Said this would happen on the last thread and was downvoted with many saying Netflix would collapse. Convenience wins as I expected, people may not like it but they watch it so will pay. Views on forums do not represent the masses.
Realize that tech blog forums have little to no relationship to the real world.

Netflix would rather have less accounts that operate within their tos than more accounts where stealing occurs. This way Netflix can forecast more accurate revenue numbers and count their subscriber base.
Hate to break it to you, but it's a pretty safe bet that almost everyone (including you) is in violation of a company's TOS. If people actually sat and read through these things, they'd realize just how much you are NOT allowed to do.

Something something "glass houses" something something "stones".

Pray tell, please tell me what clauses in the Netflix tos I’m violating by watching Netflix in my home on my tv.

My kids who used to share my account (because their legal address used to be my home) each have their own account.

My stepmother-in-law has an interesting strategy: I would call it
streaming provider hopping

She subscribes to one service for a month or two and then the next for a time and so on. That keeps the content fresher. It feels like you get more for your money.
Apparently this has been a thing for a few years now.
It’s pretty common, many people do that.

I am sure streaming services are aware of this. Get ready for "contract only" streaming services with cancellation fees.

Well...since I'm not sitting in your house watching your every move, I don't know. But if you paid attention to my post, I said "a" company for a reason. You may be well within Netflix TOS...but are you staying within EVERY TOS you've ever agreed to...and to the letter? If you were to sit and actually read every TOS you agreed do, you might be surprised...

As far as I know, iPhone still generates the most revenue for Apple and it wasn't Tim Cook on the stage in June 2007. 😉

Name one product or service envisioned and realized entirely by Tim Cook without which Apple wouldn't survive as a company.

Case closed.
iPod was $40B revenue in 2011, going down. Wearable (mostly Apple Watch) is $40B today.
Services were not even mentioned in 2011, they are $80B today.
And mac HW design left Jony Ive behind for a completely refreshed team.

Tim for sure did not create Apple, this was the doing of the two Steves. But today he is driving it and he deserves some of the recognition.

This is unfortunately typical internet behavior. Take a situation in the minority and scale it up and make it the general case - especially to deflect in a public forum.

But yes I agree that I’m sure somewhere along the line of my daily existence I violated some traffic law, some tos with some product I own, some tax law, some biblical command, have some HOA violation etc. Was that admission of guilt enough?

This is the part people here seem to ignore. If I'm paying for 4 streams (I'm not...I don't have Netflix)...why does it matter WHERE they're being used? 4 streams is 4 streams...
Because it’s easier to abuse when the locations are unconstrained. Should be easy to understand why Netflix does this, whether one likes it or not.

No, the price of the T-Mobile plan did not increase when they added Netflix, nor did it increase when they added free international data roaming in 200+ countries.

That still doesn't mean you aren't paying something for it. T-Mobile isn't getting Netflix for free and at least part of that cost is being passed on to customers via more expensive plans. If T-Mobile didn't add/include Netflix, they may have dropped the price. They also offer cheaper plans without Netflix (and other features).

Saying Netflix is free is like saying unlimited premium data is free and/or Apple TV+ is free and/or Scam Shield Premium is free and/or voicemail to text is free, etc. None of these things are truly free.

I don't know about others but Netflix is still advertising that you can watch anywhere and everywhere. That is 100% still true if you are using a device that isn't hooked up to a TV like a Phone or Tablet where the IP address isn't being tracked.
If you do use a device designed for a TV experience you get this fancy screen and have to either get a verification sent to your email or text to continue.
So it is definitely adding more hoops you have to jump through to enjoy the same experience as before when traveling.
It isn't being sold as HomeFlix or HouseholdFlix so I shouldn't be tied to my home IP address. It is NetFlix and should still function where I can freely travel without jumping through hoops to enjoy the content because of the device being used.
At a hotel this check-in would happen once unless you get a new IP address each day. You also now need to bring your TV device with you as it has to check-in with Netflix every 30 days. If traveling in a vehicle you could potentially get several IP addresses during a trip. So couldn't use a device designed for a TV experience. This system is full of headaches depending upon your circumstances of where you want to use it. So when Netflix has basically taken made it more difficult to freely travel using their service.
Yep, for a minority of people this tos enforcement will be problematic. I have the same issue with a smart tv in my other home. I may have to wind up by airplaying to the tv or paying the 7.99. I’ll have to see when I get there next.

Here's an analogy maybe you can understand -- Why do all-you-can-eat buffets limit your food to what you can eat at the restaurant? If it's all-you-can-eat, you should be able to take out boxes of food to eat later, right? The buffet would go out of business.

It's 4 streams IN THE HOUSEHOLD for homes with multiple TV's.

Section 4.6: “you agree not to […] use content and information […] from or through the Netflix service” (source).

Sounds like you’re violating the terms by using the service. ;)

Same thing with Meta. Despite the hate he gets on this forum, Mark Z actually knows what he's doing, much more so than Tim Cook.

Knows what he's doing? Really?

In the previous six months Meta has laid off around 30,000 employees - about 1/3rd of Meta's workforce. That's a consequence of poor planning on Mark Z's part.

I'm not an idiot, so you can drop the passive aggressive bs. 🙄

And while that's true, it didn't seem to matter to them until now. Why is that? They themselves even encouraged sharing passwords. A tongue-in-cheek comment on their part? Maybe so. But what did they think would happen?

It’s a marketing slogan. Do you believe they (Netflix) encouraged sharing of their passwords against their TOS? I don’t.
Why is that?
Because Netflix has seen an increase in the stealing of content on their service?

I agree, a marketing slogan that was misinterpreted and worked all too well. And now Netflix is cracking down.

Netflix provides a service they expect to be paid for. It’s a business like anything else, looking to make money. Nothing wrong with that.

What I don’t understand is all the feeling of entitlement. “They won’t let me steal their service so everyone should cancel.” “They sucked anyway.”

No… if they sucked you wouldn’t care that they won’t let you steal from them anymore. If you liked it, then be a decent human and pay for the service that’s being provided.

I’m sure part of the reason why subscription prices went up is because all the entitled brats thought they deserved this service for free so honest subscribers are taking the hit for it.

You like it, then pay.
You don’t like it, then stop whining and peace out.

If a Netflix subscription will negatively impact you financially, you got much larger financial problems. Comes down too, is Netflix a value for me. Many are saying yes, as expected.

My guess is it has to do with how one was raised growing up.

💯 but it still boggles my mind. I don’t know, maybe I grew up in a different generation. Walking around all day during snow storms with a shovel asking people if they want their walkways and driveways cleaned up for a couple bucks. I’d be upset too if they didn’t pay after the work was done.

Please provide documentation to prove this. Otherwise there is no credibility here.

I like how people are now retconning Netflix encouraging sharing passwords, saying it was just marketing and they never actually meant it. Yes, they did mean it at the time or they wouldn't have said it. And yes, they realized they could make more money if they stopped encouraging it and cracked down on it. Both things can be true at the same time.
