i had already posted a reply, but apparently with mac I am back to square zero, i dont even know how to to the basics

I was saying that with Preview, I have to see one pic at the time, while with Windows you can browse the entire pic collection within a folder

Other example: i just downloaded Real Player to listen my usual webradio streaming. I cant install it! i have the RealPlayer.dmg file, i click on it, a new window pops up like the one attached, then NOTHING, i still cant listen the radio
after 30 years of using computers I cant even install real player.
very sleek, very beautiful, but plz dont say it s intuitive and easy

The slideshow functionality is kind of hidden now which is annoying for new users. If you select all the images and open them in preview at the same time you can then access the slideshow option from the view menu.

A faster way is to select all the images in the folder (command a) and then right click on one of the images. If you then hold down the option key there will be an option to "slideshow x items". How you are meant to find that if you have never used os x before? I don't know!

As for the Real Player you are opening a disk image containing the application, converter (whatever that is) and a link to your applications folder. Drag and drop the Real Player icon into your applications folder and try running it from the applications folder.

Hopefully some of that was helpful :)

When you see that window- all you need to do is use your mouse pointer, click and hold the app you're installing in the box (that would be the Real Player icon) and virtually move it into the the Application folder. And that's all you need to do.

With Apps bought or acquired from the App Store, this step isn't required.

About six years ago, I made my move from Windows to OS X. It' daunting and confusing at first. All you need to do is to slow down and spend a lot of time doing thing like installing software. Moving files around. Just simple process of familiarity.

Another thing I would suggest is to peel yourself from all the bad habits you might have formed from using Windows. Like installing Real Player :)

Check out sites that are Apple-centric: Macworld etc. With Mac, it's usually best to experience the hardware using software that are developed by people who truly understands OS X. For example, instead of using Words, look into using Markdown apps like Ulysses III, Byword or iA Writer. Try using the native applications- Calendar, Reminder, Mail. Try not to bloat the system with too many apps that you don't use. And enjoy the new experience.

There is an arrow for a reason, just drag and drop the App on the Application Folder, it will copy the App.(To the App Folder)
For Radio, use iTunes, plenty of stations there and you can add other stations.

As for seeing pictures, hit the spaceBar when on (any) file, it will show a preview, you can do this with many files, PDF,songs, pictures, if you have a folder with lets say 10 pictures, click on the first, hit SpaceBar and then arrow up or down to move from one to the other, now, try that on Windows!
Believe me, OS X is much better but YOU have to adapt, open your mind, within a week or weeks you won't go back.

Good Post, especially the bolded part.

thanks everyone
i did install realplayer at the end
but apparently cant make it run on Chrome, but it works on its own or with Safari. I did all the chrome//plugins enable, but nothing

as far as the preview software for pics. SOrry but I dont see how selecting the all first, or HOLDING space and arrow it's better than just opening one and then go left or right, like in the most basic Windows viewer.
I dont think I am after something crazy: just open a pic, then browse them all, w/o hitting special secret keys combinations, or holding something down with my elbow and press something else with my foot at the same time :)

my main point is that all this doesnt look intuitive as they make you think at first. I understand i have WIn mindset, but you must admit you know have Mac mindset, which has it's own rule. "Intuitive" for me it's something else

----------

and btw, the space + arrow keys for me works only when the window where I see the pic is small. If I make it bigger using the green button on the left, it doesnt work anymore

Both operating systems have their quirks.

You can also try the 'cover flow' view in finder if you just want to preview your images. You can make it quite large and scroll through using the arrow keys. Again, it isn't the same as what you describe in windows but one of many alternatives.

Apple try to push people into iPhoto for photos which is a bit of a love/hate application for me. If you do start using iPhoto the best thing to know is that file>reveal in finder is how you locate your original or modified image on your hard drive.

If you really do regret the switch to apple and think that you won't get used to the changes I'd arrange a return while you are still within your 14 day return period. If you stick with it you'll probably get used to it and love it but if you have doubts you still have an out.

Again, you have to set aside Windows doctrine, OS X works different, nobody or few people browse picture folders like that since it does not work that way, open iPhoto and import photo's, that's the way to go.

I can tell you thousands of reasons why OS X and Apple HW is much better than Windows will "ever" be.

Trackpad is the best in the world, all clicks are registered unlike Windows, even when the Sytem seems to be stuck, when it's unstuck the click will be registered.

