I changed my message telling people I was out of the country and would not be returning calls until I got home. I also gave my daughter's phone # (who wasnt with us) and said if it was urgent to call her and she would call us. I then did not check (listen to) any messages that were left until I got back into the states.

I did use my phone to make calls while in Canada for both calling home and calling places in Canada. I did use the phone alot to find places (campgrounds, restaurants), taxis etc and it came in real handy, but I was EXTREMELY cautious not to use any features that required data unless I had wi-fi.

Wouldn't you agree that making an Edge Off switch would make our lives easier though?

YES, definitely. But for now, people need to realize that you can "not use" Edge, you just have to know what part of the phone uses the data so you can be smart about not have astronomical bills.

Have you gotten your bill for the trip you're talking about? If your iPhone is anything like mine, there's a good chance that, overnight, it made some significant data transmissions while it wasn't being used. Based on my calculations, those transmissions would cost up to $100 each if I had been out of the country.

Yes, I got my bill(online). The only data roaming I was charged for was 50 cents.... when my brother sent me a text message.

Email is another if you have it set to check periodically/automatically. Therefore it MUST be set to manual and only checked when you are absolutely sure you have wi-fi.

Still agreeing there should be a way to turn it off, but just trying to help anyone who may be travelling out of the US.

I have been in Germany for two months with my iPhone, I bought it on friday when it came out and flew on monday. the data roam rate is nothing less than a crime. But ok, I accepted it. $500 first month bill, it is amassing how $0.02 adds up.

There needs to be a quick way to disable EDGE, so that it is available in a pinch. Some times I don't care about the cost of using the edge because it is important that I pull up a page or a map. If I would have told AT&T to disable my edge for my trip, this would not be a possibility.

BUT my main BEEF is: When you are on a free hotspot, just screwing around, surfing, watching youtube videos, etc. And the wifi drops out, switches to EDGE and the only indication that this happened is on the menu bar. It would be nice if there was a pop-up saying that you wifi connection is unavailable and you are about to switch over to EDGE where it is easy to spend over $100 in less than 30 min. It happens to quick and too often. There needs to be a on/off switch.

Beats me what the data transmitted was. It was on the order of 1 to 5 MB, at 1:00am or 1:30am or similar, and I didn't receive any emails of voicemails at that time. Go figure.

I didn't realize it cost anything to receive text messages

I was planning on buying an iPhone and unlocking it to use in Canada, but this talk about data usage occurring without checking stocks/weather/email/Safari worries me. Can someone confirm that this is only Visual Voicemail? I don't have voicemail on my cell phone or a data plan for that matter so I'd like to avoid using EDGE as much as possible except for texting

I've heard reports that the visual voicemail file it sends to your phone can show up on the bill since its technically data and treats it as such.

I am going to Canada this weekend, and I talked to an AT&T international provisioning person last night about it. I asked specifically about this, because I had heard that as well, and he said that visual voicemail does not use EDGE. I asked him if he was absolutely sure, and he said yes.

That being said, it would not surprise me in the least if he was wrong.

I never knew you could do this, I am leaving tomorrow on a cruise and I know cruise ships have their own antennas, and charge insane rates. Can anyone else confirm doing this before I call att.

If anything I still have my BB pearl to take.

At least the Disney Cruise ships charge for internet by the minute: you buy a set number of minute before hand, then update if you use them up. The problem there was that the cruise WIFI was very slow; I used up 20 minutes just managing my earthlink web mail for about 5 messages. At least on the boat, there was no Edge service, so there was no risk of accidentally flipping over to it.

Phone calls were $2.29/minute, which seems standard for all the cruise lines; a great deal cheaper than ship-to-shore rates from in in-cabin phones.

But I agree, and have sent FEEDBACK to Apple (as you all should do as a way of "voting") to provide a setting to disable Edge. I've bee told, though have no way to verify, that even if you are just roaming overseas, and you have email set to manually check mail, and you never start email, sms, safari, weather, stocks, google maps, or youtube, the phone still checks in periodically via edge for visual voice mail. I don't know how much data gets transferred even if VVMail is never received, but a month of that activity will at up at $20/megabyte.

Wow

WOW this is one long thread ......still no answer....:D

here is something i figured out

go to settings>general>network>edge>change the apn (put an extra 1 or x or type "amit is great")

this will give you edge not subscribed error when to try to use edge

change the apn back to orignal apn (or remove the extra thingy you typed) when you want to use edge

but amit still remains great :D

PS: I am looking for a new job. :p

There isn't an "edge" option under Settings>General>Network>

Or you can install installer.app and download the program called "service" where you can turn edge, bluetooth, wifi and SSH on/off.

Yeah, I was gonna say that. I havent left the country with my phone, but it works like a charm in the states...

I currently do not have an iPhone, but I will soon. Since I use just a normal LG phone (CU500), I have media net as my "internet". You can "turn it off" buy calling and disabling it or not purchasing a plan (i think). The iPhone is different. You sign up for an UNLIMITED plan, so why would you want to turn it off? I understand the international roaming part, but all you have to do is..not..go..online. I understand your frustration, but there really is no point to turn off EDGE.

There is a point to for that option to turn ON/OFF the EDGE. See, if u're overseas, iPhone is a touchscreen and its really easy to open safari, youtube and all those apps that use EDGE without even knowing that u opened it. I think option ON/OFF EDGE shoud be made at least just for traveling abroad.
Me myself going to Ukraine (in Europe) in December for three weeks and i'm not sure if i should take my iPhone with me. Does anyone know, in 1.1.1 firmware there is an option to turn ON/OFF Data Roaming. Does that mean if i'll put it on OFF (basically i keep it all the time OFF), the EDGE will be OFF?

Yes, in 1.11 there is an option to turn off EDGE data roaming. I have mine on off all the time, but EDGE remains on until you are in a roaming area.

Travel

I used the phone in France with the Roaming off and it worked with no issues. When you are in a roaming area it will tell you when it is turned off. I was a little concerned about ensuring it was turned off. Additionally I added 20 meg international package and monitored the usage , when I did flip it on. I stayed within my cap and when I retunred to cancelled the plan, with no issues.

That's not possible. The iPhone, on its own, sitting by itself for several hours, can use up hundreds of dollars worth of international roaming EDGE. Even with Safari closed, stocks closed, weather closed, maps closed, no email coming in, no calls, etc etc etc.

Prior to 1.1.1, your only option was to leave it behind, or turned off, or turn it into an iPod Touch via airplane mode. Apple heard the complaints, realized it was a valid problem, and gave us this Data Roamin option. Good for Apple.

there is the EDGE option under Settings>General>Network> along with VPN and WI-FI in my unlocked 4GB iphone with 1.0.2 firmware, I will take a screen shot for you if you need prove. Here is what it shows under my EDGE setting
APN = DISABLE
Username: WAP@CINGULARGPRS.COM1
Password: CINGULAR1
I added that 1 after the .COM so I would not get EDGE error or accidently using EDGE at all, I am with ROGER in Canada and they like to rape their customer ass with data usage on cell phone so I really do not need a accident cell phone bill for $500+....

There is a third party software call SERVICE which can be installed with irbrick and it worked great for turn ON or OFF BLUETOOTH, WI-FI, EDGE in your iphone, maybe you guys should check it out, I used it and it works great and faster than going itno your SETTINGS - WIFI to turn on and off the WIFI.
