The only exception appears to apply to older Chromecast models without remotes, as well as TVs with built-in Google Cast support. ...

... customer service explained that devices with remotes can no longer cast, claiming the decision was made to improve the customer experience.

So, in theory, they're only taking away the ability to cast where a user has another option available to watch shows on that screen.

Oh, and we should all just ignore the fact that Netflix is heavily monetizing that other option, by charging a higher price to access the tiers which are allowed to stream directly to those TVs... it's (ahem) totally just about improving the experience. It's not actually about the (cough) money, or anything like that. Of course not. 🤨

Not following you here; no tier can cast from phones now, and every tier can still login to a smart tv, tv streaming device and phone.

We have the cheapest Netflix plan that is "free" on our t-mobile account, and it works fine on our Roku TV. Haven't paid Netflix anything directly in several years.

It's because of VPNs. They don't want people to use VPNs, so this is a ban on VPNs for TV because smart TVs are very closed systems and Netflix is mostly used on big screens.

All the steps Netflix is taking are connected to the flawed system of constantly needing to grow. You can't grow forever. You can grow at the beginning by offering a good product, but at a certain point, that's no longer possible, and to continue growing in the short term, you have to worsen the customer experience (see Google search, they can’t grow anymore because they have a high market share so they got the recommendation to make search worse to grow because people will spend more time searching), which in the long term leads to the products/companys demise or go to new markets by offering other products, which Netflix isn't doing or can't do in order to continue growing.

There's a fine line that can't be crossed, otherwise customers will leave, and Netflix is always pushing against this line. Price increases, password sharing, mandated brain rot scripts, and now this. The time will come when they cross this line, and then it will be too late.

Netflix is a questionable company, with a lot of pretty bad content, particularily for children. We cancelled awhile back and don't ever expect to subscribe again. The audio of most Netflix originals is terrible, unless listening with ear plugs or headphones. No great loss.
Netflix is a business with great content and some really nice kids shows. My grandkids watch Netflix kids shows.

Different strokes for different folks.

Can't wait to see Netflix's downfall. Their arrogance is Blockbuster levels nowadays. Would be poetic to see them reach those same levels someday, heh.
The sad part is other streaming services will follow in their footsteps. Making it harder for legitimate and those who want to use these services against the TOS.

You could probably still screen mirror from an iPhone/iPad I’m thinking?

Netflix is proceeding with supreme confidence now. Busting password sharing, very few discounts, cancelling series at will, upgrade to 4K is 7 or $8. They seem to think they’re bulletproof these days.
Yep, they know they can do whatever they want and people will still keep paying them.

Its not arrogance. I though the same thing but its what every company does especially tech companies when they reach a certain market share. They have to grow at all cost otherwise their stock will drop. We saw this over the years and it lead to the demise of companies. Tech especially software companies offer a good product so they grow, but when they reach a high market share they can’t grow anymore so they start making the costumer experience worse since costumers are locked in. It can be perceived as arrogance but it’s demanded by the shareholders.

Their content got worse over the last years because Netflix demanded it. It had good high quality series and now its just scripts made for TikTok users and throw everything on the wall and see what sticks. The next step will be AI slop.

You want to login on hotel and AirBNB TVs?

I guess not, but I've never done that, so... We don't really ever watch tv when staying in hotels and AirBNBs...I didn't even know that hotel TVs had a casting option. Stayed at an AirBNB house in Vegas for two weeks last month and never even turned on the TV. 🤷🏻‍♂️

Our kids love to watch the baking and cooking shows and contests.

I am a buy Netflix when something I want to watch is there to binge and then delete. I am like that with all streaming apps. Never had back-to-back months of any streaming apps, it's a rip off. Antenna for reg TV is getting us like 40 channels. Streaming is out of line noticed they are adding more ads as well.

Netflix hasn't been worth it for a long time. Can't even use the "I'm traveling" option anymore to log into another TV. You pretty much are restricted to your house.

I've never paid for Apple TV - been getting free trials for like 6 years with random things I've bought, and it lets me redeem them every time.

Yet ANOTHER reason to cancel your subscription. It's like they're begging people to leave. What a sad downfall for what used to be such an amazing service.

Not to provide a hotel with your login info.
But you don’t, you just scan a qr code and the app lets “that” tv access your content. Then it disables it when you done watching. No login credentials are ever put into the tv/box.