Same goes for the keyboard, all input is registered, the system will get ALL input unlike Windows.

No Virus scanner needed, there are no (known) viruses for OS X, which mean no resources lost on crappy virus software.

Apple's Customer service is by far the best.

OS X

The UI, Icons have been and will be much nicer than Windows.

Integration of services, for instance iCloud,iPhone.

Booting from another Disk, easily done and build in by default, just hold the Option key at startup and there are all your bootable Disks + Recovery and Utilities Tools.

Maintenance, not needed on OS X, defragging-forget about it.

OS X won't get slower and slower over time, Windows needs reinstallation faster when more software is installed and uninstalled, this will not be an issue on OS X.

Resale of your second hand Mac, Macs keep their value much longer than PC's.

Need More reason, plenty more but I'll stop here.

I got a refurb 15" mbpr at Easter, was noisy sent it back and the got the new 2013 model and it is silent. Sure they would of picked up that in their thorough check.
Refurbs are like pot luck if you get one someone sent back for change of mind all good, but know way they fix ones that go back for light bleed or ir, they just keep sending them out till someone gets it that doesnt notice or care. Otherwise every refurb would be the perfect 100% machine.

And i am proof, i have a late 09 imac that has light bleed, it was my first mac and new nothing about it and didn't even realise till i read about it ages after i got it.

To be honest you did try save money and go refurbished. A refurbished unit is one that has been returned so it has a higher chance of having an issue. Some if not most would be fine, seems you got a lemon.

Be it a Dell, Acer, Sony, all hardware can slip though QA.

Just return it.

I used to order my Apple products online etc, I have also encountered issues in the past, now I just buy from the Apple store, as resolution/replacement is so much easier. Apple have the best customer care, you just got unlucky.

Actually, I would imagine that a refurb would have far less chance of having an issue than a brand new unit. A brand new unit is able to fall victim and slip through the cracks of mass production, a refurbished unit is singled out and not only repaired with new parts, but double quality checked for resale.

No, I am pretty positive it is much worse than that, half of his backlight is not working.
There was another poster here several months ago, sadly can't find it and the picture.

It is something like this where the v is a working LED and a dot is a non working dot.

V.V.V.V.V.V

Normal would be

VVVVVVVVVV

Wow that looks terrible. Just call Apple and let them know and I'm sure you can get the entire unit replaced.

i know, i guess you r right
but my previous 30 years with pc, never had an issue
and my biggest issue is that i dont find Mac intuitive at all! everything seems to me so difficult, and counterintuitive, dont understand where files are stored, how to go through pics (why should I import in Iphoto just to view them? i want to seem them ALL where they are)
I mean, I am still far from understanding Apple logic

I felt the same way in 2010 when I switched from Windows 7 to OSX. Now Windows feels like using a telegraph.

PS your LED backlight diffuser has come unglued. Take it back to Apple it's not something you can repair.

thanks everyone

Called them, and since it's refurbished they'll give me the money instead of sending me a new one. And I have to buy a new (refurbished or not) one.

As far as all the mentioned advantages

beautiful: yes

<<Again, you have to set aside Windows doctrine, OS X works different, nobody or few people browse picture folders like that since it does not work that way, open iPhoto and import photo's, that's the way to go.>>

that simply means to me that Mac has its own logic, which it doesnt mean is INTUITIVE. This is what I am against.

<<Trackpad is the best in the world>>
i am really surprised indeed it can distinguish from one or two fingers. But I am still struggling to right-click, as sometimes it directly opens the link instead.
And what is "click with both right and left" I used to do to directly open a link w/o going through a menu?

<<Apple's Customer service is by far the best.>> OK

<<The UI, Icons have been and will be much nicer than Windows.>> this is in the "beautiful" category, I dont find the UI so more intuitive. And i prefer Intuitive over "nice"

<<Maintenance, not needed on OS X, defragging-forget about it.

these are the manin reasons i made the switch, simply I was fed up with all these problems

You will get used to it, believe me, it's a struggle I can imagine but it takes a bit of effort and time.

I myself used Macs for about 14 years now, never bought a PC, I hated Windows those days but it has come a long way, it is much more stable and usable but there are still things I don't like about Windows.

