It's one of two:

1. You all have been feeding the troll, a pretty good one if I may add.

2. OP has serious issues and needs immediate attention.

In all honesty that was a very stupid thing to do, even though I found it funny that the OP insisted on returning machines that often... OP could have asked a sales rep for help in choosing the right system for him, instead of this hassle.

Plus, you get what you pay for. I guess nowhere on the box was there a label indicating the MacBook would work with your Laserjet, so is it a defect in the product? No. That your software doesn't run properly and that you feel bad about running Windows on a Mac is your fault for not doing proper research (or ANY research for the matter). Instead, Best Buy had to suck it up.

I hope a Best Buy rep reads this, takes note of all the machines, finds that 1 suspicious account in their system and flags it. So then, the next time you even try to step in to a Best Buy they will gently tell you to turn back. I hope you had fun while it lasted.

No need to research if I have this luxury. If I was making a purchase on something that couldn't be returned, you can bet a lot of research would have went into it first.

What about all the stress and obvious annoyance of your family, and the loss of money by (foolishly) promising them money if you returned the computer? Could have been avoided.

I can't tell you how much time I've saved by doing online research. I sit at my computer for a couple hours researching the product I want. Then I get it, and I know what to expect. I don't spend days and days running back and forth to the store trying to find the computer that works well for me. If I need to get some experience, I'll use it in the store and then go home and think about it.

Definite need to research. If BB has 1000 cases like yours, you can bet they'll change their return policy, and then where will the rest of us be?

just keep your mbp, the air will be lighter and thinner, but that's about it. You can add a 3rd party SSD and more ram if you need to. I have a mbp (see sig) and I wouldn't trade it for a mba.

i am the opposite of you. i hover around gadgets in stores and visit several times before i finally buy. it has nothing to do with being "careful," or anything like that. i cannot stand parting with my money, and even worse than that is when i buy something and regret it later. in other words, in order not to become frustrated after i buy, i spend the hours, days, and weeks before my purchase making myself miserable. literally. before i bought my mbp the other day, i didn't sleep more than six or seven hours across several days. i think my posts on macrumors at the time will prove this :)

I have to agree with you. I'm the same way. When I bought my MBP, I didn't even want to get a mac. My buddy left his at my house for a few days while he went out with his family, and after I got use to the gestures/Mac os, I barely even touched my HP. Shortly after that, I pulled some money out, then spent a good 3 weeks researching and finding out what exact model I wanted. I waffled between the MBA and the MBP for most of the time. Hell, when I ordered my 27" monitor, I had three different ones in the shopping cart for a week before I finally bit the bullet and finally got one.

I would rather know I get the right product the first time instead of buying something and not know if its what I need, does to much for my needs, etc.

Ok I should start off by saying I've always suffered buyer's remorse, for some unknown reason. I thought it was all over until yesterday, dammit. Here's the story.

I was completely happy with my 3yr old Lenovo notebook sporting a dual core processor, 120gb hd, and 1280x800 15.4" screen.

However, the family desktop was running really slow now, and old P4 1.6GHZ.

So, rather than replace the desktop, I had a selfish idea to hand the Lenovo down the family, and buy myself a new notebook. My family only does email, word processing and some music, photo printing, so my old notebook would do the trick. Off to Best Buy I go...

Not knowing anything about recent machines, I didn't know there were 2 generations of Intel processors out there. Anyhow, I was looking for something to replace my Lenovo at a great price, so I picked up an HP Pavillion for $699, and a sale included an xbox 360! What a deal!

This was machine #1: HP Pavillion w/640GB HD, Windows 7, a lousy AMD Phenom II processor, 15.4" screen, etc.

This machine was slower than my Lenovo. I blamed it on the processor, though I'm not sure if that was it. I also couldn't figure out how to enable Bluetooth. Decided I didn't like, and went back to Best Buy...

Machine #2: MacBook Pro 13", $1199 on sale. This is what I wanted in the first place, but was unwilling to fork out the cash for it. Took it home. Nice PC, huge learning curve to learn MAC OS. I'm a Windows guy for 20+ yrs. Find out that there's no driver's for my colour laser jet, or my photo printer. I fully expected everything to work with this MAC. Back to Best Buy... return lady looks at me funny, justifiably so.

