I would appreciate advice from anyone willing..

I have the original iPhone still in MINT condition..

The phone has sentimental value to me because I have a TON of old text messages from a close friend who has passed, and I have kept the phone so I will always have those..

However last night, when I went to read them, I attempted to charge the battery however it would not charge..

The phone still has some juice left, and works perfectly, but for some reason it wont take a charge..

My question is, is there any way to get the texts off the phone? Or any suggestions how to get it to charge? I would appreciate any advice!

Thank you!

Are you using PC or Mac? Have you synced the iphone and created a backup?

There are ways to extract the text messeges from the itunes backup of the phone.

If for some reason you are unable to sync the phone to the PC you can forward the messeges to your email from the iPhone.

I wouldn't be surprised at all of the battery is unable to hold a charge anymore. If you've synced this iPhone before ( on a mac ) then you should have all the texts backed up - if not then your worst case scenario is that you'll probably have to get a new battery. I highly doubt the texts are gone though.

So I tried to reboot it, and it still wont charge..

However, when I turn the phone off, and plug it in, it turns back on...so I know it is recognizing the power source..

I have not plugged it in to iTunes, as I have an iPhone 4, and I do not want to loose all of the old texts on my 2g when it syncs.

Please help, do I need to replace the battery?

It won't replace the texts. iTunes sees all iPhone different by Serial number and model.

So the back up for your iPhone won't be the same as your iPhone 4's

Are you sure?

I know when I have plugged in a different iphone before I lost my text messages. What is the benefit of plugging it into my computer over plugging it into a wall charger? Is there a difference?

Sorry for the questions..

If you're able to power on the phone for at least 5 minutes - I'd suggest taking a screenshot of all the texts by holding down the home+power button and letting go. It may not seem to be a feasible solution but it's the best I can think of so far.

I have a large amount of text messages, probably a couple months worth..

Exactly. Backup your phone OP.

Hey. For us "older" people, why do you younguns need to keep texts???

If you read my post, it is because my friend passed away...

Maybe us "younguns" are a bit more sentimental than you "older" people..

Unfortunately I don't think you can simply export out your text messages with a click of a button - unless suck jailbreak option exists for which you'll have to jb.

I was speaking in general terms about saving texts, not about your specific situation. Anyway, I skimmed your message just to find out how to help you. jav and I told you what to do, do it.

You’ll need a new battery if you want to keep using that phone. It’s not worth getting one, IMO, since you have a 4.

I've not used this myself but it looks promising:

http://www.ecamm.com/mac/phoneview/

Always Have Your SMS and MMS Messages on Hand

View and search your texts and multimedia messages, even when your iPhone isn't connected to your Mac. PhoneView automatically backs up your messages whenever your iPhone is connected. Messages can be exported as PDF files, text or XML.

I think its best you sit down for 20 minutes and take screen caps of all of those texts.

So I went ahead, and though nervous plugged it into my computer...

AND IT CHARGED!!!

Anyone know why it will charge via USB on my computer and not via wall charger??

Thanks again for the advice all..

Everyone keeps telling the OP to backup, but doesn't list the instructions to backup without syncing. (Of course, I am assuming the OP doesn't know how to backup without syncing first)

Connect your iPhone via usb and then open iTunes. You should see your first gen iPhone. Right click it and you'll see one of the options as "Back up".

This would completely bypass the syncing portion and create a backup for the iPhone. It will be different from your iPhone 4's backup.

I will say this once more. "Syncing" your iPhones does not delete any texts or call logs you have. Instead it backs them up.

Just doing a Sync means you created a back-up of your iPhone at that moment in time. Curiously, you can also do that via the back-up option.

But seeing as OP already solved the issue, case close.
