I installed beta 3 and went for a quick run without the phone and didn't get a route. That's the same as what I saw in beta 2. I guess we may never get an answer about the mysterious gray dots and route tracking without the phone in beta 1.

I did however get the weather in the workout page, even without the phone. And auto pause is now working again in beta 3. Didn't work at all in beta 2.

Interesting. I was going to try a run without the phone in the morning, but I'll bring it with me. Curious if I'm going to get routes back.

It is very strange. Haven't been out bike riding since beta 2 (busy and horrible heat wave) so I've only been testing with walks but it's been pretty consistent for me. Hasn't failed to present one since beta 1 I think.

I will also note that I've always had my phone on me as well. I'm not currently much of a runner so I find it easy to take it with me on walks and always had it in either a pocket or backpack when cycling. Just some more info regarding tests. I think the main thing to look at and be happy about is that they don't seem to be going away! It'd suck if they just shuttered the features right before the GM but I highly doubt that. Just seem to be some great new things they didn't have time to tout at WWDC. I had been hoping for native route tracking since I had gotten my watch so this stuff is great.

True, we may never know how the routes were being made in b1 and what the grey dots came from. I guess the good part about it is that we at least know Apple's been working/testing something out. Maybe even for a potential future watch with more hardware.

First run with watch + phone both on b3. Route, elevation and weather are back. Route has no gray dots when zooming in, likely because it used the phone's GPS? Zoomed in for the second screenshot to show it's not just lining it along the roads.

Wow, under 60º F and 66% humidity. You live in England? What time of day do you have such a nice temp and relatively low humidity? Right now at 6:30AM and is 74º F (24º C) and a stifling 90% humidity. So far it has been the most humid summer in Atlanta I can remember. What I would give for a 60º/66% humidity day. Please come on fall.

LOL! I'm half an hour from Niagara Falls on the Canadian side. This isn't typical morning weather right now. It's actually been much more hot and humid this summer. We've had several the past few weeks where you almost can't (or shouldn't) run outdoors. But yeah, gotta take advantage of mornings like this, so refreshing.

Beta 3 seems a bit more unstable to me. Did a 30 mile bike ride this AM and didn't get a map or splits. I rebooted the watch afterwards and tried a quick walk of about 10 minutes and it never synced to my phone even though it shows as the last activity on the Quick Start workout. Did another quick walk around the yard with the phone and this time got a map.

Did another run this morning with the phone & watch. Route showed as expected, but there was a single grey dot on the map. I zoomed in and more dots showed, the more I zoomed the more dots became visible.

Surely the dots are where you have had poor gps signal and it has added a predicted route?

Good thought - that's likely the case. Interesting as the dots had disappeared in b2 workouts.
Sure wish Apple would offer an explanation (even if just a support page) on what, why and the way it works. I guess we will have to wait and hear at the fall event. Sure points to a next gen since I can't image Apple talking (much) again about wOS3 without a new product to sell.

Slightly off topic, but what do you think about Watch 2.0 hardware - I'm curious if it's something we'll see this fall or if we'll be waiting until the spring.

You mean what Tim told me the last time we spoke?:D

I kind of hate to get too much into speculating since it tends to bring out passions in people. However my beliefs and maybes as of now for :apple:Watch 2 are below with IMO the most likely to least likely:

  • New Bands (too easy)
  • Faster more efficient S2
  • Same Form Factor (case) and Batt
  • Fall release (x-mass is big and rumored original was wanted to be fall but not ready in time)
  • GPS (this thread tends to support, although no use to me since I carry my iPhone >99% of the time)
  • Barometer
  • Blood Pressure
  • Improved Optic HR
  • Body Temp
  • Glucose Level
  • Stress Level

Lol, you mean you don't chat with Tim on a daily basis? I agree with your thoughts. I'm more curious if we'll see actual updated hardware this year. Almost have a feeling that with watchOS 3 they'll push hardware further off. Hope I'm wrong though.

Yesterday IDC reported it's estimates that :apple:Watch sales are down 55% from last year. People are holding off buying in large part because they expect new hardware.

Just a little rant: For 2 years all we heard from Apple executives was (paraphrase) 'if you could see the products in our pipeline....'. Well where are they now?

That's true. Remember how often 'products across 2014'. September will be 2 years since we first saw the watch, so maybe we'll finally be seeing new hardware. I keep wondering about it as a few people I know are quite interested, but I'm telling them hold off at least until september.

Just noticed this in the Activity app under the day's summary bar graphs. Grays the area and marks "Fitness" above the section that corresponds to a workout.

Inferior twino_O wOS 2.2, less Move and less Exercise.

So you get gray anytime the Workout app is running no matter what the selected Activity is (Running, Other, etc)? Wonder if gray if you are working out without the Workout app and/or using a 3ed party app.

Ah, that must be it - I was also using a 3rd party app (it was a bike and the app connects to a few Bluetooth sensors and drives a Bluetooth connected display).

I was looking at previous workouts and wasn't seeing the gray.

I have had route tracking for about one week. Now I no longer have it.don't know how or why it stopped

I had a stretch as well where the routes didn't show up for workouts. Chalk it up to it being beta I guess.

Which also leads to the question (rhetorical of course). If we get a :apple:Watch 2 w/GPS this fall with wOS 3 release will Apple still allow or disable the tracking feature on gen1 watches?

I would be disappointed if the gen1 would be crippled. Because we all saw that it works, right?

No because ONLY developers have been granted access to use, test and see it. Also under the developer NDA it is not supposed to be discussed (rules 5,6&10) except on the Apple developer forum.

^Good points. And unlike iOS & macOS, there's no public betas for the general public to officially see these features.