Machine #3: Sony VAIO F1, Core i7, 500GB drive, fast dedicated graphics, 16.4" screen, Blueray, just a tank of a machine. $999. Take it home, spend a day loading all my junk on it. Runs good, but fan is insanely loud. I mean, this thing had a high pitch sound that got right in your ears. Back to to the store...

Machine #4: Sony VAIO E Series, Core i3, 500GB, 4GB Ram, 15.4" screen. $699. Ok I decided to cheap out a bit. I mean seriously, this isn't much more than an email machine for me, so why am I spending the money? (These are the insane thoughts going through my mind. What's funny, is the money is largely immaterial, it's more the time this is taking from me!) Unpack it, oh my god. These are the worst laptop speakers I've ever heard. I mean laptop speakers are generally bad, but these are really bad, like useless. Just on a whim, I check out the Sony website, and low and behold I finally learn the difference between a 1st gen core processor, and the 2nd gen. Sony was selling the second gen version of the laptop for only $30 more! Should be way faster right?

Machine #5: Family is upset now. How much time are you going to waste on this crap? Wife is shaking her head like I'm insane. I agree with her. Wait all day for the courier truck to deliver the 2nd gen Sony VAIO Core i3, 640GB HD, 6GB Ram, blah blah, $729. This is the machine I should have kept, it was fine for me. But oh, look at the build quality on this thing? Who put this together, a monkey? I had to snap the keyboard in place when I took it out of the box, brand new! Feeling like it's the wrong PC for me for some reason, call up Sony, get an RMA, and pay $20 to ship it back.

Machine #6: I promise to give everyone in the family $30 a piece if I return this machine, just to ease their concerns that I'll keep this machine. I buy again, the MacBook Pro 13", the second machine I already had. I decide I don't need to print on those old printers, and I buy a nice new shiny wireless laser printer just for the MAC. I'm seriously planning to keep it this time. 5 whole days go by with this machine, the others never lasted more than 1 or 2 days. Finally, I'm doing actual work on this machine. I load up some proprietary software for my work, and guess what, not MAC OS compatible. With some research and serious fiddling, I get it to work under MAC OS, but it's not great, missing some features. I could bootcamp this sucker, but why would I want to run Windows on this machine when I could run Windows on a far cheaper machine? That's right, I return the machine I already bought twice. I fork out $90 to my family for returning this machine.

Machine #7: HP Pavillion, I honestly can't remember the specs on this one after going through the other machines, but I believe it was $749. This was just ok, but wow, I learned that HP cheaped out on this particular model, and had a single channel wireless N chip on it. So it would only run at 2.4mhz, single channel. The port speed would top at 72mbps. I was getting 300mbps on all the other machines, save for the MAC I believe. I move a lot of files on the network!! What the heck is that??? Thankfully, I never promised my kids more money for making a switch.

Machine #8: HP Pavillion DM4. Core i3, 500GB, 6GB Ram, 14" screen, $699. None in stock, had to take an open box model for $660 or so. Take it home, wow, this is a nice PC for the money. It reminds me of the MACPro in a lot of ways, especially the keyboard. I'm loading my software on it, black screen of death and message that says "hard drive not present". WTF? What did the prior owner of this machine do, toss it off a balcony or something? It reboots fine, but a few hours later, I get the same error. I bring it back to Best Buy, and because it boots up at the counter, he doesn't believe me that there's something wrong with it. However, these guys are relentless at abiding by their return policies, and agree to take it back. I'm disappointed that he didn't believe that it was defective, as I know some other poor sap will be buying that machine open box. On the other hand, I can't blame him for not believing me considering my track record of returns.

Machine #9: Same machine as #8, but from a sealed box. Had to drive to the far side of town to a BB that had it in stock. For some reason, this one would disconnect from my router every hour or so. Not sure if it was my router or the pc or perhaps an incompatibility between the two, or perhaps it was defective, or perhaps I'm defective. Anyhow, it's gone. My family is hoping that BB won't take it back, and I find myself hoping as well, just to take me out of my PC exchanging misery.

