My Gmail Accounts are PUSHING in 3.0

Fortunately, i'm a Mac user and I have MobileMe. I edit my calendar in iCal or on my iPhone and contacts are in Address Book. I never use the web interface. I guess Apple wants to make it slightly less convienient for PC users so that there's one more reason to buy a Mac. Makes sense to me.

I have push on my phone right now - for free thanks to Live@edu and others who are at companies with exchange have it as well. Just because Yahoo's push is unreliable doesn't have ANYTHING to do with Google not offering it. I highly doubt Yahoo's push is artificially being crippled by Apple.

Sure thing. Just use IMAP IDLE.

I've got a Nokia E71 and using ProfiMail (an e-mail client) I have free push e-mail from any provider that supports IMAP IDLE (most IMAP providers do.) At the moment I get push e-mail from both GMail and my employer.

Oh, you meant using the iPhone? Well... uh... see Apple hasn't added support for the IMAP IDLE standard to their software, so you'll have to rely on one of two proprietary implementations and hope they work. :/

Indeed. In fact, as soon as Apple starts supporting IDLE on the iPhone there will be hundreds of options for free push, as most modern IMAP servers support it. (GMail does too, as a matter of fact.) I suspect that Apple hasn't implemented IDLE for precisely this reason -- many people might ditch MobileMe if they could use a functionally-identical push e-mail solution for free.

Nope. It's actually fantastically efficient; all you need is to send a single packet every 29 minutes, plus whatever you use downloading the messages.

Even if you have to up the NOOP command frequency due to a faulty NAT setup (ahem, O2) it's still not bad.

(Anecdotal evidence alert!) I've got an E71 using IDLE for two accounts and I still get 2-3 days off a charge.

That's kinda the point -- Apple could "enable" push for GMail and hundreds of other providers simply by implementing the IDLE standard in their mail client. (Heck, Leopard already supports it, albeit with a somewhat buggy implementation.) The ball is most decidedly not in Google's court...

YOU never said they had to work for you. But *I* have very reliable push mail (Exchange) and for FREE.

GTFO the thread. I'm sick of moronic sophistic arguments on these forums. You don't actually have a point. Just because something doesn't exist (by your definition alone, I might point out) doesn't mean it can't or won't exist. All sense and logic tells us that Google will implement push email, not solely because its competitors already have it (Yahoo), but because that is where the technology is going (especially as convergence devices become ubiquitous). We also realize that technology inevitably becomes cheaper. This explains how Google is able to offer a suite of products (mail, maps, search, calendars, etc) for free, and why it is very likely that push email will be added to that suite in the future. Moreover, since push is but one aspect of an email service (all of which costs money), it makes no sense to suggest that you can't have free push services because it's too expensive - a few years ago it would have been too expensive to offer users gigabytes of storage space on mail accounts - obviously such isn't the case anymore, and logic suggests the same will be true of push services. Finally, there are also several examples of free push email services (regardless of your inability to figure them out). So please, don't say that others fail because they try to explain things to you - by my account you're more or less the definition of the word.

NO! Quit spewing these lies! Those are NOT the only two options everybody. Many also have the option of using exchange accounts through their place of employment, or are like me and attend an institution that provides Microsoft's live@edu service, which provides exchange capabilities (including PUSH EMAIL) for FREE and that can be added to the iPhone. That equals PUSH e-mail.

There is also an individual on the Howardforums forum offering free push e-mail accounts as well. Again, there are plenty of options for individuals to pursue if it's that important to them.

No problem. I also forward my gmail account to it. I prefer gmail but this is my solution until Google gets onto adding it.

In theory yes, but plenty of people there trust him and if your e-mail is really that important then don't use it I guess. Depends on how much you want push.

Do you have a school e-mail? Try and log into it and see if it uses Exchange. I log on through mine through my school's website, I think you should be able to.
