Netflix Kills Casting From Its Mobile App to Most Modern TVs

Netflix is a horrible streaming service unless you enjoy them pushing very questionable content!

I go over to a friend’s house who doesn’t have Netflix. I cast a movie from my phone to her TV and we watch it together. When I go home, she can’t watch anything else because the connection disconnects when I stop casting.
So now, I have to log in to the Netflix app on her tv. Which counts as sharing my account and violates that rule.
So I end up paying for her to have Netflix too.
Netflix wins, we lose.

Relax. You can log into her TV, watch and log out. It’s no different to using a hotel TV. You don’t need to pay for an extra sub, as YOU are watching on YOUR account.

It’s way cheaper now to just Google TinyZone and keep your fingers on CMD+W to close the pop up ads and screen mirror to your Apple TV than waste your time with any of these subscriptions.

I wonder if this extends beyond casting - I went to watch a movie just two days ago on Netflix using my iPad Pro. The movie failed to play several times in the app as my iPad was connected via USBC to my 4K monitor. It gave an error message something like “external display not supported”. The movie would play on the iPad screen when it was disconnected from the monitor but would not play at all when connected. I have previously had no issue with playing movies this way, with the exception that I recently upgraded my iPad from iPad Pro 2018 to iPad Pro (M2). I did try changing the external display settings from extended to mirrored etc but it still didn’t work.
The only way I could make this work was to login to Netflix in Safari with my safari window placed on the external monitor. It really felt like a backwards step.

And most of those kids shows are truly evil, I guess we have to live with parents that stick their heads in the sand and ignore what is happening in the world. I hope your grandkids parents can tell the difference.

Anyway if one doesn’t like Netflix then don’t subscribe. It seems they are doing well so whatever the criticism on MR doesn’t seem to hold for the general public.
Yep, completely agree. We have a lot of parents that have been propagandized into the believing that evil is good. While I am not a religious person in any shape or form, I do recognize that evil exists outside the context of religion. Anyone that does not is a threat to humanity.
This is exactly what we do...bring along an Apple TV from the house to plug into the TV where we stay. Basically bring all our streaming services with us!

I wish they'd make an ATV stick (just being HD only would be fine for this I think).
It would be perfect for this type of usage.
Questionable on a few counts in my mind...one, if the account owner is watching, is that sharing your account? And two, do they block you on your first access from a different IP? I thought it was location dependent (your neighbor is still in your location), and only after prolonged streaming from a different location do you get blocked? Many homes internet is dynamic IP address and do change from time to time so streaming once in a while from a neighbors house should not raise any flags.

My goodness they've really gotten quite petty. My partner and I killed all of our streaming subscriptions except for Prime since it's part of the overall membership in 2023 when Disney+ started raising prices and things have gotten much worse across the streaming services with the non-stop price increases and dumbfication of the service to nickel and dime the **** out of everyone. Good riddance!
I pack my Apple TV and an HDMI cord when I'm going to be somewhere for a bit, but that's not always feasible. I'm always travelling with my phone, so removing AirPlay just removes a useful option for some situations.
That doesn't explain why they couldn't leave this as a feature on ad-free accounts, though.

The very least they could do is add a "temporary device" checkbox, so that if you do have to sign in to a hotel TV or whatever, it gets automatically logged out after the number of days you expect to be there.

That is not what I said. Counter to your assertion I said some shows are being purposefully mischaracterized.

My Netflix account no longer exists, so I put my money where my mouth is, and you are not correct the number for Netflix are going down, look at the mass exit because of the Witcher. People are making their voice heard.

Curiously, the "official" subscriber numbers show no such dip -- only continual growth. (Source)
A quick search provided me with the necessary context: in Q1 and Q2 of 2022, they had indeed lost a total of nearly 1.2 million subscribers, but growth during the rest of the year was more than enough to compensate for those losses. (Source)

Screen mirroring switches to Airplay when streaming content and then switches back.
In my experience you will see a black screen with controls on your device and the content will be full screen on the TV. And if you try to use Netflix, it tells you to use app on the AppleTV instead.
