebody will always feel aggrieved as somebody else will be paying less. So you are saying everybody should get a free lunch?

This is a special device that broke all the rules. It required a different voicemail system, unique billing system, etc. So why is the upgrade system so damn stringent and applies to the iPhone like the rest of their shoddy products?

No it is an iPhone, which is a unique device which they ALL know we will pay for. You pay, I pay. And we get what we pay for, we do not get value for money, but we get the iPhone. If I make a principled stand such as you, I would not upgrade and get an urm... arr.....Nokia N9,,,something. If it is so shoddy why are you so craven?

The bottom line is - it shouldn't. You shouldn't 'stick it to your customers' when they are using your service JUST to use this device. It makes them love the device but dread the provider. And that's not what you want when the device goes multi-provider.

No, the bottom line is making money. AT&T are not there for your benefit, and not mutual benefit. I do not run my company then share out the profits at the end of the year!

Damn those capitalists :D