I bought a new Mini 2 months ago, I used all OS X versions from 10.0 beta to 10.5.8, then I skipped Snow Leopard and Lion and my Mini came with 10.8.2 Mountain Lion.
Had to get used to it, so much changed since 10.5 Leopard, there are still things which I dislike in ML and they used to be better in Leopard, hell, sometimes I wish I could install Snow Leopard since you can still run Old software on that one and there is less eye candy, spaces was much better than it is now, I don't like mission control, just gimmicky and does not add anything to improve speed.

Now, that does not mean I go back, I will get used to it and in the last 2 months it's getting better, and I guess you will get used to it as well and later on you really wish you never even were on Windows.

As others have pointed out - don't force your Windows software/habbits into a Mac. You will not be happy.

There is no use for RealPlayer. You have iTunes. (hated it under Windows to sync my iPhone/Pad, now it runs 24/7, streams iTunes Match, radio, you name it). I was a strict user of Chrome. I just use Safari know. Very nicely integrated and - it just works. The list goes on.

Interestingly, i had the same problem with installing apps. The window opened like yours and a strange looking Application folder was staring at me. A friend (Mac User) showed me how easy it is, just drag and drop. Not 200 questions, this, that - you sure? Really sure? Oh - nice toolbar to spy on you perhaps? :)

The Mac has no registry. An app will usually install in the application folder and will stay there. Sure there are exceptions to the rule. But this is far from the nightmare that you know from windows - Shared Dll's. Are you sure you want to uninstall abcd123.dll? Another program might use it...

A Mac is a Mac. Think different. This is a very true slogan really. I started with MacOS ML in December and fell in love with the design. Unix shell at your fingertips. Gosh! So much better than the lousy crap Windows has to offer.

I agree on some of your points though - i have all my pictures on a NAS - i dont need iPhoto, Aperture, Lightroom whatever to just browse photos. So i found out what others suggested - cmd+a plus open preview and you can watch them there. Intuitive for Windows users you say? :)

Think different. Sometimes different doesn't equal better. Most times it does though.

how does a NAS work? is not just a storage device? how do you see them?

as far as open pics in preview, I found that i can skip through them once they are small, but not if I make them screen size

To the OP.
I got my mbp in 2011 and was also dumbfounded how to use the OS. But I fell in love with trackpad at once, there's no reason at all using a mouse.
It takes some time getting used to it all, but for just over two years now I've never had the OS fail me, not once!
Stay cool, get a new one and know it will still be awesomely quick for years to come ( which is more I can say about my vaio )
/J

NAS is a Network Attached Storage. In other words a big box with lots of HDDs in them. Instead of connecting a single external HDD to your Computer via USB, it's connected to your network via WiFi or Ethernet Cable.

You can then mount stuff that's on there and use it as a regular folder. That's one of the many if not hundreds of uses my NAS offers.

I bought a refurbished retina 13, my first mac.
Everything fine so far (besides my struggle to manage windows and icons in my firs non-windows environment) but I dont know if my screen is faulty or not.

I notice that especially on white/clear web pages, the light comes from the bottom of the screen, like if there are 7 or 8 little spotlights beaming their light to the screen. And in between this little bulbs there is like a small shadow cone...V V V V V V V just to give you a silly idea of how it looks like
My settings are set on "automatically adjust brightness". When I increase the brightness the problem disappears, as the little shadow areas become clear as well.
What do you experts think? should I send it back?
thanks in advance

Your screen is defective. Make a Genius Bar appointment to have it replaced. Turn around time is usually 24 hours.

sent it back yesterday
since it was bought refurbished, they'll give me the money back. If it had been new, I could have chosen between substitution or refund.

Actually, a refurbished Apple machine has had a much better chance of having better QA as it's individually inspected and tested. I think a lot of folks here will tell you that the refurbs they've bought have been indistinguishable from new.

As with anything, one slips through the cracks sometimes.

Don't be so sure. I worked for Apple OEM in Fremont, CA. Sometime brand new iMac comes will all refurbished internal parts. LOL... No way a customer would know.
Many many new parts from other OEMs can't pass stress test once put together in a new machine. Those parts get refurbished again by OEMs and still consider "new parts". Then it makes it way back to the Apple OEM again.
Other time, customer returns, bad machines, demo,... get brand new parts replaced, pass stress test and sold as refurbished. And more than half of the people there are ILLEGAL Mexican making less than minimum wage.
