This happened to me with my first RAZR, which fried itself and burned my hand. It was still in warranty so it went back to Motorola UK. I was looking forward to getting a new one, then they rang and said, sorry, we scanned it, you got water in it and that's why it happened. They even said if I wanted it back I'd have to pay £11 shipping

I was never aware of getting it wet, so I don't know if they were lying or what. Never did get a new one.

Run into your nearest Apple Store, then right in the middle around as many people as possible, hold your iPhone 3G above your head and drop your pants shouting "it burnt me, it burnt me"

That should get you suitable attention lol

Hope you get it sorted!!

Even if... The nearest is 200+ miles away

I cannot wait to hear the results

Go to a doctor ASAP and have it documented because Apple deserves the hassle for selling us such trash!

Yeah I agree document everything...people have won much more for much less in lawsuits so apple should want to settle this immediately (remember the hot coffee lawsuit? that was something people knew was hot!!).

I bet if you push you could get the entire 2 years of service paid for...

maybe its just me, but i would be filing a lawsuit. just imagine if you didnt wake up. They owe you at least a couple grand for your pain and suffering. I suggest you rub your leg alot and make it worse. jk

I had the same issue with my 1st Gen iPhone. I was listening to music while I was falling asleep. I rolled over at some point, my arm hit the phone, and I JUMPED out of bed. It was scalding hot; left a noticeable mark too. Called Apple and they replaced it immediately.

Don't do anything dishonest, that wont get you anywhere, but you should

1) Go to your doctor immediately and have it checked out and documented.
2) Stop using the iPhone and take it to the Genius Bar immediately.

I think it is high time for Americans and Europeans to stand up and say we are no longer going to accept this defective Wall-Mart style CRAP that is created in China. I have had 2 products in the last 3 months with explooding batteries, one of which sprayed the electrolyte on my child. Luckily we were able to nutralize the acid before more problems.

We are in an era where every big company is trying to make their products cheaper and cheaper, so they go to China. China manufacturing=FAIL. Every stinkin LiIon battery in the explooding battery problems of the past year is made in ...wait for it...China (ding ding ding). If they cant even be bothered to make their schools and buildings up to spec to not kill their own people, then how in the heck can we expect them to give a crap about us, the Capitalistic society (Their mortal enimy's). I miss the days of products coming out of HK. While there are ties to China, things were such better quality then.

You need to burn Apple on this. They owe you. What if you get cancer later on because of cell damage that you dont see now. It can happen. Send Apple the message that we do not accept their non-QA, QC crap. And for the love of God, at least have them replace your iPhone with a new one out of the box and not a replacement, refurb stock unit in a white box. I think that is the least they could do. Of course they are not going to care, so the suggestion to run in without an appointment and drop trou and scream may have more of an effect, or may provide more comedy for us here in the forums. If you decide to do that, please have a friend video tape it, as this would be really funny.

its true we buy apple to get quality products not some half aced garbage thrown together by little kids

You should send your pictures to Engadget.com and other websites to spread the issue.

We should stop supporting Apple till they show some respect to us.

If Apple wanna go cheap, then they should move to Malaysia instead of China. It is cheap, but yet provides quality control that is way better than China.

The iPhone is really a small computer and as such needs to dissipate heat.

Was there an app running while you had it your pocket? Something that would keep the CPU utilization up?

How long were you asleep?

Perhaps we can recreate the conditions with another 3G iPhone and see if all the 3G iPhones are prone to this type of overheating when placed running in a confined space with no ventilation.

If you set auto-lock to NEVER then that would explain why it got so hot.
No it doesn't explain why it would get so hot it would burn or melt the plastic. It might get warm, but not THAT hot. Do you honestly think they would put out a product that if you turned off the auto-lock it would melt and burn you?

I really don't want to form a lawsuit, I just want a replacement, the burn isn't severe, maybe like a sunburn...

also, auto lock was set to 1 minute, the phone wasn't jailbroken, and yeah,

it was a wake up "call"...

This is not a defect people, one of the new features with 2.0, a very effective alarm. Much like plastic backs aren't to save money, no sir, better reception, and hey, if we do save a few bucks too...

And as someone with a law degree he paid dearly for and never used, outside of free, silly forum advice, :) to sue for negligence, you have to show, and you only get $ for actual damages, a minor leg burn isn't worth anything, unless it leaves a bad scar, somewhere people can see it, like on your forehead. :) Id say if you had an Iphone shaped, apple logo embossed burn on your forehead, you might just have a case there... :) Then again, Apple might simply pay you for the advertising space.

What if you get cancer later on because of cell damage that you dont see now. It can happen.

Epidemiological studies do not support a causal relationship between burns and skin cancer (e.g. Lindelof, B., B. Krynitz, et al. (2008). "Burn injuries and skin cancer: a population-based cohort study." Acta dermato-venereologica 88(1): 20-2.).
