It's incredible how little so many people value their own time and attention, that anyone would even consider paying around $8 to watch ads when they could spend just a few dollars more per month to skip them.
I really only watch movies during long winter nights so I shy away from subscriptions. I also value my time so I mainly watch iTunes rental movies.

$15.99 no ads, 1080p

$9.99
$14.99

After a year, it'll be the #1 plan. Other streamers either offer ad-lite for a lower price rom the start, or added them later.

You think its silly, but its not for many other people.
I can tolerate amazon giving me a super quick SKIPPABLE commercial and then leave me be for the rest of the show.
Also, comparatively speaking, Prime is quite cheaper than even the ad-supported Netflix plan (and it comes with all the other benefits of prime).

I can relate. Except for the occasional new movie or series when I am in the mood for one and actually have the time to watch, I mostly rewatch my favourite old sitcoms (which I've already seen thousands of times) during the little "winding down" time I have these days. Most of which I had already bought on DVD and ripped to Plex many years ago anyway (which is also partly the reason why I ditched subscription tv around the same time).

Apparently no one read the Bloomberg article because nowhere does it say that this ad-supported and discounted plan will be in 480p. Nowhere. Yet people here are assuming that it will be.

Multiple other sites are reporting that the ad-supported service will be limited to 480p.

Considering Netflix wants almost $16 for 1080p with 2 simultaneous streams, offering 1080p for the ad free tier seems dangerous to me as I would not be surprised if a significant number of people currently on the Standard plan do not need 2 simultaneous streams nor download a significant number of shows.

So if they can save half in exchange for watching four minutes of ads an hour, I could see a not-insignificant number of current customers on the Standard plan moving to this new one, which would impact Netflix's revenues in a not-insignificant way.

The money tap is drying out, everyone is looking to squeeze the last drop from the market by any means possible.

Really a sight to behold

It’s basically the same as cable now. Every major broadcasting company now has their own streaming service and it holds all of their catalogue, and it’s monthly just as cable. Think about it…ABC has Disney+, NBC has Peacock, HBO has HBO Max, CBS & ABC have their own subscription services. Then you have Prime, Hulu, Netflix…and many people subscribe to more then one. It’s basically become the same as paying for cable now.

Netflix just does not get it, other streaming services are cheaper for ad-free 4K HDR, but may charge more for more people using it.

I keep trying to tell them I just want a reasonable price for streaming ONE device at a time with the highest video and audio quality. They should change it so you pay more for streaming more than one device at a time, so a single device tier, two and four at a time.

The tiers they have now don’t make sense anymore, this old way doesn’t work now, the tiers they have now has a lot to do with losing subscribers. The y need someone else in the marketing department

You can’t just keep the old tiers and just increase prices, that’s how you lose people. Adding ad driven tiers will ultimately hurt them because they started the whole ad-free streaming to begin with.

It’s all just dumb. They need a whole new management team.

FYI they are still the largest streaming service, but now there is some real competition. Reminds me of the days when iPad went from being the only tablet to having competition but still having the largest market share.

9$ and 480p while they make even more money from advertisers? That’s down right offensive.

I watch netflix daily but I still wish them the worst. Their PR is tragic. I hope they don’t get away with that. Until then, they only see Mexican pesos from me

More people should cancel service. I had Netflix streaming since it debuted in 2008 and cancelled it a few months ago. It's all a bunch of originals that suck. I haven't missed it one bit, and I'm still behind on shows with cheaper streaming services like Disney+ and Apple TV+ which is included in my Apple One. Basically Apple TV+ is free because I was already paying for 2TB iCloud, Apple Music Family, and Apple Arcade for my kids ($30/mo, the cost of Apple One, which is a great deal since it also includes News+).

