WOW such venom!

You mean to tell me that most of your folks have NEVER used your iPhone while driving....RIGHT.... No phone calls made or received... No text messages made or received......

Not saying you should on a regular basis, but sometimes you have to take care of business whether you are driving or not. When that happens technology is suppose to help make things easier, not harder. That's my whole point.

Maybe it's just me and a few other poor souls who actually have to COMMUNICATE with people while driving.

Some of you folks are too funny!

There is a HUGE difference between making/taking a phone call from a BT enabled hands-free phone using voice activation while driving and sending a text while driving, you can't even compare the two.

Last weekend the family and I were on our way back from my brother/sister-in-law's and we saw the person in front of us weaving pretty erratically. We figured that it was texting, and sure enough, when we pulled up next to her at the light, this twenty-something was texting away on her phone.

About a year ago, one of the local suburbs lost 3 high school girls. They were heading out to use the family cabin on a local lake, and the driver was texting. They veered into the other lane, slammed into a semi and the SUV, immediately exploded into a ball of flames.

3 families are now forever scarred, just because one girl couldn't wait an hour to get to her destination before texting. And what if it hadn't been a semi, but a minivan, carrying your family on the way back from the grocery store? More often than not, these accidents are not only involving the offending vehicle.

I've been a Mustang guy for many years and lambaste people for talking about street racing. Of course they use the same logic you do "well, you own a Mustang, you must race it"...Sure I did race my Mustang, AT THE TRACK!

If you think that you may be receiving a SMS that you can't ignore, simply pull to the side of the road. It's that simple. Either that, or wait until you get to your destination. Most people probably don't drive more than 30-60 minutes at a time unless on a long trip, and what can't wait 30-60 minutes?

Get a hands-free headset and take calls. Do not text while driving. It's exceedingly dangerous, tactile keypad or no. Your attention is significantly reduced just by trying to talk to someone while operating a vehicle. If someone texts you and it's actually important, call them back. Less interaction with the phone and then you can be hands-free.

As more and more states adopt "hands-free or it's illegal" legislation, I hope this "texting while driving" thing gets nipped in the bud.

About the only time I could see texting while behind the wheel is if you were in STOPPED traffic.

I love my iPhone to death, but this dang keyboard is killing me! I know I'm not suppose to txt and drive, but sometimes ya do what ya got ta do. Driving and txting with the iPhone is especially risky!

My hope is some third party will come out with a T9 plugin or some other innovative way to enter text. Something with a larger "hit" area for the letters.

Anyone else feel my pain?

You are not supposed to txt and drive according to the law. Doing that can end you in the hospital, killing someone, or even a nice hefty, big and juicy ticket.

I don't know about you, but I'd rather keep myself from killing someone or ending up hospitalized, but hey! that's just my opinion.

Its honestly not that hard to text and drive IMO. But to each his own I guess. Don't really see the point in bashing ppl for doing it, none of you are going to change my mind. Have a great day:)

Get a handsfree kit if you absolutely have to talk to someone whilst driving.

Nope. Only your stupidity at endangering your life and others.
Maybe you will literally "love your iPhone to death". I hope not, and that you drive more safely in the future.

I don't have an iphone (yet... come on June...), but on my current phone (pos razr) it has an option to insert quick notes as text messages. In other words, there is a list of short things like "...running late" "parking" "call you soon" etc, so you don't actually have to type out a text message. Is there something like this on the iphone that you could use?

making calls is one thing

texting is another.

i can't believe you're telling us that too. just think if you get in an accident and hurt someone because you're boyfriend needed to know where you were at

And yeah, i text a lot. Around 5,000 a month. If im in my car at a light then it's alright, but i have never once used my phone when i was driving.

This is the saddest thing that I've read in a long time. :(

Totally agree...Reminds me of Drunk Drivers that have been caught multiple times, loose their license, Get Drunk again and kill a family or cop and walk away from it.

fills me with disgust that there are those who have no consideration of others.

ditto all of this.

i'm always stunned when i encounter someone who places their own convenience above the safety of others around them. although i do not hope that an innocent person gets hurt, i do wish that these stubborn and inconsiderate people learn their lesson in a drastic way.

ebay and iphonewiz: i hope you don't hurt anyone else while texting and driving, but i won't shed one tear if you hurt yourselves...

(and i've never texted while driving in the many years i've had a cell phone and i only use my phones for calls using a built-in bluetooth handsfree system in my car.)

It won't be an issue after you are killed in a car accident. I just hope you don't hurt or take anyone with you in the process.

Ass!

Same response to you as the other guy: I hope you don't take anyone else with you when you kill yourself.

Did you have to take lessons to become that brain nummingly stupid? I ask because I'm sure a glass of water has more common sense than you.

I think you and the other guy should car share. That way you may both get taken out cleanly in the same accident (again; fingers crossed no one else will be involved).

I feel your pain. I'm currently replying to this post via iPhone while driving, drinking, smoking, and beating my kids. I love my iphone too, but text/driving is difficult.

How about getting a driver?

If you're driving on an empty road where everything is 100% predictable, then you're probably right. But no driving conditions are 100% predictable. If you're texting, your attention is not on the road. At best, your attention is divided. And when something unforeseen occurs, your reaction speed is drastically reduced, and what would have otherwise been easily avoidable becomes a collision.

A couple weeks ago, someone cut me off while we were driving down the highway, and I had to take evasive maneuvers to not him him. As it was, I only barely made it. If I'd been texting, I would have hit him. At 65 miles an hour on a crowded highway.

Can you honestly say that no one has ever cut you off, veered into your lane, or stopped suddenly in front of you? Have you never driven on a windy day, or on snowy roads, or in the rain? Can you guarantee that everyone on the highway with you is a safe driver, and that you will absolutely never have to drive defensively?

Don't really see the point in bashing ppl for doing it, none of you are going to change my mind.
We're "bashing" people because they're doing something stupid that could get them or someone else killed or injured. The exact same reason why we "bash" people who drive while drunk.

I actually think it's a good thing that it's so hard to even dial a phone number, let alone text, on the iPhone while driving. You shouldn't be doing it; you're endangering yourself and others. I don't text while driving; I only receive calls. You may think you're a skilled enough drive to multi-task like that, but nothing's ever that predictable. If anything happens, I hope it's all on you and the hapless victims emerge unscathed.

Back to the original focus. Due to the lack of feedback it is impossible to text on the iPhone without looking at the screen. My Treo allowed me to feel the characters and actually text quite quickly, blindly.

I love the keyboard, I can text really fast on it, especially if I use both hands.
