First, the legality varies amongst jurisdictions.

Second, it is one thing to let OP know how you feel about texting while driving; it is another to attack the OP, especially while not fully understanding any applicable underlying details.

Third, as clearly indicated by a poster who has decided to continue his normal routine, the criticism may not change any behavior at all.

First, the stupidity, and general dumbassness of texting whilst driving doesn't vary much amongst jurisdictions. There are times when it might be less risky, but it in of itself rises the risk of an accident. It's like why a 10 and 2 hand grip is recommended - it allows you to very quickly make corrective action if something crosses the car's path. Having one hand texting means you can't as quickly take such moves, and you are distracted and not giving driving your full attention.

e.g. Drinking a hot cup of coffee whilst driving is a potential hazard/danger. Doing it in the fast lane is more dangerous generally. Doing it in a slow moving traffic jam less so (but you could still jump the clutch and ding the car in front for example).

You don't need to know too many details. That won't rub with Mr Police Constable: "sorry officer, but you can't charge me with driving with undue care and attention, as you don't fully understand the applicable underlying details"...

It would affect insurance and liability in case of an accident amongst other things.

But don't get me wrong, maybe the OP needs a Digital Lifestyle Outfitters' VentMount, a new dashboard mounting case for the iPhone and iPod touch. That'd help typing ;)

Legal on MR? There's no such thing. Allowed on MR? You'd have to ask a mod.

Thank you for correcting my verbage.

Personally, I think people's comments here aren't threatening harm, they're just saying that when the person's reckless actions that he admitted he does inevitably leads to him having an accident they hope that he learns his lessons and doesn't hurt anyone else in the process. All any of us want here is to do what we can to prevent a person from doing something illegal that has a very high risk of seriously hurting or even killing an innocent bystander. How could that be against the forum rules?

Well hey there Smoochy just remember, "You can't change the world, but you can make a dent." ;)

Yeah well I dont drink and drive either so...Also dont really see how this makes me an idiot. 6 years and no texting related driving accidents. *knock on wood*.
But anyway, OP I saw a screen cover somewhere that had a layout for the keypad so you could actually feel each individual key on the keyboard. Maybe this could help you?

I personally knew someone who died in a car accident because she was texting on the phone. Texting while driving and drinking and driving is no different .. the key factor is lack of concentration.

Please don't knock on wood anymore and counting on your luck.. stop texting and driving. You'll hurt yourself, and worse hurt someone else who will not be at fault.

I love my iPhone to death, but this dang keyboard is killing me! I know I'm not suppose to txt and drive, but sometimes ya do what ya got ta do. Driving and txting with the iPhone is especially risky!

My hope is some third party will come out with a T9 plugin or some other innovative way to enter text. Something with a larger "hit" area for the letters.

Anyone else feel my pain?

Just seen this in the paper, this could be you!!!!!!!!!!

A RANDY trucker who killed a tractor driver while sending X-rated sex
texts from behind the wheel was jailed for six years yesterday

Scott Baldwin, 42, from Exeter, claimed he had been day-dreaming when
he ran into the back of Ian Gregory’s trailer.

But Judge Graham Cottle told Exeter Crown Court: “The defendant
wasn’t looking at the road or where he was going.”

WOW such venom!

You mean to tell me that most of your folks have NEVER used your iPhone while driving....RIGHT.... No phone calls made or received... No text messages made or received......

Not saying you should on a regular basis, but sometimes you have to take care of business whether you are driving or not. When that happens technology is suppose to help make things easier, not harder. That's my whole point.

Maybe it's just me and a few other poor souls who actually have to COMMUNICATE with people while driving.

Some of you folks are too funny!

There's a huge difference between talking and texting while driving. It's kinda like the difference between drinking Coke and drinking Budweiser while driving.