Machine #10: MacBook Pro 13". That's right, bought it a 3rd time. This time I'm sure it's the machine for me. Work software incompatibilities, I'll deal with them. Such a nice machine, gorgeous aluminum, unequalled build quality, size is perfect, blah blah blah. Happy. Promise the kids $50 a piece if I switch this machine. Teenage daughter professes that I should just give her the money now.

Yesterday, bloody new MacBook Air is announced, it's got a backlit keyboard again, it's got a higher res screen, it's half the weight, it's got an SSD, it's so nice and sexy. I'm still in my return period for Best Buy! The Air is only $50 more!! I should go return this and immediately drive to the Apple store and get that Macbook Air 13".

Ahhhh screw it, I'm too tired. Kids lose out on $50 a piece.

Whoa! You got problems, dude! :)

I'm not as bad but I went:
HP ENVY15
13in MBP
Sony Y
HP Envy14
iMac
15in MBP
15in MBP Sandybridge

I don't work in retail, but I hate terrible return policies that some companies has and this consumer obviously is the exception that companies adopt bad policies... ick

I can completely relate to you. I have always felt buyers remorse even if I only bought a bar of chocolate, a pair of $20 jeans or a Macbook Pro. I got the 15" thinking I wanted it but than I got it and thought it was a little big. Thought about going back to the apple store to return it but that's a 6 hour drive and the entire family told me not to bother. I'm still not sure about the machine but oh well.

Swap? lol

i have buyers remorse over the 2011 i7 13" and wish i had the 15" now they've announced the possibility to daisy chain monitors
thought i wouldn't need the extra features but now wishing i sprung for the extra cash

other than wasting alot of his own time..
well ..."wasting time" is used by people who also tout "spend more time on research"... in a way he probably saved time by doing, experiencing, trying than reading contradicting opinions on the internet

sure, the compatibility issues could/should have been researched
but as for "ask a sales rep"
pffft. as if i would ever buy whatever the sales rep tells me
sure i take their advice into consideration
but it's never the deciding factor

a salesman wants to sell you what he has in stock
he does not know what is best for your personal situation
he may advise based on what you say
but it can be difficult to convey the importance of every little thing you think may be important in a relatively short conversation with a stranger on a shop floor.

also as for "knowing" about the air and the discontinuation of the white macbook
that info wasn't confirmed until it had happened.
not everyone reads rumour sites like this one
and other tech sites

many people, if they stumbled across a tech site that talked about such things
wouldnt understand or have any interest in its contents.
do I need an i5? or would an old core 2 duo meet my needs?
the ability to confidently answer that question requires keeping up with computer tech trends as a hobby.
which most people simply don't do.
because.. why would they?

I enjoyed the story :)

pffft. as if i would ever buy whatever the sales rep tells me

I don't know how things are over there in the U.S., but most salesmen I've dealt with are very helpful. It may have something to do with the way I talk to these "strangers", and I never implied that a salesman's advice is the 'deciding factor'. But, OP could have asked -- if printing is that important for him -- "does my Laserjet work with this?" At that point I would expect the sales rep to find some computer nearby and Google the answer in case he doesn't know. Besides, if the salesman did in fact say "Yes, it will" then returning the computer based on what the sales rep said, which was not factual information, is a legitimate / valid reason for a return. At least, a lot more legitimate than OP's adventures.

I have dealt with various different retail channels, many similar to Best Buy and if you know simple social skills you can get very far in the 'short conversation' with the salesman. But, not everyone is this advanced with social relationships, so again the other option is to just Google a bit at home or put up a thread and wait for the Internet's response on the matter...

I don't know exactly how I found this thread, WoW I haven't laughed like that in a while. Enjoyed it so much I Registered with MacRumors right away! I had to post, (which is not like me!!!, I'm more the quiet type)

Here are my 2 cents. PROBLEM 1. (He really didn't need the computer his family did.)
Quote OP
"So, rather than replace the desktop, I had a selfish idea to hand the Lenovo down the family, and buy myself a new notebook. My family only does email, word processing and some music, photo printing, so my old notebook would do the trick. Off to Best Buy I go...

