Yes, MANY (if not most) people who jailbreak violate the law and install something they didn't pay for, but it's not a fair statement to say that someone who jailbreaks is someone who pirates.

You say 'it's not a fair statement to say that someone who jailbreaks is someone who pirates.' right after you accuse the entire jb community of stealing apps, i.e., ''MANY (if not most) people....install something they didn't pay for,...'. Class act.

Seriously? If you honestly need evidence just google IPA and see the thousands and thousands of sites offering cracked IPAs... do you think those people are paying for the apps when they install them? Look through the thousands of Installous threads, or the thousands of Appsync threads, all of which are designed for the sole purpose of not paying for an App. I love how people like you play it like they're so honest and naive to the fact that a large (majority, post a poll and ask if you want) of the population of jailbreakers pirate apps.

You defended the developer charging $20 for MyWi, which means you condone the use, which is stealing from AT&T (arguably committing fraud by misrepresenting your usage as coming from your phone when it's really being used by your computer, a service they specifically allow WITH A FEE that you evade by installing MyWi)...

Do you challenge everything everyone says? Looking through your posts it seems like your sole purpose of posting is to shoot other people down. Rather than play Mr Angel maybe you should evaluate your own doings because your own comments made in this board indicate you're in the group of people I classified as "most\many" ...

And PS "many" or "most" is not "all" so don't twist my statements. If you make assumptions based on lack of knowledge, that's your issue, but don't manipulate my words to support your crusade.

I didn't manipulate anyone's words. I quoted you. Go back to spending $50 on Facetime charges and screwing up iTunes 10 installs.

I added you to my Ignore list. I added The Spaz a long time ago and since he's been banned you're the only one. Life is too short to waste it reading your condemnations of the entire jb community posts.

Sorry I'm not a loyal AT&T customer like you who doesn't have to worry about traveling the globe and the consequences of Apple's FT activation. I'm jealous of your lack of having to experience world travel, lol.

Pretty sure clicking INSTALL didn't screw it up. But hey, feel good knowing you can arrange all of your officially purchased, legitimate apps in iTunes's App Tab... good for you.

Traveling the globe doesn't make anyone smart or informed and you have no idea where I have traveled. More ignorant and arrogant statements.

Back on topic, does anyone know anything else about the supposed $2 app that will be coming from cydia?

musclenerd 'announced' that about a month ago and nothing ever happened. I sent him a tweet and he never replied.

I don't see a significant difference between the logic used to justify jailbreaking (with the intention to use MyWi) and the logic used to justify pirating MyWi.

There's no officially sanctioned way to tether an iPad to the iPhone, so MyWi or similar alternatives are the only means. I would pay ATT to occasionally tether my iPad, but I'm considering jailbreaking because there's no other way to tether over Wifi for now.

The official method to get a 3G connection over the iPad, as you said, is to purchase a separate plan for the iPad.

blah blah blah

a) jailbreaking is now legal but may void your warranty
b) tethering is legal, I paid for the data, I can use it how I damn well please
c) Jailbreaking =/= Installing Installous and pirating software, you are just trying to dumb down the argument to win your argument

I have paid for several iphone apps and several cydia apps, I have money and feel if you want good software you support the developer by paying/donating

+1 -

a) agree

b) no you paid for device-access under their contractual terms, so you legally CANNOT use it how you please. It's a free country, but not THAT free... if you agree in a contract to do something (so long as the contract doesn't requite you to violate any laws), you're legally compelled to do it. With that said, AT&T is just as bad at not holding up their end of the bargain, so I'm not saying doing it is morally\ethically wrong, it's just technically breach of contract, lol.

c) I agree. I love how everyone claims to be so innocent yet there are torrents alone with hundreds of thousands of people having downloaded cracked apps... doing the math here and any way I calculate it most people do something they're not supposed to with their jailbroken iPhone, but like anything there will be people who follow the rules, people who don't and admit they don't, and then people who say they don't drive over the speed limit, yet have 5 speeding tickets on their record, haha. Not sure why so many people live their lives in denial... you can lie to yourself all you want, but when people lie to others it's so transparent.

