I posted this before, but apparently I have to post it again. If you can't use your glossy screen unless it's dark it's because your brain/eyes isn't functioning as it should. Our brain/eyes are capable of focusing on different layers, if we want to watch at what the computer is displaying instead of our reflection it is just a matter of telling the brain not to focus on the reflection and instead focus on what the screen is actually showing. I do this all the time and I have no problem using my computer with direct sunlight coming from behind me, sure I gotta turn up the brightness for those situations, but then I just put the focus on the plane that shows the screen and I do not even see the reflections.

The human brain is made to be able to focus the eyes on different things, it does that all the time when you look at things, so why not just use something that is "built in" in our bodies?

The eyes/brain are able to focus on different layers IF the layers are at sufficiently different distances, but the reflective glass screen and actual display on the MBP's are practically at the same distance, i.e. a fraction of an inch apart while altogether 20-30 inches away from your eyes.

Now maybe you're some alien with orders of magnitude lower retinal sensitivity and larger pupil/aperture, allowing you to indeed distinguish the two, but for us normal humans the reflection on the glassy MBPs is in the same plane as the LCD.
 
Anybody notice how the OP hasn't come back yet? Also he promised to take pics of the screen once he gets his charger back for his iPhone, knowing that it doesn't require a charger to charge the iPhone. All he has to do is plug the iPhone into his Mac to charge it. I call this whole thing a falsehood, unless the OP proves otherwise I think this thread should be closed.

You my friend have not gone to high school I see ;) So let's take the most basic physics in the field of optics.

If you look in a mirror, where do your brain think the image of you is? Exactly, the same length behind the mirror as you are in front of it (for a normal flat mirror). Sure the mirror projects your image, but you do not think your image is on the mirror.

If you are standing 1.5 meters from the mirror you will see your image as if you were standing 3 meters from that image. The same goes for the screen. Your reflection is reflected in the glass, correct, but the image will appear to be behind the screen, a distance of the same distance from your eyes to the screen.

The screen on the other hand is just a flat screen, it is stationary, even though it can make things look like 3d with optical illusions and things may appear to be closer or further away from you, but it is all sent to your eyes from the same point.

are we really sitting around this forum debating on the capablities of the human brain. talking about the ocular function of the retinal nerve as it pertains to deciphering multi layer images.

listening to this, you would think we were M.D.'s working on a very complex problem for a patient.

but no!!!!!!!!!! were are arguing if a glossy screen is better than a matte screen.

C'mon in the whole sum of the universe does it really matter? if you like glossy get glossy. if you like matte, get matte. if you dont like either, then read a book i dont know. Just please, please, put this whole thing to REST!!!!

All I am saying is that it is incorrect to say that glossy screens are useless in sunlight, you are actually capable of not seeing the reflection. Then if people prefer Matte anyway they can do so, but I do not like people stating their opinions as facts that are incorrect.

And im not an M.D. I've only taken a years worth of biotech with physics in college, so im far from medically skilled.

i agree that it is far from useless, i also agree about people posting their opinions as fact (as i stated in an earlier post)

i think if you take a min and think about it, you will find it pretty funny too...

Yeah it is quite funny, but it is normal for me to go to a more strange discussion to support my opinion. :p If you want we can start discussion how economics support the glossy choice due to the fact that it would be able to act as a mirror with the screen off! ;)

This is a quick post but I agree with you 100%. In fact, I'm using my glossy screen right now with a window right behind me. When I make a conscious effort to 'look further' i see the reflections and not the screen. When I focus up close, all I see is the screen.

Here's a quick way to do a home experiment.

I do this eye exercise all the time to use the eye muscles. Hold up a finger in front of a tree in the distance. First look at the finger only, then look at the tree in the distance BEHIND the finger. I guarantee you will physically feel the muscle exert itself. Days when I'm on the computer a long time, it is harder to look beyond.

Now, do the same thing with the glossy screen that has a lot of reflection. Hold up the finger right in front of the screen. Look at the finger, you'll see the screen. Look beyond (like looking at the tree try and replicate the muscle movement) and you will see only the reflection.

To each one his own. You like glossy, buy it. If you don't, get the matte. No need to argue or convince each other. But I just wanted to take a second and agree with David ..

Apple has done much research into glossy screens. Countless usability tests and polls. I've used them myself and find it to be very pleasant to the eye. Reflections are easily ignored by my eyes, but if I concentrate I can see the reflections.

Good thing someone else also realized how to do it. And I agree ppl should get what they want. I just dislike some people trying to making their own opinion seem better because of incorrect facts.
