But do enough people have enough download power to make that profitable? Netflix has a vast number of subscribers, but how many of those get 30megs down? Enough to stream a movie but not enough to play a decent game. My point being not should they do gaming but rather can they.
Short answer is Yes. Cloud gaming is actually the future and near future. Internet bandwidth problems will continue to be solved over time with tech such as 5G, 6G, fiber internet, etc.

When I was a kid in the UK in the 80s we had something called Teletext. It was like an early internet that went along side our 4 channels (BBC 1,2,3 and ITV). Even then there were news and jokes pages and (I think) word-based games. And I believe I saw an updated version in the 90s when I would visit my cousins where they had more modern casual games. It was a great alternative to watching TV for casual gamers and people who didn't consider themselves gamers at all.

That may be the sweet spot for non-Nintendo/Sony/Microsoft companies, and I think where Apple Arcade on the TV falls down. The production on Apple Arcade titles is high enough that they're compared to the consoles (their TV competition) and found lacking. Maybe the games need to be smaller so there's no comparison. Like classic freeware/shareware. Think of a 15 minute dip in/dip out experience rather than hours.

I'm skeptical, but if Netflix can lump this in with their standard subscription, then I may check it out. And no way Apple will let this in their ecosystem - they already said no to Xbox and PlayStation. But all in all, this new business model has me worried, very worried:

First they came for the jewel case pc games, and set prices at $30.
Then they came for the dvd case pc games, and set prices at $50.
Then they came for the console games, and set prices at $60.
Then they came for all the games, and lumped them all into one big garbage bundle for $20/month.

Only Good Guy Gabe can save us all (sorry Tim & Tim)

Get into what? Gaming?

First of all, there are hundreds of thousands or even millions of games on Apple's platforms. Apple Arcade games are rendered locally on Appl devices.

If Apple got into cloud gaming, it would face the exact same issues as Netflix would.
I don't see Netflix getting into selling physical hardware like Apple, no. But I could see them at least starting a games studio and either doing more Bandersnatch style stuff or flat out cloud streaming.

Depends on how the game is rendered. If they pull a Stadia then you really don't need that fast of a connection more than needing a low latency one.

Apple Arcade? Apple Arcade is “Here’s something to get so your kids will stop spending all your money on IAP and still a wide variety of games”, not “WE’RE THE BE ALL AND END ALL OF GAME STREAMING GET CHER CALL ER DOOTY HEEEEER!”

I think this is one of those perennial things that those not “into” gaming will continue to push as a narrative because to them it’s all “gaming” even though there is very little similarity between Microsoft’s, Google’s, etc. offerings and Apple Arcade.

If Netflix enables gaming on its app, let's see if Apple has the balls to ban the Netflix app.

My guess is that it won't come to this and Apple will allow cloud gaming apps on iOS devices soon.

The individual cloud gaming app rule is just stupid. Apple doesn't require individual apps for every show on Netflix. Why do they need to require an individual app for every cloud game? Makes no damn sense.
Exactly. Apple Will bully small time apps but the big boys are left alone. iOS will fail without FB, NF, Twitter apps. Apple knows it too

They’ve had a “game” before. It was a choose-your-path deal almost like Telltale games, but with video. Maybe they want to stream all the old telltale games? :)

AND the individual cloud gaming app rule is already being followed. It’s actually the same rule for Hitman and Control on Nintendo’s eShop, so there’s a precedent for getting your streamed gaming content on someone else’s store.

Apple Arcade... I haven't heard that name in a long time. Anybody using it?

Yeah, because Microsoft’s small time app was bullied? I actually thought Microsoft was one of the big boys. :) FB, NF, and Twitter would be hurt much harder by trying to take a stand on anything or have you noticed FaceBook’s freakout over the ad changes… and they still stay on the store :) Folks would cancel their Netflix subscription and just go to another app that streams the same ol’ movies and so on.

Them let Apple walk the walk and pull Facebook Twitter and Netflix and other social media sites from the App Store. Say good by to the iPhone.

Won’t happen Apple doesn’t have the balls to do it.

5G tech does nothing as long as your carrier limits or data or data rate (most unlimited in the US isn’t UNLIMITED). US carriers will have to become more like the carriers in other countries.

Yes, it won’t happen because Facebook Twitter and Netflix are going to be good little boys and girls and follow the rules. If they don’t, yeah, they’ll be yanked and their next quarterly profits will be lower and Apple’s will be mmmmm, bout the same as expected :)

"Apple Arcade" in the sense that they have more control over the IPs available through their platform but not in the technical sense I think. Netflix doesn't make hardware. Apple Arcade works because it's a service built on top of their existing hardware ecosystem. It doesn't make sense for Netflix to go into two new already crowded markets (hardware & gaming) at this point.

I think Netflix's gaming service will be more like Google Stadia or Playstation Now. A game-streaming service but with more original contents mixed in with some familiar staples.

I guess the future of gaming is just buying a controller and renting games that you play via internet streaming. … maybe?
