I was a little frustrated by another price hike - the last one had us go to the lower quality version just to keep it cheap. But after the last hike, we cancelled and went for Disney+ for a little bit. But it doesn't have a lot of content, so we are going to can it for the summer and try to get outside more!
 
I pay for Netflix for my parents. They’ve been watching a lot of foreign movies and tv shows which are superior to the American productions. If they didn’t use it so much I would have cancelled it. My personal favorite is HBO Max. It’s the Apple of streaming services. It’s all about quality. That’s one thing that has never really changed. It’s expensive for the amount of content, but it’s well worth it.

Yes, Netflix stuff is mostly garbage, the amount of great series ruined by profit exploitation is mind bending. Hopefully that's biting them as well as the price hikes. They deserve it sooner than later.

That said, they are still light years away from Apple.
I love bobs burgers and lucy the daughter of the devil and home movies, but central park is not agreat show.

Man, I give you that Netflix has A LOT of filler shows, but can you honestly compare Netflix's Top 10 to Apple's Top 10? No way! I still find more entertaining and interesting content on Netflix than I do on Apple, Ted Lasso and The Morning Show along just does not cut it.
It's all about the momentum. What show epitomizes the current direction of Apple? Severance. What show encapsulates same for Netflix? Bridgerton. Netflix execs stated their partnership with Shonda Rimes is the most exciting thing to have happened recently. I'll take edgy scifi over costume romcom.
 
I canceled when the canceled Cowboy Bebop. They always cancel the shows I like.
That show was beyond terrible. Could it have been done better? Shows like Firefly and Farscape and movies like Guardians of the Galaxy (itself largely influenced by Farscape) show that it was definitely possible. It was a poorly executed cosplay parody of the source material.
 
I am one of those that use my girlfriends family account for Netflix. Thing is I can't justify getting full subscription myself as I only binge watch few shows couple of times a year.
 
Jokes on them, the main reason I keep Netflix is because I am assuming that my family members are still watching it. If they block account sharing then I will reconsider.
Same here. If I can't share with my daughter, I'm cutting back Netflix to 3 months per year. What's hysterical is that it's easiest to do this with Netflix, since they are a rare service that releases an entire season at once. In order to counter that, Netflix would have to start releasing one episode per week, like most other services. And THAT would piss off even the most complacent current customer to no end.
 
The problem is that Netflix doesn't have many properties that would make that a sound move. They are ending stranger things, they cancel shows after one season and they have the mantra of quantity over quality. They do get good foreign shows but even that will end when they become too expensive due to competition. Netflix was the middle man who brought many shows to one place but didn't create them. Now that the creators are in the market Netflix is left out of the loop. They would not be a good stock investment in the long run.
I feel that they still have THE name in streaming today, partly because they were the first. But I agree that it is a risky investment. I think they will continue to get hammered, and this will attract the attention of other companies. I think any service that doesn’t have hardware or infrastructure behind it is risky.
 
Yeah, sure Netflix, like password sharing is new. Blame it on the competition and your pricing tiers, which provides higher quality options. Disney+, Prime Video, Hulu, HBO Max, Apple TV+, etc while neither of them have the amount of content that Netflix has, they're pushing higher quality content. Netflix just picks up every show, gives them a first season, cancels 70% of them and so on. I think people are getting tired of that.
I sure am. I mean, I was intrigued by Cowboy Bebop. I liked the first few eps and before I could even finish the season... "CANCELLED".

Netflix's problem is that they let data drive ALL of their decisions and if something isn't an immediate hit, it gets the axe. That, and my feed is littered with Indian and Korean stuff for some reason. Some of that might be good enough to watch but when it just floods the feed it's just noise.

Two issues —

1. Account sharing — this is unethical. It is essentially stealing. People have tried to justify bad behavior since the beginning of time.


Just as in retail, shoplifting contributes to the increase in prices — I would imagine account sharing contributes to increased subscription costs. The solution in retail is to either stop selling the product, or to put a barrier between the product and the consumer. The latter option can reduce sales, but you still come out ahead in most cases.
I'm afraid you have a very narrow concept of marketing strategy, and market signals specifically. When 100 million customers are synthesizing a product package, it's not "stealing"; it's the company just misreading the market. Netflix bundles and price tiers are such a huge miss that people are constructing their own packaging to provide sufficient value. If Netflix cuts those options without making other options available, such as by unbundling multiple streams and quality tiers, all they are going to do is lose customers, and revenue. They will not make it up. Netflix, with their policy of binge releasing, is frankly the easiest service to cut back to cyclic subscribing. This is me talking from 30 years of product marketing strategy experience. Now, in my case, I'm a year round high quality subscriber, but if Netflix just starts cutting into my travel viewing options or bars me from gifting a streams to one of my kids, without providing other value or flexibility, I'm cutting back to 3 months per year. That would then provide me the best value. I'm sure I'm not alone. I doubt a significant number of satellite users on multi-stream accounts have the means to start signing up for their own accounts, frankly. It would not surprise me if the vast majority are either struggling young adults or barely interested secondary users just latching onto a primary.
 
Not saying the TikTok format is a fad, but that Netflix probably won't really make a dent with their kind of content if they decided to make shows in a similar format. 3-10 minute vertical mini series shows don't work very well as heavily produced content as shown by Quibi. Much better to leave it to free platforms with individual creators.
Not that I disagree with you, but the format is here to stay. And with only 24 hours in a day, people pick and choose what content they consume. I'd say the trend is moving more to user-created than perfectly produced TV stuff. Not that movies and shows will ever go away, but I think it's fair to say Netflix is losing subs to "other platforms" -- and not just other streaming services.

Actually, HBO Max is pretty awesome. Gobs of content from Warner Brothers at a reasonable price. I watch HBO Max more than Netflix now.

HBO Max has a strong archive of content from HBO and Warner. Also seems like Disney, Universal, Paramount send a lot of content to HBO as well. It's a strong product.
 
Account sharing is literally the only reason I got a Netflix account... Do they really think shows like Bridgeton/ Selling Sunset would bring them subscribers?
 
  • Majority of content is crap.
  • Good shows constantly get canceled.
  • Other companies no longer licensing content to Netflix so they can put it on their own stream service.
  • Constant price hikes.
Or… account sharing is causing us to lose subscribers. Yes, that must be it.