This was machine #1: HP Pavillion w/640GB HD, Windows 7, a lousy AMD Phenom II processor, 15.4" screen, etc."

PROBLEM 2.
1.Excuse me sir what machine do you currently use?
2. What would you like to do with your new machine?
3. What programs do you currently use?

4. And to add insult to injury, after closing the OP on a machine, what better then to up sell the customer into a new printer or accessory including the useless extended warranty!! What peripherals do you currently own? we have a special on this one if your....are older then 5 years etc...blah blah..blah..... We need more of this!!!! and less circling like sharks!......................bunch of incompetent, anxious, commission hungry useless order takers!!

Poor service, With a few simple questions, any sales rep should ask.. : ( shame on BB for not training their employees to better serve!!

better service means higher wages on qualified staff, means $$$$$$$ but some times its costs ya more to pay less , like the OP realizes in this story.:p:p:p
PROBLEM 3.
His second purchase was the smartest move....:D once mac you cant go back!! The way I see it, its difficult to just jump from windows to mac after 20+ years! Been there! not nice. :)

Now for my final cent
PROBLEM 4. besides the OP clearly making fun of himself, and having a terrible time adjusting to a different OS, it's really sad seeing people's reactions. I found the Original post amusing, informative, hilarious, true without "sugarcoating".... I didn't realize so many posters here are rude and ruthless. Sounds like high school cafeteria crap!
CHILL THE **** OUT don't crap on someone....Who are you to judge???
People will think twice, cause some mac-sterbating freak may make fun of them!!
Huliodude rock on! RETURN THAT CRAP!! HALF THE TIME IM BRINGING MY CRAP BACK BECAUSE ITS NOT WORKING AND SEALED!! BB DOES NOT PAY ME HOURLY FOR THAT.

Reading this story, I was reminded of "THAT customer" who comes in takes 5 minutes to decide what to order (holding up the whole line), orders a sweet and sour chicken meal (chicken fingers with S+S on the side) and then complains that it's not Tso's when it comes out (again in front of a line of customers)..

Not quite the same, but there are some parallels.

For the record, when you eat at a dine in/fast food restaurant.

1) Take a menu and step away from the counter if you don't know what you want. This way those customers that do can actually order.

2) If you eat in and are served and tended to throughout, it is courteous to tip the waiter.

3) The floors are fed and watered regularly, they don't need your charity.

4) If you order, you damn well better not call back 20 minutes later and say "never mind, I got pizza." You're food is already made and now has to be thrown away.

5) You are not the only customer in the world. I cannot spend 20 minutes on the phone explaining every single item and how to order. If you've never ordered before and don't have a menu come in and get one.

Sorry the OP's story combined with the quoted text sparked a rant in me.

I want to make some points here as well. It does seem kinda nutty w/ the amount of returns but its his right so be it. One point I havn't seen come up that shocks me was at no point did BB management or at least a geeksquad employee sit down w/ the customer and help him make an informed purchase.

I used to work for BB in the geek squad as double agent (basicly supervisor for geeksquad) department putting my self though college. If I had seen this happening I would have had my top rep or my self if avail sit with this cust and find out whats going on. Why all the returns, ya know?

While its easy to say this guy is nuttier then a fruit cake, I see more of an impulse shopper whom isn't exactly as informed about computers as he could be. Sales rep are supposed to there to help people get what they need. Maybe I should of put "supposed", we all know most of the time it doesn't work out that way :p

Anyways just something I thought of .

I somewhat agree. Personally, I'm not a big spender or anything; I have a 2011 MBP and a few nice things here and there, but I have never, in my entire life, needed to take anything back.

Why? Because I read before hand. I read and read and constantly educate myself on whatever I amt thinking about purchasing and the myriad of other options that are also available as well.

It make sense to just educate yourself, make sure that that object is what you want, and then buy it.

If the proper work is done before hand, you "shouldn't" have any second thoughts as you have already gone through the motions of picking out the product that is right for you.

lol if money isn't an issue, and it doesn't seem like it is. did you ever think buy a copy of windows... and throw it on the mac? no compatibility issue then :)
