Well considering that smart criminals, just like (not-so) smart criminals cost the various law enforcement agencies, n police departments millions if not billions of pounds/dollars (you choose the currency) to track em down, and get them behind bars. I dont want to give them credit for it really, i mean the lose of those 4k of iphones~3billion in cash is gonna cost apple (not that they cant afford it anyways) but still it would be nice to know that they are comfortable with what they have. They have money to play with, but if these thefts keep going on, those money piles will start dwindling somewhat, even if only slowly.

Second to that the iphones being sold on the black market, will also drive up prices in other areas, because that money isnt going to apple, its going to some hood rat in the market.. Thus, if you wanna see apple, a pioneering computer/electronic accessories manufacturer stay up, and provide us with quality products, i'd strongly recommend people buy from the official shops/stores. Helps us all out :)

I suppose you wish you were part of the real italian job eh? Or were you?? lol! :p

I love that movie!

How ironic that all of those phones are equipped with GPS yet can't be found

it's a shame macrumors doesn't have a thumbs up / plus / favorite comment sort of feature.. but this made me laugh. stupid side note, but does such a feature exist on these forums?

I'll give 10:1 odds they are already in China. Thanks to the Chinese officials flip-flopping on WiFi, all the official Apple-sold phones do not have it. Black market iPhones with WiFi are going for a LOT of money.

How come when my Iphone gets stolen, ATT doesn't permanently disable it? Or help me track the thief? it would be easy, they could hard wire a chip with the GPS, and unauthorized logins would trace back to where the user was.

same happened with me.. i was mugged and the police wouldn't involve O2, apparently it is a waste of time and money to get them to search for the phone using Cell Towers - if you really want a new iPhone for free. make a serious complaint... i'm planning too... or at the very minimum demand a new iPhone for the contract price minus a sum  good luck

Damn thieves, I hope each of those thieves get's robbed and dies a horrible death.
Sound messed up? Well so was stealing 4,000 iPhones.

Stealing 4,000 IPhones is kind of an accomplishment for those criminals but at the same time that is wrong and i\m happy the had found those IPhones because Stealing is wrong:cool:

Surprised that this thread is still going, anyway, just wanted to let you guys know that belgian media are reporting that the iphones have started being sold in Russia, through various channels. And warning people that since the imei-numbers of these phones are known, they can be blocked by the carriers, which would make them glorified ipod touches.

Google translated article from the belgian ZDnet website

(google wrongly translates the dutch phrase for "the phones could be disabled" as "the phones are disabled" just to be clear, for the moment those phones are functional)

All Mobistar needs to do is forward all the S/Ns to Apple and they will be blocked on the Apple activation servers. Then the phones aren't worth much.

That's right because the type of people that stole these would never do something as criminal as unlock/jailbreak them.

Affordable iphones

If the phones were more affordable, they probably wouldn't have been stolen in that heist. As mentioned above, Apple gets their insurance money and may not care. But they probably love the popularity their iphone is getting.
You can bet this will be up for discussion in their board room.

Probably not.

How long does it take to unbox and jailbreak an iPhone? Now multiply that by 4000. That's an awful lot of work and geek-hours required. By the time they're done a new iPhone version will be out and the value of these will be reduced.

They had a buyer for all the iPhones before they stole them, probably to be used in a country where iPhones aren't available yet and where carriers wouldn't care to respect IMEI blocking anyway.

This reminds of me of the Apple Store heist in New Jersey. :p

I really wonder how did they get 4k iPhones out of the building...

They came in from the roof, but Im sure they got it all out by unlocking the loading dock and into an awaiting 18 wheeler
