Not only doesn't it stand out, but I had 2 employees yesterday tell me that I didn't need it (I have a 2018 MacBook Pro). I was playing with it for quite a while when a manager brought over an employee to show me all the features and she was very enthusiastic about the new 16". I did end up buying it and am very glad that I did after using it for a day. This is not the first time I was advised that I didn't need to update while in the store. It is nice that Apple doesn't hassle you when you just want to look at or try out a product but I can't imagine that Tim would be happy with telling a customer that they don't need something.
Haha funny !

When you say more dead space at the sides of web pages, shouldn't it look effectively the same assuming it defaults to the same 1680x1050 resolution as the 15" did? Or does the screen now default to 1920x1200? I don't think it does as everything would look noticeably smaller if it did.

The flip side is that Split View on the 16” has 768 pixels wide in which to display a web page which is analogous to the iPad in portrait mode. 3072/2=1536@2x/2=768@2x

Apple surely didn’t pull that 3072px width out of their asses. Use that to your advantage.

So I went to check out the 16" MBP at the Apple store today and my first impressions are exactly as you describe.

For anyone who loved the 2015 15" MBP the 16" MBP is perfect. They feel VERY similar in size and weight. The keyboard does NOT feel like the stand alone Magic Keyboard. It feels much closer to older MBPs. It actually feels closest to the old 2010-2015 Macbook Air. Which is good if you like that keyboard (I loved it). Less resistance and slightly less travel than the 2015 era MBPs in case anyone is wondering.

For me personally...Eh. I don't want a smaller screen and I don't want a heavier computer than what I already have in my 2017 15" MBP. And besides the reliability issues (which I'm just sitting over here praying don't hit me) I actually don't mind the butteryfly keyboard, especially the 2019 version which is A LOT better than 2016-2017.

After handling the 16" MBP, I'm actually thinking about either sticking with my 2017 MBP until it breaks or doing a quick upgrade to the 2019 15" MBP since that is the version I would actually like to own in the long term. This isn't meant to be anything against the 16" MBP. But the size difference IS noticeable.

As a industrial design major I honestly don't know how there can be so much discussion about two products that are essentially the same in appearance. They are both minimalist laptops, there isn't much to discuss to begin with. One isn't more "modern" than the other because its .6" larger. These discussions are pretty pointless. Spending your time learning about famous artwork would probably be more beneficial if you care so much about design.

As the years go on I only feel more and more confused by the obsession of many with the tiny appearance changes in their products, instead of focusing on the actual performance/usability improvements. My 11 Pro looks the same as my XS but it's a much better phone in so many metrics and probably my favorite phone of all time. It's the same deal with this new laptop. Yet countless people would say that both products are "boring" and not worth it because of that. I'd much rather the improvements they've made with this generation compared to a new design just for the sake of a new design with no actual performance benefits. The MacBook pro is still the gold standard in laptop design and will be for the years to come, even with a screen bezel.

I do have a sneaking suspicion that the community that complains about a lack of physical changes is actually somewhat of a vocal minority and that the recent shift in Apple's design ethos represents the acknowledgment that the majority of users will buy the product if they focus more on usability and performance while still maintaining good design practices. I'm excited to have a bit of "old Apple" back again and I think the sales for the new phones and MacBooks will push them to continue on this trend in the future.
I think Apple is satisfied with the way these laptops look. They are fixing the problems--keyboard and thermals and they are innovating in speakers (for now).

I would not expect a change to the way these look for the next several years, if at all.

We'll get better screens and better speakers---that's where the innovation will be, as well as keeping them in the same price slot. Doing better quality for the same price is innovative.

I actually tried typing a Long document on the 16" and I find my fingers tire out more when compared to typing on my 15" 2019 base model

So my conclusion is this, at least for me and in my opinion:

The new keyboard is great for short typing such as typing a username/password

The old keyboard is good for long documents

Wow I’m very surprised to hear this take

I think 99% of people would disagree with his take as well.
For what it’s worth, I tried the new keyboard for all of a minute in the Apple store and I wasn’t in love. But I’m surprised that the older design is better when typing for longer.

OP has a history of making troll threads and everyone is falling for it
Wait, so this is the guy who posted that he was "upset about the new 16" MacBook Pro" last Wednesday and said "Thicker, heavier, bulkier. No thanks!" And yet two days later he posts about how he's disappointed with the new 16" he just received in the mail? Something doesn't add up.

Actually, Apple does not ship their items through the US mail; they use either FedEx or UPS. Also, if someone lives in a large urban area as the OP hints that he does, why bother with ordering online, especially since he was going for the base model anyway? Why not just go to one of the several Apple retail stores available in his area and pick one up there? I agree that something does not add up here.....

I've been using the 16" as my sole computing device since I got it, and it's starting to grow on me.

I might just keep it, but I am not sure yet at all.

If I did, hypothetically, I have not a clue what I'd do with my 2019 15" base model 😫

Well I should add that I don't normally type a lot.

So I actually prefer this keyboard because typing short stuff it's better IMO.

I bought it bc I felt that if 16" could make me more productive then it's worth it.

But I'm finding out it's not really that different but that's because it's only .6" bigger

15" MBP 16-19 is like the sister you date; beautiful, slim, chic, but fundamentally not much more than eye candy. Finicky about touch, flips out at the slightest crumble on her dress, flushes and faints at just a touch of exertion or heat.
16" MPB 19 is like the sister you marry; a little thicker all around and not as elegant, but still beautiful (with a bigger, better smile), doesn't mind a little manhandling, and tough enough to handle anything you throw at her like a champ and keep on chugging.

After a few days of use, I will say:

The battery life is AMAAAAAAZING!!!

I'm still at 50% and I've been using it so much.

Spectacular battery life. I have to give Apple 100% credit for this.

I live in a condo and 3 neighbors in the building already have the new 16" MBP and two office workers now have theirs. It looks like an insane amount of sales for this particular machine albeit using my certainly skewed sample size.... but.... dang.
