You're looking in the wrong direction, I meant that the $7 tier is outrageous when compared to the $10, with my good friend Mr. Hyperbole. The $7 tier makes the $10 tier look more reasonable (it's only three more dollars!) even though the $10 tier is rather limited in reality.
Oh my bad. Yeah price anchoring strategies are definitely a thing. Apple has been really good at it for a while. I'm curious to see how well this ad-supported plan does for Netflix - I think it'll be popular but won't really change the trajectory of the company.

Apple is definitely great at this practice, that's why I pointed to the AW Ultra. Almost all of the Apple product lines follow this method in some way.

Not the short term, any investor see's a new subscription service as impacting Netflix in several different ways. It does make a lot of revenue, but will it appeal to those subscribers enough that they keep using it. Or is it just a cheaper means to watch Netflix for short term then bail. Does it reduce the need to play games with relatives freeloading subscriptions. Does the ad service replace deals with cell companies? Going the ad route means additional cost as things needs to be transcoded separately to serve these new subscribers instead of limiting number of connections and connection speed. Nothing like this goes smoothly.

I dunno man, with the speeds I get now I can get a 1080p film in about 5mins. Or I can download an entire series in 4k in 5 hours; real 4k, not the Netflix 4k which isn't really 4k.

It's like 3 clicks to a magnet link, it's just far too easy not to do. I do see your point though, as most people probably don't really understand how to do it/it's not user-friendly.

Yeah, but even if it takes 1 minute to download that film, that’s still a lot longer than instant streaming. Then you have to open it up in a separate player app, remember to delete the file when you’re done, turn on AirPlay or copy it over to your TV if you want it on a big screen, sometimes mess around dealing with missing subtitles, etc etc. That’s assuming you know what you want to watch in the first place - streaming sites give you a much better browsing/discovery experience.

It all adds up to a fair bit of inconvenience, and for most people it’s worth just paying a few bucks a month for the real deal.

Idk about speed! An entire season in 4K can be downloaded/streamed rather quickly actually. Just as long as you have the *right connections* ;)

Btw, this is what my pirate buddy said ;)

Sure, but the whole experience is slower by the time you discover what you want to watch, download it, open it up in a player app or set up a stream to your TV, etc. As opposed to just one click to start instantly on a legit streaming service.

Netflix has already killed off a lot of the shows I used to watch on there and most of the content doesn’t interest me much anymore. I’ve cancelled and restarted so many times over the last couple of years but I always went to the 4K tier because that’s what looks best on my TV. Of course, they continue to jack up rates as well when all I really wanted was a 4K picture, no ads and 2 streams but they force you to pay for 4 even if you don’t need them. My current sub is ending tomorrow and I’ve decided to let it go.

I’m still a little miffed they deleted my original account I’d had with them for more than 10 years just because I went like 7 months without a subscription at one point. 👎

Weird. I’ve gone years at a time without an active subscription but it always seems to be waiting for me when I dip back in.

Netflix today announced the upcoming launch of the ad-supported tier that has been in the works for the last several months. The new "Basic With Ads" plan is priced at $6.99 per month in the United States, $3 cheaper than the standard Basic plan.

netflix-4.jpg

Basic With Ads will be available alongside the Basic, Standard, and Premium plans, offering 720p streaming video. Netflix is also updating the standard Basic plan with 720p support when the Basic With Ads plan launches.

Netflix's new plan will offer most of the same TV shows, movies, and "personalized viewing experience," but subscribers will see between four and five minutes of ads per hour. Ads will vary from 15 to 30 seconds in length, and will play before and during shows and films.

There will be a selection of movies and TV shows that will not be available due to licensing restrictions, but Netflix has not provided a list of content that will be inaccessible.

Unlike with the plans without ads, the ad-based tier will not support downloading movies and TV shows for offline viewing.

Netflix Basic with Ads is set to launch on Thursday, November 3 at 9:00 a.m. Pacific Time. It will be available in Australia, Brazil, Canada, France, Germany, Italy, Japan, Korea, Mexico, Spain, the UK and the US.

Basic with adds will only be on par with services that have no adds, like Disney, Paramount and Now TV in the UK, 720p is very poor quality and you won't get access to all the content, the service that is way too expensive is their top tier offering at around $19 a month, good quality but way too expensive and the lack of content which is not woke, are the reasons why people are just switching away from Netflix, I doubt this will reverse the trend 😏

Plex Server, my friend. Plex. Yes, there is some time investment to set it up, but it's free and forever. I run it on my desktop PC that i already have, but many do spend the extra to buy a drive dedicated to Plex.

It is nice to have a huge collection of movies that you don't have to spend 15 minutes figuring out which streaming service has it and how much it might cost to watch.

There was some issues with imported French film called cuties. Its was during Aug 2020.

Not something most remember, but stuff happens.
It sounds like people found Netflix’s original marketing for the film offensive (Netflix apologized and changed it’s marketing), but did anyone actually watch the film?

This film got good marks from the critics, but a lot of the audience didn't have the stomach for it. see RottenTomatoes.
With all the uproar over the movie I do wonder how many of those negative reviews were from people who actually watched the film. Personally I find the whole young girls beauty pageants to be in the same creepy realm. That said I have 0 interest in kids, never been fond of them (especially infants on planes)... 😉

Oh, I do use Plex server! Didn't set it up myself but I have a friend who has it and has given me access to his stuff. It's a nice enough UI, sure, but you still have to actually go and download the stuff you want to watch into it, right? So it's still more steps and admin compared to a streaming service.

Quick search engine for to locate movies and TV shows available on Netflix, Amazon Prime Video, Disney Plus and many more

To people complaining about 720p.

Yeah a lot of people mainly watch trough their phone, 720p heck even 480p is enough with phone screen sizes.
