Can't say i've ever had a pet name for a computer before. Just seems kinda odd. I did change the name of my MBP in the Sharing pref to Powermacinbookintosh because when Apple started calling their pro notebooks MacBook Pro it sounded almost as stupid to me.

TiBook - Neferlin
iPhone - Sermo
iPod touch - Orexis
iPod nano - Tempero

I have a bit of a Latin theme going. :)

My mid-06 MBP 15 is called Desmond, and my mid-09 MBP 13 is called Dafne.

(I started naming stuff so I'd care about them more - first iPod, an iPod mini was called Mackenzie. Now I seem to be stuck on D- names (like the above mentioned, but also Dexter & Darwin (iPod classic / iPod touch).

Mine is simply named "Jason's MacBook Pro". Makes it easy to identify on the family network. My hard drive however.....that's a far sicker tale:

A guitar is a musical instrument. Many people are attached to their instruments (see Yo-Yo Ma buying his 'cello it's own first-class airplane seat), because an instrument is something you make art with, something emotional. Who makes art on a Macbook? Does graphic design really count?

Of course graphic design counts. Whats the difference between someone painting a picture and someone making something in PS?

As far as the whole emotional tie with a guitar, I don't understand it, I play guitar and bought the guitar I always wanted, but I haven't named it and it isn't my friend, it's the tool I have always wanted.

My friends and I have taken to naming our computers after Shakespeare characters. My Blackbook is currently named "Othello," because I'm clever (or lame) like that.

I see no issue in naming objects that you use every day and are important to you, whether it be a network identification name or not.

My Blackbook is Othello, my iPhone is Puck, the hand-crafted, wooden bass guitar made for me by a friend is named Beatrice (due to an inlaid mother-of-pearl "B" on the head) and my car, a 1992 Eagle, is nicknamed The Eags.

Naming something is a way for people to express gratitude and to mark something as special. I have many other pieces of electronics/tools/instruments that I have never named, nor have I any intention of doing so.

I find no difference in naming a car or a boat or a plane or a guitar or a computer. They all have a special relevance to whomever is naming them.

Do y'all call your electronics by its name? I'll call my iPod "My Baby" because I love her (?) so much. Ex: (Mom) "Go get in the car!" (Me) "Okay! Lemme find meh baby first, though!"

Mine's called MacBob Pro as my PC in it's various incarnations has been called Bob in homage of the Blackadder II ep, so MacBob Pro seemed like a natural progression.

Classic thread by the way, some very funny posts, my fave so far has to be SkiddyMcPooperson, freaking awesome. My respect to you sporadicMotion.

My old MacBook was Mackenzie and my new MBP is Maple. Do people think I'm weird for doing that? Yes. Do they judge me? Probably. But naming my MBP really helped our relationship ;)

Haha nice.
And having unique names really helps when networking. It's a lot less annoying looking for 'oliver' on my network than it is trying to find 'Matthew Scott's 13 inch MacBook'.

Actually I (and anyone worth their salt as a network admin) will slap the sh*t out of someone for giving their computer a name on the network like "Shaggy". Mainly because, exactly the opposite of what you said, it is HARDER to know which computer you are administrating when you see "Scooby", "Velma", "Daphne", etc. instead of "Gary's Dell", "Matt's Macbook", etc. After all, which one is Shaggy? Which is Velma? In any serious workplace, names need to clearly identify which computer they are, so you can actually take time fixing problems and doing work rather than looking up who's computer "Scrappy Doo" is...

Cute names like that are acceptable ONLY on a personal network. Maybe in a workplace small enough or without central servers or administrators. Maybe.

Sorry to be a buzz kill and all...

Personally, the only time I call my computer by a name is when I am cursing it, so I guess you could say that my Macbook's name is "you little plastic piece of sh*t" :D

As I have to for anyone else who likes Firefly, I must say to you sir: very nice. Guess I could have guessed you were a fan by looking at your avatar, but still, props. Awesome show :p

then you haven't played long enough. i've been playing guitar for over twenty years and piano for just as long and I can tell you-without a doubt-that musicians become connected to their instruments because it becomes comfortable. examples?

SRV and his "Number 1."
Clapton and "Blackie."
James Hetfield (Metallica) and his no name white Flying V.
Willy Nelson and "Trigger."
Monty Montgomery and his battered 1986 DY62C.
Joe Strummer and his tele.
Eddie Van Halen and his Kramer frankenstrat.
...I could go on and on and this isn't limited to famous guys. ANyone who has toured, gigged and recorded can tell you with a straight face a familiar instrument is something you keep because it gets you making music the best way possible.

Yeah, guitars are different. My Gretsch is "Mr Happy".

i also need to add that a macbook DOES NOT equal a priceless vintage instrument. for th naysayers, try auctioning an MBP at Sotheby's. making a macbook is an automated process...a fine handcrafted instrument?!? psshhh...people have spent their lifetime trying to replicate the sound of a Stradivarius and they STILL haven't comes close.

if i were Ma, i'd buy a seat for my cello too! sh*t, lord knows what those baggage handler would do to my instrument?!?!?

I see your point. If this were my work computer it would be a different story. I use my MacBook at home and school, and at school I like to leave it in my room and screen share from the a lab computer. When I do this I have to type out the full computer name and it's just easier using the name oliver. It's also easier to spot among the lab computers when browsing the network because they are all have very long names that are based on where they are located, and they all run together after a while.

a gretsch man eh? i've got a duo jet and a setzer model.

Yeah, was more of Gretsch man in the past (before a lovely divorce) :p

Right now all I have is a Pro Jet and it's just turned into a project guitar... it's not bad and I might have liked it more if I didn't know what a REAL Gretsch was like. I wanna get another Duo Jet though... my last was by far my favorite guitar of all time. I've found a new fascination with VOX lately (usually a vintage Marshall man) so I'm looking at picking up a Duo Jet and an AC-15 for small club gigging.

How do you like the Setzer?

YOU ARE AN IDIOT!

You smell funny.

We can be a little nicer than that.

I haven't come up with a name for my MBP but the AEBS is called "The Hybrid" it's a Battlestar Galactica reference and when I get my Mac Pro it will be called "Octopussy" after the james bond movie.

And likewise, I see your point. You just came across initially as being some sort of network administrator and as I said, in a workplace environment, silly names are not OK.

If I could ever figure out how to remote into mine, I imagine I will change my computer name to something with 2 syllables or less :p "**** ********'s Macbook" is a little much to type...
