I agree with you that the Netflix excuse (regarding AirPlay) is total BS.

I disagree with you on the second point. Netflix really is threatened by Apple's move into video/movie streaming. Gonna be a long time until Apple presents a realistic threat? Umm, they said the same exact thing about Spotify and Apple, that Apple could never catch up to Spotify's lead. Guess what? Apple Music just (a few days ago) surpassed Spotify, when Spotify once was the unrivaled king of music streaming.
[doublepost=1554589522][/doublepost]Netflix alienating their customers….. is exactly what will drive more people to check out the competition (e.g. Apple's new AppleTV+ video-streaming service, etc).
A poor strategic move on Netflix's part.

Netflix is getting too arrogant. I'll be looking to changing over to Apple TV+, that and Amazon Prime should be fine.

It’s kind of insulting that Netflix thinks we’ll believe this was a quality control decision for our benefit.

Still, it was completely predictable that other content providers would take steps against Apple when Apple started competing with them. Apple better do their service right, or they’ll end up having caused a lot of displeasure for their customers without a payoff...

Netflix has just released a "mobile only" tier in some countries for a discounted price. I think this is one of the preventative measures for it.

i wonder if they will also remove chromecast support given its also on tvs (vizio and sony for sure ) and not just android tv and the dongles or if its really anti-apple.

fwiw i was still able to screen mirror to my ATV.

You really don't need to worry about privacy and security through chrome cast but if you really think you at risk then wow you certainly fell for the marketing

Paying £140 or more to buy an apple TV to watch Netflix seems pointless

Just like if people really want your information and where you are then they will get it. Realistically you aren't in any real risk using Google devices.

Sure.

Google is the same company that discovered an bug in Safari, and instead of reporting it they wrote code to exploit it to continue tracking users against their wishes.

Is that what you call marketing?

Apple Music has only beaten Spotify is the US not world wide

It was just nice sometimes to watch something on iPad and stream the sound to my home theatre without having to fire up the projector... sad move Netflix, but obviously Apple is a competitor for them now.

Odd. Have you any good headphones for this?

The petty cowards at Netflix are finally ready to exercise monopoly power (just like dishonest Spotify) when They don’t get to run the whole show.

Personally I go out of my way to avoid supporting them in any way

I only have Netflix for Better Call Saul and Brooklyn 99. They’ve gotten rid of so many movies, and now that they’re acting in such a petty way to smite Apple but also customers, I’m not sure how much longer I’ll remain one.

I worked on Season 4 of BCS. Thanks for watching!

What’s the point of AirPlay if there is a Netflix tvOS app? This seems like the most difficult way to watch Netflix, and probably suffers in performance.
What if I went to some friends home and they do not have netflix subscription, but have apple TV?
I sure do not want to type in my credentials on their Apple TV!

Also, the reason given seems lame!

All the rage about this is quite comical. Netflix is literally everywhere. If you’re AirPlaying Netflix from your iOS device to a smart TV or an Apple TV, there is a Netflix app on the device you’re AirPlaying to. It’s Netflix’s iOS app and they can do what they want with it. If you don’t like it, vote with your wallet. Simple as that.

What is airplay? Is that like chromecast? Love Netflix and will be with them until another service offers better programming for the money.

Until now it works fine for me.
Yes, I noted that the AirPlay icon no longer appeared along the other controls, but activating it from Control Center works.
I use it on an 10.5 iPad Pro casting the sound to a SONOS One. It also works with the AirPort Express.
Latest version from the App Store I have currently installed is 11.27.2 (69) 5.0.1-001.
I also checked the following: AirPlay works whether you enable it before you start Netflix or when Netflix is already running.

Yeah, make the lawn damp in the morning.

There is no app on the device we are airplaying it to when we don’t control that device, or that device has no outside network access.

A poor strategic move on Netflix's part.

Apple surpassed Spotify in US paid subscribers, not overall users or global users. Spotify is still a ways out of reach. It also helps Apple preinstalls it on all devices sold.

I didn’t know they canceled all the marvel shows. There’s no point in Netflix without those shows. I cancelled because of your comment haha.
I can't believe you didn't know they cancelled all their Marvel TV series.

I agree. In our home AirPlay is only used to show videos that people have bookmarks on their personal devices. Most of those come from Social Media apps. Airplay is great but can't understand why people use it for everything. I see suggestion where some are using it as a 2nd monitor for a computer. Holy Crap the lag on that must be intense! Even if it's to hold the toolbars for Photoshop!

Also for all the other comments on Netflix's latest changes:
- They had no choice in dropping the Marvel shows. It was part of their Disney contract when they outbid Starz for it back in 2016. Disney wants its property back and plans to do a full court press on the superhero shows and mixing them in with the TV Shows. Why they purchased Fox!

- Remove subscriptions from the iOS app just makes sense. When you're a newcomer, you do anything to get new customers (loss leaders) like sell the latest console for $100 off (Limited Quantities!). But once you're big you don't want to keep losing money. Any members that comes in via iOS has an initial cost of 30% (Using Apple's network plus their fan base) the monthly has a different rate. Still cheaper than what was previously available. (Brick and Mortar stores had hefty fees to put your titles up on their shelves and Verizon's mobile store was impossible to get onto with out going through layers of companies! Netflix no longer needs Apple's network for promotion so to save some money they just removed the subscription from the app. Same with Amazon.
In my case it isn't laggy at all and I don't even have a gigabit internet connection but I will in the near future.

When Apple inks a deal for all the Star Treks I will say goodbye to Netflix and never look back.

There’s nothing on Netflix that I cannot do without after Star Trek.

There’s an official Apple- Apple Tv Remote app that works really well for this.
I use it from time to time but I still prefer AirPlaying the content from my iPhone. Anyway, in 18 days Netflix will be a distant memory for me.

Man, the cable companies must be KICKING themselves for not giving the customers what they wanted; the ability to watch shows on their own schedule.

I understand that advertising money and licensing dictated all those decisions, but they really should have seen the writing on the walls and been more proactive about acquiescing to their customers demands rather than sticking around in the 1970s.
