As this is my first post, please forgive me if i'm doing this all wrong.

I am using a mid 2010 Mac Book Pro running Yosemite 10.10.5 and LR5. I have a 3rd Generation time machine 2GB (the upright one) and have a specific question regarding all the above.

When i am storing my LR catalogs on my external 3TB Western Digital hard drive (Which died on me), would time machine have a back up of these files (pictures) or does LR5 bypass the time machine and all of my pictures are now gone forever?

Depends. Were these new files or did they sit on your Mac desktop or folder for a little bit? If so just click on the time machine icon and go back to the date of transfer and look for it in the original location.

It's possible that Time Machine created a backup of your external disc. If such a backup exists, then you can access it by doing the following:

  1. In Finder, press shift-command-K.
  2. Open the device Time Capsule.
  3. Press Connect as… and then enter your credentials.
  4. Open the file Computer name.dmg.
  5. Press shift-command-C.
  6. Navigate to Time Machine Backups/Backups.backupdb/Computer name/Latest.
