I’m just not seeing enough from Netflix to continue with their service. The main shows I watched were all axed because of Disney Plus. A service that will no doubt be what replaces Netflix for me when it launches. Another price hike coupled with cancelled shows is not gonna make me want to keep both that’s for sure.

Damn, price increase plus no more paying for subscription through iTunes for new members so double ouch since you can usually save ~20% on iTunes cards :(

This is why I'm not canceling my Netflix subscription via iTunes until I'm absolutely forced to. Especially since I usually purchase gift cards when they're discounted. Means I save on Netflix, Hulu, and iCloud subscriptions each month.

All in all, I figured another price hike was coming. I enjoy the content that Netflix puts out. But should they ever get rid of Parks & Rec and The Office, then I'll probably revolt.

Does not look good.

Glad I left Netflix... its good for their stock and bottom line... bad for the consumer but there are many options now like Amazon Prime which I like.

Cable just plays too many games. The different contracts you get locked into. Then once the contract ends your bill gets jacked up. Being able to piece things together one provider at a time works better for me personally. If I want to cancel a service for a month or two it is easy to do.
I agree, what shouldve happened first was having all these alt cable companies like PS Vue, Sling etc they give much better value than just a netflix in some ways. we probally are well on our way for this to come full circle and now instead of bundles of channels its bundles of all these providers and literally nothing changes lol.

Well it's only natural the price is going up. It takes a really beefy (read expensive) infrastructure to serve HD and 4K streams to millions of customers. Not only that, but sounds like their DVD subscriptions are going down so they have to offset those subsidies with price hikes on their popular streaming platform. Not happy about the price hike, but it's still way way cheaper than cable so still worth it.

Yup. Just wait until next year when Disney/Fox, Universal, and ATT/WB start pulling their content from Netflix as they launch their own services, along with Apple. Rates will definitely hike again. It's about to get really nasty for them, and their original programming isn't really rising to the level of the other major players, despite spending twice as much as every other studio for employees, properties and talent deals.

raising the price is like rolling the dice

20% hike is unreasonable. While Netflix wNts to fight off Disney etc. the customers they lose or people that may not sign up will not give them the opportunity
10% would have been more reasonable and expected

IIRC, HBO's infrastructure is on BAMTech, which is one of the top streaming video providers. The fact that GoT streamed mostly without issue during last season's premier is work of technical marvel. So I don't think that is the limitation.

I'm not sure if 4k HDR HVEC is something BAMTech is up to speed with in their infrastructure. I found this snippit from a 2017 article "BAMTech is enthusiastic about video technologies like HDR and hopeful that H.265 can continue with its compression gains. But he warned that the ecosystem for making HDR and 4K content is complicated and there are not a lot of great standards for H.265 in terms of distribution."

I suspect HBO just hasn't bothered to master much of their content to 4K yet. I read that the first season of GoT was not shot in 4K, and the UHD release is just a very good upconversion. So I think it's fair to assume most other HBO shows were not shot in 4K. When they have enough 4K content ready, probably all shows released in 2016ish and later, they will update to 4K. I've been told Westworld looks amazing in 4K.

Correct, much of their content masters are not 4K though they can do the easier route of a lot of Hollywood movies and use the 2k digital intermediates for their 4k master and then they would basically in the same boat as many Hollywood movies that come to UHD Bluray.

It is still very cheap. Eventually it will be a cable priced service $40-45 for content. Netflix's costs are going to rise dramatically over the next 2-5 years.
Are you for real? Amazon Prime Video is included in a service that is 70€ per year here in Germany and offers a lot more than just video. They will bleed customers if they increase their price so much. Todays increase seems reasonable. But 40$ per month? Will not happen.

Is it just me or is a lot of shows subtitled voice over crap on Netflix. Seems like everything that looks good I start watching and I get voiceover acting and I just can’t deal with that.
I like the original shows Netflix does but these foreign voiceover ones are just horrible to get into.

Agreed. Max people will pay without dropping is 20-25. That’s still pushing it.

If Netflix keep coming up with original content like Bird Box then it's probably worth it.

They spun off the DVD-by-mail business years ago.

In all honesty, Netflix original content are today’s b-movies. I would prefer seeing good licensed movies distributed by Netflix than their originals which more times than not are just fillers.

Agreed. Most of what I watch on Netflix is slightly older TV shows. Netflix has forced themselves to increase prices by making an absolute crap-ton of low-level content. Was anyone asking for this much original content? I'd rather still be paying $10 and get less 'Originals'.

Not surprising. It’s obvious that Netflix’s current pricing was never sustainable to begin with, and they can no longer rely on growth alone. With new entrants like Disney and Apple entering the fray, Netflix needs more money to find original content and raising prices is really the only way to do so.

It is sad to say, but I agree with the posts about Netflix's originals being unimpressive, at least some of them.

I like many of them, Hemlock Grove, HoC, The first season of OitNB, Stranger Things, Knights of Sidonia, Travelers, all the Marvel ones, a few others. But, hardly enough for me to keep a subscription base only on the original content.

It is sad, because in the beginning, it seemed like Netflix had much better originals. Once they started popping them out once a week, it seemed like were starting to put out some turds.

I think Sense8 was the first one that I remembered being pretty bad, and I had high hopes for that one. The concept was cool, but the execution, especially the dialog, was horrible.

Same here. If you prefer movies over TV shows Netflix has become worser over the last couple years. They filled their servers with mediocre movies and TV shows. Sure there are some really good movies like "Beirut", "Mogli" or the horror comedy "The Babysitter" but why should I watch "Scary Movie" (released 2000) or older Adam Sandler movies :)eek:) a 3rd or 4th time? Even "The Rock" (one of my absolute favorite movie) I had watched very often (and around every two months one of my tv channel will show this movie anyway).

At the beginning Netflix was a decent online video library with random movies but I always found something I liked (and haven't seen yet). But meanwhile most of the good Hollywood movies are gone, leaving only low quality content. I'm not willing to waste that much time searching for good movies and risking time waste by watching crappy movies or TV shows (which I have to stop after 1/3 of the movie/episode).

Last price increase for me. If they raise them again I'm out!

True it’s not great. But like my sluggish smart tv, once you’re in the content you’re good

at least they are honest with ratings

instead of these "related to your preferences" percentages that are arbitrary and algorithmic tuned to recommend Netflix content you have no actual interest in watching, and designed to mask the crap quality

Depends on the platform...on Apple TV you can't even seek/control playback properly, and Siri doesn't work.

I think that the tvOS's version of Netflix is worse when it comes to UI, but the ATV's Prime Video kinda sucks too. Especially when it comes to organizing seasons of TV shows.

Idk about organization, but Amazon is literally a web app on TV and looks like it.
[doublepost=1547592037][/doublepost]
No it's not. It is the most reliable and easy to use for me. NF app is the worst forced loud autoplay trailers and shrinking credits both you can't still turn off.

You can't skip/rewind 10 seconds or scroll scenes with the Siri Remote like you can in every other app. Amazon literally broke content playback...idk how anything can be worse than that.

As a Canadian... finally they learned to raise prices for someone else for a change.

We got a 30% bump starting the his month with only about a months notice.
And they've raised rates several times the last few years, not to mention we have less selection than the US.

All I know if this happens again I'm going back to piracy, Netflix is forgetting what made them popular.
