Interesting example considering Mickey is also public domain.
Wrong, it's not public domain until AT LEAST 2023. Does anyone even care about being accurate in their posts here? You also need to understand the difference between copyright and trademark. Mickey Mouse is copyrighted by ALSO trademarked, which is forever and prohibits the likeness used as trademarks without authorization.

And even when/if it ever is, who do you think will continue to make money on Mickey? You really think if Disney's powerful lawyers can't stop Mickey from entering public domain that some other company will make significant money from it?

Disney will kick this can until the world ends.

As far as their other content, Disney is the absolute king of content. I can't even list it all in a single post. It's insane. Suffice it to say that Disney owns much of the best content in the world.

Where do people find the time to watch all these streaming services, when I grew up we had Channels 2-13 which included most sports was free and honestly it was enough. We got the news for one hour between 6-7 and back then they just reported the news, no opinions or bias spins.

When we was convinced that we needed 200 different channels, 15 different streaming services and 24/7 news is beyond me but it hasn’t made us a better society.

Netflix will be spotified.

Not sure. The battle between Apple and Spotify is over delivering third party content. The battle between Apple and Netflix will be about creating content consumers want to buy. Creating content is a lot harder. Just my opinion of course.

No, it doesn't mean that at all. It means that for Apple, it's a VERY tiny portion of their business, unlike Netflix where it's their entire business.

Again, I'm very afraid if I'm Netflix. Disney and Apple stepping on to my turf, both with more Money and Disney as the king of content...which is what this game is about.

You are funny, actually you suggesting apple's I hope Apple doesn't pay you to defend them online, you aren't doing a very good job.

Nice retort with zero facts. I am an Apple investor, so I do get paid and keeping up with their business is part of my job for owning shares. This helps me do that so it’s a self-serving excerise.

No. Netflix is not Spotify. This is more likely to end up like Apple Ping, or best case scenario, a minor footnote in the services story. The odds of Apple dethroning Netflix are about the same as the headphone jack returning to iPhones.
This debate pretty must rests on the millennial generation. That's part of the reason why Netflix blew up.

“Up Next” is such a brilliant and helpful feature, the kind of thing that it seems like only Apple can do. It’s one of my favorite things about Apple TV, and it really sucks that Netflix isn’t a part of it. I know they are control freaks, and somehow think they’d be “losing” something by participating, but I think the opposite is true. Personally, I’d probably watch more Netflix if it was more convenient to pick up where I left off with a series via Up Next. And I don’t think it would hurt “discovery” of other Netflix shows because it’s not like the content plays in some kind of walled off Apple interface. When you click I’m a show in Up Next, it opens up the network’s own app to show you the content.

I like some shows on Netflix, and admire their go-for-it attitude, but they are a pain in the ass and kind of annoying as well. I think as the other streaming services catch up to their early lead, they will get a lot less haughty and start to play nice more often.

Okay - I get it now.

I never use the TV App on ATV because the listing inside is cluttered and messy - makes it complicated. I have the top row lined with the most used Apps and access directly.

Does it make a difference how one gets to a program? If so, how?

1) You can Siri search for content that is shared with the TV app. I can go into search or just talk to my remote and it pulls up the movie/show listing and shows me every service it's available on. Except Netflix. I have to then go into their app and search separately. Big difference. No value added to Netflix. Only frustration for me.
2) There's also the Up Next functionality. Integrating with the TV App not only allows you to browse via the TV app, but it keeps track of your history and allows you to just click on whatever's in your Up Next on the ATV homepage (not TV App) and be taken directly into the corresponding app. Instead, I have to sift through content by app because I am currently watching multiple things on multiple platforms.

Again, it is about simplicity in function through aggregation. Netflix needlessly breaks this by their refusal to integrate. They gain nothing from this, which makes it more frustrating than, for example, when Amazon Video didn't have an ATV app. Amazon held Amazon Video access hostage to add unique value to their streaming hardware (Fire TV). Netflix has no such skin in no such game. They're just being obstinate.

Looking for an excuse to drop Netflix. With all the Marvel shows being cancelled and the price increases, it's not really worth it to me anymore.

The fundamental flaw with this argument is in accepting the changes that were purchased into law. When people allow this behavior companies ask for more. Mickey should be public domain, and no argument you make will change that sentiment.

What? I like how you just glossed over being completely wrong. No argument you made means anyone but Disney makes significant money from Mickey and the franchise. Disney owns it and will own it.

Anyway, it's distracting from the fact Disney is the king of content, has money to constantly buy more, and has a library exponentially larger than Netflix.

For Apple, they could buy any content they wanted, including all of Disney's vast library.

Content is about $. You buy it (expensive) or create it (expensive, and hard). Disney is good at both. Apple has the most money. Great position.

Netflix will be in an ever more difficult situation the more competitors get into this game. Netflix has almost no quality original content and most of their viewership is watching licensed content. That's shaky.

If the majority of Disney content was public domain, as it should be than Netflix and others would have access to that content at no additional cost to them. Disney would have less negotiating power and their new content would cost less. Nexfix could return to improving the way content is consumed instead of being forced to focus on developing it.

How was I wrong? All I’ve said is that they shouldn’t have exclusive rights anymore. It’s an opinion.

Thank you.

Apple is just concerned about being the middleman these days. They are the lowly insurance salesman of the industry at this point, no idea why people expect anything from them now.

Take the credit card, services, and other junk and shove it.

I believe I am the most awesome person in my house.

Neither of our baseless beliefs are worth anything at all.

Baseless beliefs? You have Tim Cook telling producers to not make their shows too mean.

They nail plenty. Services are Apple’s biggest growth engine at over 20%. They will get this right and have all the money they need to do it. That’s the key in content...buying it.
They all the money to do anything right but guess what...they rarely do. Why would this be any different? Don't get me wrong, I hope they can pull something off without the heavy Apple caveats that come with everything these days. Let's see Timmy prove he can do more than just rot Apple via spreadsheets.

What % of Disney content do you think should be public domain? It's still a very small %. They flat out own TONS of content and you're stuck on Mickey.

"A bunch of data centers" is pretty much what Microsoft, Google, and Amazon do as well when it comes to tech in Europe. Sure, Amazon also has the warehouses for physical goods, but that has nothing to do with competing with Apple.

Google has a major R&D center in Zurich, Microsoft has several thousand employees in Switzerland alone and Amazon has been hiring for R&D here as well.

Is this the position companies take ? "We don't like the 30%, so first we'll throw in the towel on offering iTunes billing, then when they offer a TV service, that's the last straw."

...and in other news, Netflix won't be part of Hulu either. Duhhhhhh.

If companies are giving this way anyway, why do they all take it slow to go of alone ? Just do it all and get it over with
