i have my fetch set to hourly and i get emails coming through more often than that as well..

but i can compare it to push with yahoo and it is not the same...its not instantaneous and its not push. I am not sure what exactly you are arguing

This is weird, I swear my GMail and college mail are pushing with 3.0 GM. Today, on about 3 occasions, my phone made the mail received sound and i was confused since i dont have Yahoo Mail or any push mail at all. My gmail and college mail are set to manual, not fetch, but there on my homescreen was a badge with the number of unread messages on the mail icon. Coincidentally however, they only happened when I was on a phone call:confused:

synchronizing folders through imap isn't fast as a pop check; so if anyone quits mail during a check, the check continue in background and within a minute or two you may receive a new mail alert. that counts as a manual fetch i thing.

Yes but i havent opened mail all day (except for checking the "pushed" messages) and even after that i made sure i force quit mail when i was done with it to save RAM and battery and it still pushed.

I just wanted to confirm that my Gmail accounts along with my 1 Yahoo! account (used for push Beejive) are all pushing since i updated to the 3.0 beta (legally, father is a registered developer, so my UUID is registered as well).

Can anyone else also confirm that there email is pushing as well on 3.0? Thanks!

I know my dad's iPhone is also pushing his Gmail accounts along with his Me account too.

I think I must not understand what 'pushing' is. My iPhone on 2.2.1 picks up my Gmail before it shows up on my PC on the Gmail website... isn't that pushing?

is gmail pushing now in 3.0? is there a way to activate gmail push? both my email accounts are gmail, so if I could just turn off fetch and have everything push it would be so convenient.

Google Mail is pushing for me, and it has done since I got 3.0 on Friday gone.

Obviously you do have to go into Prefrences > Mail, calender and contacts > Fetch New Data and make sure push is on.

Thats all there is to it, or it was for me.

Then go to Advanced >GMail >Fetch.

My yahoo account has a PUSH, FETCH, and MANUAL option. Gmail only has the FETCH and MANUAL option, which uses the FETCH schedule of every 15 mins to go look at the server. It's not actually using the PUSH notifications.

Too funny. you don't really know what is push email. :)
The iPhone fetching gmail email is NOT pushing email to a device.

im sure we have had false alarms about this in the past?

some people saying it only works on wifi etc. surely google would announce it as a service if they were really doing real push? maybe they are just testing it and its only to some users and its on and off. then eventually they will announce it (no doubt in beta form) soonish..

Exactly. Google would tell everyone this just as they did when they gave 1gb for email space, and free IMAP.

This is getting confusing.
I go in my 3GS i choose PUSH
I go into ADVANCED and i see
MAIL = FETCH for google
CONACTS = PUSH for google
CALENDAR (main) = FETCH for google
CALENDAR (main) = FETCH for google

If google cal is supposed to be doing PUSH, then should i see PUSH for these calendars, just like the CONTACTS?
Push, is Google originating the update to the iPHONE.
FETCH, is the iPhone pinging Google to see if there is any updates & getting them if there is.

Can anyone verify that their ADVANCED Section under PUSH, shows their google calendars as PUSH instead of FETCH?

I was just thinking of something.
My Calendars are all setup using CALDEV - and they all show FETCH
My CONTACTS are setup using Exchange to Google - and it shows PUSH.
Is it possible that PUSH would work if I had setup the Calendar as EXCHANGE instead of CALDEV? hmmm

---update---
Ok i did a test. I had CONTACTS turned on for the exchange sync.
I did not have the calendar turned on, since i had set the calendar up via caldev.
I turned OFF the caldev calendar.
I turned ON the Calendar within exchange.
I go to ADVANCED, and there it is... it shows both contacts & calendar are now doing PUSH!
So it would appear, PUSH is only supported via Exchange sync, and not Caldev?
