One of my ex-girlfriend's fathers was a gun nut, he'd contracted lead poisoning so bad that he couldn't make bullets any more - so he trained my ex up to take over when she was eight.

(And that's in the UK)

Yea, I was pretty thankful too. Actually, my dad did do the gun cleaning trick on every gun that my sisters ever brought to the house. Pretty funny stuff.
One of father's of a girl that I dated in HS did this to me.

He showed me a wonderful double barrel shotgun.

Needless to say, I got her home on time! ;)

Pretty dumb, 'cause lead poisoning is worse for women than men.

In the old Rolls-Royce factory they used hot lead to smooth over the welded joint to give a better finish, used about 60lbs of lead per car, and all over the factory where this work was carried out they had blue lines painted on the floor. Females weren't allowed to cross those lines. I went on a tour of the factory and there was one girl in our engineering class who had to spend that part of the tour 6foot behind the rest of the class.

EDIT: The lead is absorbed into the body and effects the reproductive system and any babies in the future. I believe this is the case particularly with the vapour from molten lead.

Nice M9...I shoot my friend's Taurus PT99AF and I like it, but right now I own only milsurp long arms - Mausers Mosin-Nagants, Enfields etc.

My next firearm will either be a Garand or a Colt 1911A1...I really can't choose though. I'd like to get an AR15 as well, but I'm considering building one from a Rock River reciever or something instead of buying a "whole" rifle.

personally, i'd go with getting the reciever and assembling it yourself (if you're competent a gunsmith). I didn't even consider that option when i started on my rifle. Basically, now i almost have 2 complete sets of rifles (im short a lower reciever and a few misc parts). I would have saved so much money if i could've done it myself back then.

I love 1911's I really do, I just hate having to field strip one :)
M1911A1, great pistol. Fired it many times. Durable. Doesn't jam much. Heavy bullet.

Yes, it can be a bitch to field strip for sure. Easy to pinch you fingers until you figure out the secret way not to.

Oh, it is a great weapon. I love it, I just hate to clean it. Especially compared to a Beretta.

Congrats on your purchases.

Lucky we live in the southern US, where it's not considered freakish to have a gun or two. Or three. Or...

Not that I own any firearms myself, but... if I did, I'd prolly be looking at getting a Kimber. Agreed the 1911s are a pain to field strip (especially compared to the Beretta), but to me the thumb safety is more intuitive, yet seems like it might be harder for unfamiliar hands to figure out. ('Course, if I did have a pistol, I'd also have something like a http://www.gunvault.com/ .)

I wouldn't get a Kimber Raptor, though, I read a gun safety/self defense book once by Ayoob which recommended not buying anything called a "Python", etc. If you ever had to defend your actions in court, the prosecution could have a field day with an intimidating-sounding weapon and insinuations regarding your intentions.

And always take care handling your tools. Even law enforcement personnel have been known to have "accidental discharges" (I mean from a gun). Doesn't happen often, but it does happen.

Be careful out there.
