I hope to keep my iPhone 5 until the 7S - thats assuming it gets iOS 10, which means getting the 7S in late 2017 assuming that is how things work out. That means a 5 year cycle if I am correct.

My iPad 2 is on a long cycle as well. Planning to wait until late next year or 2017 (on the off chance it gets iOS 10).

My upgrade cycles are dependant on iOS support.

It was great on iOS6 but for some reason the i5 battery never liked iOS7 or 8.
Mine wasn't great on iOS 6 and neither was my father's - Whether it was to do with dodgy batteries or not I don't know, but both have been replaced, Dad's under iOS 6 and there was never any improvement sadly.

Could just be bad luck in my family though :p

My 6+ was intended to last me two years and there's no reason that it shouldn't have done. The screen is great, the battery life is great and the camera is good enough for my requirements. Sadly the phone has no RAM to speak of and the CPU/GPU can't handle scaling the super-high non-native screen resolution down to 1080p. I wish that I'd kept my i5 for another 12 months and waited for the 6S+.

Now I'm in two minds whether to give Apple more money just to get a correctly functioning version of the phone I currently have. It goes against the grain somewhat but I really don't know if I have it in me to last another year with my iStutterReload device.
Then what if the iPhone 7 has slimmed down bezels and no home button? I'd be all over that! It would mean three expensive smartphones in three years and I'm sorry Apple but I didn't previously upgrade yearly and I'm not about to get into that game now. SO, I'm going to wait for some proper user reviews of the 6S+ and decide if it's really worth dropping another wad of cash at Apple's door. What if the 6S+ is still gimped by scaling issues? Might the iPhone 7 finally address the phablet being a poor relation to the 4.7" version and not feel like an afterthought? I might just wait for the iPhone 7. It's 50/50 at the moment.

Or you could just stick to the "S" iteration. All new design and stuff gets much better/polished in the "S" iteration.

Wow...I've had more than 40 different smartphones in the past five years, so I do believe you are my exact opposite. Good luck...

I'm still using my 64gb iPhone 5 for three years now and I plan to use it another year. Maybe next year I might consider upgrading. One of the reasons I can't let go of this phone is because I got it signed by Wozniak shortly after getting it :)

My wife is only now thinking about upgrading her 4s... mainly, because she keeps running out of memory from taking so many pictures. She really could benefit from the better quality camera, though.

My iPad 3, on the other hand, is really sluggish now. I made the mistake of updating to iOS 8, and that killed it (if you're planning on keeping your device for awhile, I'd be very cautious about updating the iOS when it gets older). The keyboard itself has been painfully laggy with it taking seconds sometimes to register a key press. Fortunately, the iOS 9.1 beta has made that a bit better (though scrolling in every app is choppy) and I think I can get by until the next iPad Air update.

I envy people who have the willpower to hold out. I have a coworker who I convinced to preorder a 6s. He is coming from a 4. His entire phone is smaller then just my screen. I don't know how he does it.

Well folks, I think this will be my last iPhone for 3 years. I usually grab the new one every year since the 3GS (I miss that phone).

I was hoping it would have been the iPhone 6 Plus due to it's big screen (which I was waiting for), but the phone, for me, has been a nightmare and can't wait to be free of it.

Now that the 6S Plus has 2GB of RAM, it should go the full distance. I'm going to get AppleCare+ for it which covers me for the 2 out of the 3 years I plan to own it.

Sure future phones will have f/1.8-2.0 lenses. Sure it might gain bigger batteries. But as of now, I think phones have become good enough to go multi-year upgrades. Apple seems to support their phones for 3 years with OS upgrades. The 2GB RAM should keep things speedy.

Wish me luck!

life's too short for a 3 year upgrade-cycle

I've waited three years from the 5 to the 6s and I waited four to go from iPad 1 to iPad Air. Waiting isn't so bad, my iPhone 5 experience is still perfectly agreeable, though I'll admit that the first gen iPad was really suffering, I don't think I'll wait a four year cycle again :p

That said, it all depends on how good the next model is. I might well get a 7 if there's enough incentive, or wait till the 8. There's no sense setting limits that might prove impossible to resist breaking, just go with the flow; you have the money to upgrade and like the new model? Do it :)

I think I'll continue with 2 years upgrade and buy iPhone 7 next year. I really like my iPhone 6 but 3D touch is enticing me so I know next year I won't be able to resist and I'll wind up buying the new iPhone.
Your 6s+ should have no problems with iOS even in 2017 but performances aren't everything. Maybe they'll have new displays with iPhone 7 and you'll really want to upgrade just for that feature alone, maybe they'll introduce a new really cool feature with 7s, who know?

I used to be like that before the iPhone came along. I would swap my phone every 2-3 months because i'd always see one with newer features and nicer looks.

Since I got an iPhone I've honestly never seen a phone I've preferred over the one I have. The Galaxy S3 tempted me but no where near enough to make me want to buy it. The only phone I've been tempted by since the 5 is the following years 5s. And it was too similar to justify shelling out £500 for it.

Even now when I look at all the great android phones and their gigantic spec sheets I think 'Nope, prefer my iPhone'.

I would never upgrade for new features such as Touch ID, Apple Pay and a better camera. It's the RAM I want more than anything as it affects the general running of the phone.

i had a 4s between 2011 and 2015. if it wasn't for the damage and worn out battery i'd still have it.

The 4S was my absolute favorite. I don't like the design of the 6 much, unless it's out of it's case. I REALLY like the design of the Note 5. Samsung did a great job on that one (finally). I really hope Apple goes back to the 4-5S style and polish it up a bit more.

I'm an addict and each year have to buy new iPhone if one isn't released I go android for a few months.

The RAM is the ONLY reason I upgraded. The 6+ has been a nightmare for me and it's mostly due to lack of RAM: Random resprings, random reboots, random app crashes, music skipping when I'm processing photos in VSCOCam/Pixelmator, reloading Safari pages, and heaven forbid if I'm typing something, switch away from the app, then switch back only to find what I had written is gone thanks to the app reloading into memory. Could have been the disaster that as been iOS 8, but this doesn't happen on my iPad Air 2.

Plus the 6 Plus seems slow to me. Now with 2GB of RAM and iOS 9 supposedly focus on optimizing and in combo with Touch ID, 5.5 1080p screen, Apple Pay, 3D Touch - the 6S Plus should be perfect.

In the end I think I'll enjoy the iPhone even more instead of treating it like a disposable device.

I agree, the 6+ does seem slow. When I upgraded from the i4 to the i5 it absolutely flew. Going from the i5 to the 6+ just brought a raft of problems, plus it seems slower overall (compared to the i5 running iOS6). Sure it's faster in some respects but in others it seems to crawl. It's just a crap phone but jazzed up with a nice screen and decent battery life.

I've had my iPhone 5 for three years now, it's still perfectly fine and I could easily go at least another year with it but I'm upgrading to the 6S as a treat :D

Same for me ! My iphone 5 is still doing well and I've not seen any slowdown for what I do. The battery do not last as long as it used to but the difference is not huge.

Of course it depends on what you do with your phone

Yeah, the iPhone 5's battery life was fine before iOS7. Even many tech websites showed that its battery life was severely affected with the move to iOS7.

You can do it. :) Like some others, I plan to upgrade to the 6s from the 4S, which I've had since new on October 2011. With the 6s getting 2GB RAM, I think it's future-proof enough to last at least four more years.

I think phones are getting like computers: the changes are incremental enough not to warrant an upgrade for a good while, at least to me.