If you have to "take care of business" while driving, you really need to whoop your own arse and realize that not killing someone is more important than taking care of business. If you don't have the cajones to let someone know you were doing something more important at the time, it's your own darn fault. When you smash into some car and kill a couple of parents, YOU can go explain to the kids what business was THAT important.

In tomorrow's drive time report, we explore why sometimes you just shouldn't eat a prime rib while driving to the airport.

Yeah well I personally knew someone who died from speeding. but how many people do that on here? Im sure NOBODY speeds either. Ill be sure to post tm when im DRIVING to WVU.
Get over it

You grouping me into your own self-made demographic of "people who text while driving" speaks volumes more about you than me saying, "text and driving is ok". You should not make assumptions towards people based on a single statement or belief (a lesson you should carry with you not only on MR, but in life as well).

Oh and maybe you're right maybe I'm not that high up the "moral ladder" maybe I am actually at the very bottom of that ladder holding it steady for you and your mighty climb towards the top, but be careful friend, lest I release my grip on it... ;)

I deducted that you were defending his actions.

If you were then I stand by my comments. If that is not the case then I apologise without reservation.

Ffs!!!

Sheesh!!

Give the guy a break - I'm sure he knows it's wrong to be sending/writing a text whilst driving and how dangerous it potentially is!!

And yeah, I already know someone will come back with a "you won't be quite so forgiving when it's your family he wipes out!!"

Morales aside on this one; let's be honest with ourselves here and actually 'fess-up that not one of us has not broken the law at some stage... And if that statement isn't true for at least one unfortunate individual, then very good indeed you've earned your wings - woopey-doo!!

Yeah; I've text using my iPhone whilst driving - I know it's wrong and admittedly I realised just how dangerous it really is... Put it this way, I did it the one and only the once - it was much easier to do so with my old Nokia's...

Moving on and skip to the end...!!!

This reminds me of when a guy at work phoned another colleague who rejected the call and then sent a text message saying "Can't answer the phone as i'm driving" - Idiot! :)

Oh and if you think it's ok to text and drive:

Idiot 1

Idiot 2

Idiot 3

Maybe the OP will become Idiot 4 for us in due course.

Tool!

Get over it

Died from speeding? There is a big difference there in the people who may drive 100mph down the highway, and those who drive 75mph (5mph over in most areas). Without disrespecting your friend's death, I doubt that driving just a little over the speed limit was the deciding factor in whatever accident happened. An accident involving not paying attention on the road can happen at no matter what speed.

A friend of mine has now crashed 3 cars because of her innate ability to concentrate on anything but the road. The only time I've ridden with her, she pulled out the phone to text while she was driving me home. After about the third text, I said "you are not really going to keep this up are you?". She agreed to stop, thankfully. The conversation was not "taking care of business", it was about something completely stupid and useless like what was for dinner.

I would have to imagine that most of the people texting while driving are not actually "taking care of business". Do people really do business by txt? omg.

an accident waiting to happen

Texting while driving is insane. Worse yet, it's a lethal threat to the rest of us on the road. You sound like you're very young; if you live long enough, you'll probably wonder how you made it.

Bone up on 'depraved indifference'. You might need to know something about that concept, sooner or later.

This guy realy did hit some nerves herr. I've done it in the past once with a standard Nokia and I have to tell you it is one of tye most difficult things to do while driving. It felt like splitting my brain in two to give voth task enougu attention. Once but not again. It was btw in an era when phone werent forbidden on the road, it was with an ancient Nokia 3310 which has one of the best txting keyboards ever an trying this on an iPhone calls for a moronic brain in the first place.

But I rrally like all the comments on this post. Pitty it isnt april 1st :D

You don't have to be driving to reallize that the iPhone's keyboard is kind of archaic. Just using it while sitting at a coffee shop is terrible. There are plenty of far better keyboards on other touch phones, and hopefully we DO see the option for a widescreen or XT9 keyboard with the SDK.

And yes, driving and texting on any phone will result in someone's death.
