This is an interesting thread..

Named my Powerbook Isaac, sold it, then bought a Macbook Pro 13" and also named it Isaac.
My iPod mini is called Newton. ;)

iPhone is called Amazo (from Justice League)

I call mine simply "the Mac". Its not really a nickname, it just happens to be the only Mac in the house. :)

This is kind of pathetic... I mean, a boat, or a sweet car, I could understand. But a computer? I understand that many people (including myself) love their Macs, but I don't think this calls for a name...

My computer's name is the same as the home folder. That's how it reads on the network anyway.

A guitar is a musical instrument. Many people are attached to their instruments (see Yo-Yo Ma buying his 'cello it's own first-class airplane seat), because an instrument is something you make art with, something emotional. Who makes art on a Macbook? Does graphic design really count?

You know, some of us are writers. That's not necessarily "art," but it does make the computer about equivalent to the guitar.

And mine is "Garabaldi" after the statue in Washington Square.

I don't usually refer to my computer by a name....I just say "My computer."

But as far as network names go, it's "P-p-p-p-pppowerbook!!!"

Yes...even though it's a 13" MBP.

The reason why most people don't name their computers is because they are too disposable. OTOH, guitars and musical instruments, as well as many cars, remain with us for many, many years --sometimes for life.

I title the HARD DRIVE after whatever the machine happens to be. For my uMB, I call the HDD "uMacBook."

It's not weird to name your car, plane, boat, instruments but it's weird and nerdy to name your computers?

I don't think it's weird at all. Especially towers that you build yourself. You invest a lot of money, time and energy to get them running.

I personally name pretty much everything I own because I get attached to everything I own.

I call all my laptops "Keiko". MBP15 is technically Keiko #4. XD

Why? 'Cause it's my girlfriend's middle name.

Well...

My family and I have a naming "tradition."

My MBP 15 inch is Wolverine and my former G3 iMac was Superman.

My father has also named his G3 iMac Batman and the eMac Iron Man.

Even the router and back up HD continues this. Bat cave and Fortress of Solitude respectfully.

Surprisingly my iPod is named Sheila.

i also need to add that a macbook DOES NOT equal a priceless vintage instrument. for th naysayers, try auctioning an MBP at Sotheby's. making a macbook is an automated process...a fine handcrafted instrument?!? psshhh...people have spent their lifetime trying to replicate the sound of a Stradivarius and they STILL haven't comes close.

if i were Ma, i'd buy a seat for my cello too! sh*t, lord knows what those baggage handler would do to my instrument?!?!?

Yes, I will never let my violin go to check in. I don't have the money to buy my violin an extra seat every time I fly, (if I bring it) so I just got it a really good case and put it in the overhead bin and watch people who open it:D.

Mine is simply named "Jason's MacBook Pro". Makes it easy to identify on the family network. My hard drive however.....that's a far sicker tale:

Hmm, I see. How do you change your computer's name? So far I can only find out how to rename the hard drive.

Within the family we have 6 Macintosh desktops and laptops in the house, so calling everything "Macintosh HD" or "MacBook Pro" or the clever "Untitled" name was a headache.

Currently I use the names of dead rock stars (Joplin, Hendrix, Morrison.....).

The kids pick their own names. My daughter the english major uses the names of obscure Irish poets.

My son the prefers t he names of obnoxious characters from movies and video games.

My daughter the art major and free spirit uses names that I don't recognize but mean something to her.

In homage to the McWaffle that I had this morning, I hereby name this 2008 15" 2.53GHz Macbook Pro... SOGGYMCWAFFLE!!!! (thunder and Monty Python music plays)
