I mean they can say that all day long but the fact remains that Netflix is the worst value proposition out there. The content is much lower quality and the price is much higher than competitors. I cancelled my subscription nearly a year ago after signing up for the streaming service when it launched in 2008 for these very reasons. I haven't missed anything and I don't suspect that many who are force-cancelled will be willing to suddenly pay for it. I actually know a lot of people's parents who are paying and once this happens they're going to turn it off because they don't use it much.
Netflix has the absolute worst content of any streaming service and for them to charge $20 + tax + sharing fees is ridiculous. Why people are so willing to pay so much for it is beyond me, but it’s probably the same reason Storage Wars is a popular TV show. Lowest common denominator sleazy entertainment.

The internet whenever this topic comes up: I canceled Netflix over this and don't miss it!

Netflix leaders at earnings reporting time: Our subscriber count went up in the last quarter!

EDIT: Look at all the people who disagree because they’re uncomfortable with facts!

Do they actually crack down on this or is this just something written on some TnC page to scare people but not actually enforced? I have not heard of any of my friends in Spain mentioning / complaining about this

I’m here just for the comments to see how people justify stealing
I don’t know that charging one guy for multiple streams just so he can get UHD is stealing, per se, but it is pretty scummy of Netflix to do it. If it gets to the point I can‘t use all the simultaneous streams for which I am paying, the solution is likely to be to stop using their service, not pay more for the same thing.

So how does watching shows on the go work?

Will people still be able to use Netflix while commuting on the train? What about when they travel and are staying in a hotel?

Or is Netflix becoming cable and can only work at a single service address?

Lets review, no dvd's anymore. probably the dvd's are not going to be streamed. no sharing. oh well. no great loss.
I could give my kids my vpn but I'll probably just cancel. Where I live there is still a dvd rental store.

Tell me you didn't read the article without telling me you didn't read the article.

It is stated very clearly. You will need to establish a "home address" and make sure you connect to Netflix at least once pre month from that address to verify you are using a personal device. So, watching Netflix on the train is not a problem at all or when traveling.

Obvious there is a question about people who travel months at a time (snow birds). But, I imaging that Netflix will be able to tell snow birds from people who just give away their password to their whole dorm floor.

I wish Netflix would not charge more for UHD, but that is their business model. Honestly i think the cost based on number of streams will go away in the near future, assuming this password sharing crackdown works as Netflix expects it.

If you decide to spinoff the other account you need to be careful to make sure they don’t lay claim to the master location by accident as the features are different. They need to logout and use the new account that they create.

While I am now in the US, my account is based in Canada. When I spun off the profile my friend on his TV tried logging in using the cached credentials. Netflix wanted to assign him the primary location which would not have worked for me.

Once we cleared the credentials on the TV all was well.

As I am in the US there was no option in the Netflix app to designate my place as the master.

In the end all worked out. We both kept our viewing histories and all is well.

Obviously this is a YMMV situation, but there is no OBJECTIVE way to say Netflix has the worst content. My wife and I watch more Netflix than any other show. But, we are also not afraid of foreign language shows. There are some really good ones on Netflix.

I share my sister’s account and had been struggling to find anything good to watch. Their original content is almost always crappy and don’t have anything I haven’t already watched from other makers. They used to have a lot of good outside content a few years ago but went downhill since they started focusing on originals and everyone started their own damn streaming service and stopped licensing their content.

I’d get my own account out of principle if Netflix fires the exec who approved their originals. Till then I wouldn’t miss it a bit.

EDIT: I should mention that it’s pretty much the same with every other streaming service as well but at least they cost half as much.

Ok so my wife has an office in our town about 10 mins from our house. We have Netflix on several Apple TVs at home, and she has an Apple TV in her office where she occasionally watches Netflix between clients (and sometimes the kids hang out there after school if she’s there later than school). Can we still do this going forward? Would we have to bring the office Apple TV home once a month to authenticate at our home (which we would designate as our main location)? Or do I have to set up a vpn connection and route the Netflix traffic from the office to our home?

Is that mentioned in the article as well?

One thing I can guarantee Netflix is that my brother and I will cancel our plan, and every single one of our friends are planning on doing the same if they implement this. Netflix sucks anyway, so no love lost. This will come back to bite them in the a** I promise you!

I miss those early days when Netflix released like one Original per month (if that) but then you knew it would be of quality with many seasons to come. Now they throw out so much to see if it sticks. Many shows I don’t even hear about until the cancellation news. What made Netflix so great (compared to prime time tv) was that I did not have to worry about a show I was watching being cancelled. They completely destroyed that value preposition. Now it’s actually worse than prime time tv, at least there you get weekly ratings to see how the show you are watching is doing and you can sort of expect a cancellation coming or not early on

If I'm paying for to stream Netflix on multiple devices, then they shouldn't care what devices as long as they have MY permission to do so.

Netflix reported in the same earnings report that since they banned password sharing in Canada, they have actually added subscribers and the growth rate is now higher there than in the US. They report some initial cancellations as expected but signups by those who were freeloading more than made up for it.

I'd expect the same to happen in the US despite the vocal minority.
Provide a reputable source please.

Tip for those interested in bypassing the BS. Set up your own VPN with a Raspberry Pi and a Tailscale server and problem (presumably) solved for basically nothing. You gotta pay for a Raspberry Pi, but the Tailscale VPN service is $0 per month. Linus Tech Tips recently did a decent video on it. Takes like 15 minutes to set up. VPN works great for me, but can't test the Netflix stuff yet because I'm in the US where there's currently no restrictions.

Like I said earlier, their business, their choice. The consequences will be what they will be. I, for one, won’t pay more than I am now to keep the same level of functionality I have now.
