My MAGSAFE caught fire too :(

Could it be that the magsafe gets dirty and hence shorts when connected ? or that the end of the magsafe isnt that 'safe' from being twisted/frayed and finally short circuiting ?

I am going to be careful with my magsafe now, usually the uMB is on a wooden table, because it has SSDs and hence runs quite cool most of the time.

But man ... those pics hurt :(

The bending and twisting is the issue as I recall.

I hope you guys remove the MagSafe plug using the hard plastic only, and not by pulling on the cord. I put my finger under the hard plastic, and rotate the plug up so that it disconnects from the port. This puts no stress on the wires.

I bought 2 adapters. One stays on the desk at home and the other goes in a briefcase - which I rarely use.

Although I bought 2 mainly for convenience... this seems to minimize the handling of the adapters in general.

+1. I always do. If I ever end up tripping on it accidentally or otherwise giving it a very hard jerk, it's going in the trash and I'm off to Best Buy for a new one.

If this does end up happening to me, I'm bringing it in to the Apple store immediately and going to try for a replacement 17" MBP (hey it costs less than what I paid for my 15") :D

Why would they give you an upgrade? They will replace your machine for sure, but not upgrade it.

...he took photos and asked if i minded if anyone came to my house.

so im not sure...it torched my desk...about a 2 inch spot. dident realize it happened i was not near it...but i smelled it quite quickly...now when i get home i gotta get them pics of the desk.

:|
My answer would be yes. Why do they need to come to your house? Are they going to test the voltage of your outlets or something?

Magsafe caught fire under normal use ... burned notebook ... that's pretty much all anyone needs to know.

And while it's not a widespread problem, it is a problem. One that requires and commands the attention that only a flaming magsafe should command.

If they gave you an upgrade than everyone would be taking a blow torch to their MBP to get a new UPGRADE laptop. I saw "refurb."

First of all don't think for a second this is a widespread problem. People get in car accidents daily, but are you afraid to drive? Don't let this scare you, its not happening to any sized percentage of users.

I wonder if you would feel the same way if that happened to you?

IM amazed Apple designs the best computers and yet engineer this crappy wall wart! How many other wall warts out there, for different products that we own, do this?

This has gone on long enough and contrary to the post I quoted I would be real concerned for those users that leave their lap top on the AC adapter when away from it! This just is not good!

What will it take for Apple to fix this? A House Fire and a major Lawsuit not to mention perhaps people dying?

I have been reading about these issues since I converted to Apple over 3 years ago and I and many others here have seen many pics of this hazard!

You my say it's not common and for the most part I would agree % wise but you have to admit many posts here over the years have shown this to be a Serious issue.

Apple FIX this!!!!! :mad::rolleyes::eek:

I would pack it all back into the original box, walk into an Apple Store and ask for a Manager. Trust me, he or she will want this to be taken care of very quietly. I would ask for an upgrade, an iPod/iTouch and make sure my renters insurance is current.

if i had an apple store i would....all i have a burnt up magsafe connector and faith in something that tried to burn my house down.

i was complaining about how its not a big issue....

snap crackle pop....my magsafe went up

Oh Jesus!!
That's damn bloody scary!!!:mad::mad::mad:

I guess you can be thankful it didn't happen while it's plugged in and everyone was sleeping!

I wonder when Apple will do something about it?
Perhaps when Apple's dodgy "B rated" 'MagSafe' power lead takes out an entire family? Seriously... that's dangerous. And to think I keep mine plugged in most nights... I don't think I wanna leave mine plugged in anymore thanks.

Right? Who's gonna sue the almighty Apple?

There's been quite a few stories like this in the past few months, Apple really needs to get it's act together regarding their MagSafe adapters.

I'd call up good ol' AppleCare as soon as you can and explain the issue, hopefully they'll send you out a new MB and MagSafe adapter. Unless you got to travel up to a store that is.

I have a White MacBook, just hope that doesn't happen to me! (I've owned it over a year though, so I think it's fine).

Definitely push and try to see if they give you an upgrade to a 17", or at least a newer model 15". If you b**** enough you can get anything, I've had friends who have managed to get their old MBP's swapped out for brand new unibodies due to different reasons.

Companies would much rather give you a replacement product/upgrade rather than dealing with the hassle of a possible lawsuit. Before anyone starts suggesting that this isn't a big deal and can happen to any electronics, you're wrong. I've owned 4 laptops over the past several years and NONE of them had their ac adapter burst into flames. Shut up.

Good thing it was just the adapter that burned and not anything else on the desk(papers, etc. which could've started a larger fire). Get yourself something free from Apple. Please update us.