I have a photo of me as a baby telling my parents I don't know who are the cake, and I had a big blob of frosting on my nose and forehead. Classic! Now I just honestly say yeah, I jailbreak and no, I don't necessarily pay for every app. I support the developers in the apps that I feel I truly benefit from.

a) The ruling only stated that jailbreaking your iPhone is not in violation of the DMCA. It stated nothing else in regards to the legality or illegality of jailbreaking under any other laws. It basically made official what was already generally accepted.
b) You paid for data on your iPhone specifically, not on other devices. AT&T offers a venue for users who wish to tether, which is paying $20/month to extend the data usage to other devices.
c) The act of jailbreaking itself may not equate, but the justification for the act of jailbreaking with the intents of installing MyWi are very similar to the justification used to justify pirating MyWi. As stated earlier, in both methods, you are trying to circumvent the "official" pay method because there is a more affordable alternative.

Very good observations ... + 1

A bit of a JB newb question but why is there so much hate for Rock? Not looking to start a flame war, just need to know if there is something I should be watching out for.

While this isn't exactly a correct comparison, think of Rock as a faster but much buggier, less functional version of Cydia.

Back on topic, does anyone know anything else about the supposed $2 app that will be coming from cydia?
The app is Tether Me, it costs $2 and there is an extra app that extends it to give you the ability to sync to another iphone, ipod or ipad (forgot the name EDIT: is ITether) It is not a hotspot system like Mywi, but you can connect to your other iOS devices using the extension app for the Tether me app.
There is an app called iTether in cydia for like $5 and is supposed to be similar to Mywi and even consume less baterry supposedly...

Nah that's not what they're referring to... there was an app announcement that was going to do the same thing as MyWi, but a dumbed down version (no bridging, less features, simple GUI) that was going to be cheap and available soon.

It's not a complicated task, the only feature i care about is taking the 3G signal and broadcasting it as an SSID to use it from my laptop. Don't care about WEP\Security, nor do I care about what it LOOKS like, nor do i care if it does bridging or anything else.

Tether Me ($2) is basically what you want since you are only connecting one computer to it. Tether Me enables the tethering from the iPhone and gives you two options either by USB Cable or by Bluetooth and no extra tethering charges to one computer. download the sbsettings toggle for it and is one a swipe and press away! Why would you want a hotspot if you are only using one computer? it would drain a lot more battery, slower internet and the phone will get hotter! There are no other apps that I know of apart from those two form Cydia... where did you read on it?

Did you read? I said I want something that broadcasts as WIFI. Not bluetooth nor cable tether.

Yes, I read you wanted to have 3G broadcasted as SSID, which is why I said why would you want to do that, since the benefits of a Service Set would be detrimenal to your power and life consumption of the phone (like I wrote on my post) when the other two connections options are actually better in all senses, internet speed, heat issues, battery life, etc. If it wasn't a laptop, but an ipad or ipod then I would understand the need, but maybe your laptop does not have bluetooth integrated and you don't want to carry the cable or something then I would understand.... Usually people that use a wifi hotspot is because they have iOS devices or multiple other electrical things using the phone's 3G internet at the same time...

Yeah right

AT&T doesn't offer unlimited data + tethering

its not a "choice" o about finding a more affordable option

I would pay an additional fee if apple allowed tethering and let me keep my unlimited data plan but that choice doesn't exist

While I don't disagree with you, your argument is absolutely ridiculous. It's the same as saying "if the cable company offered a cheaper package for everything I wouldn't have to use the descrambler box to get the package" ... There ARE alternative carriers that'll give you unlimited data... you just CHOSE not to go with them. Lack of an option you like isn't justification. "Officer, I had to speed because the speed limit is too slow"...