I've also decided to play video games more in my spare time instead of watching the stupid crap on Netflix. One of the best deals out there, IMO, is Xbox Game Pass. It's $10/mo and you get access to nearly 500 games, including a lot of new releases from all of the studios that Microsoft owns (which is a ton nowadays) and a few other companies. My kids have really gotten into it too as they've started playing games, and I've picked out some kid-friendly titles for them to enjoy like puzzle platformer I am Fish, which they love. Normally I would spend more than $120 per year on games, but with this, I've played dozens of games that I never would've tried otherwise for less money and it has expanded my horizons. This is great for me as I used to be a pretty good competitive FPS player and now that I'm getting older I'm getting slower so I'm playing more non-competitive games and games with my kids.

So theoretically $8.99 for ads and $1 more for no ads? Doesn't make much sense. They'd be smart to start at $6.99, but it doesn't seem like Netflix execs are that.
No, by the time this comes out, the add-free tiers will be this: 480p $14.99, 1080p $19.99, 4K $24.99. So $8.99 makes perfect sense to them, lol. The fact that they charge extra for 4K in 2022 is already terrible, but the fact that they charge more for 1080p in 2022 is disgusting and insane with a base package that is 480p like late 90s cable. Speaking of the late 90s, I feel like they're about to Blockbuster in a few years.

It’s basically become the same as paying for cable now.

Sure... but only IF you subscribe to EVERY separate streaming service every month. Who does that? :p

At least with streaming you can pick and choose the streaming service(s) you want at any given time. You don't have to subscribe to Netflix and Hulu and Disney and Apple and Peacock and CBS. With no contracts you can come and go as you please.

But with cable... you're stuck paying $80/month for too many channels and you have to use a crappy DVR box with ancient software. Their practice of "bundling" means you're getting 125 channels whether you want them or not.

Don't like sports? Tough! You're paying for eight sports channels! And plenty more channels nobody wants!

But none of those cable channels let you watch Stranger Things, Ted Lasso, or any other streaming original series.

:)

“I’m cancelling if there is ads!”

- People who still don’t get that this is a new tier and ads won’t apply to them
Until next time they’re in need for more money and they increase the price of all subscriptions so the ad flooded subscription will be as much as the current ad free.

They have saturated the market, but wants to keep growing and growing. Only one way to achieve that

Netflix is planning to charge between $7 and $9 for its upcoming ad-supported tier, according to a new report from Bloomberg. Netflix's current lowest-priced plan is $9.99 per month in the United States, with the plan offering 480p streaming.

netflix1.jpg

Netflix also has a $15.49 per month plan for 1080p streaming, and a $19.99 per month plan for 4K streaming. The lower-cost ad-supported tier is aimed at those who don't mind ads and who do not want to pay $9.99+ for a standard Netflix subscription.

Ads will be shown before and during TV shows and movies, and Netflix plans to sell approximately four minutes of advertising per hour, which will be shorter than the 10 to 20 minutes of commercials per hour shown by cable companies. Customers will not be able to skip ads or access playback controls while ads are playing, but Netflix does want to limit ad targeting and make sure ads are not too repetitive.

The ad-supported tier will have more restrictions than more expensive tiers, and Netflix does not plan to allow customers subscribed to the plan to download TV shows and movies for offline viewing.

Netflix has turned to ads because it has not been able to maintain subscriber count. The company lost subscribers for the first time in 10 years in the first quarter of 2022, and blamed "a large number of households sharing accounts" and "competition."

Netflix is aiming to introduce the more affordable plan in limited markets before the end of the year, but a full rollout may not happen until 2023.

I mean, this is the reason why it was important to have one big, affordable player in the online industry. Why go through the trouble of pirating when you could have it all for ten bucks a month? It works for avid music fans.

They forget about piracy when they consider these prices and how much competition there is now. Everyone and their brother and their cat has a streaming service these days, and it all behaves differently or looks differently if you dare to travel abroad or share your account with your sibling.

I still buy my movies through iTunes (not that the last two year have been kind with the dearth of production). I know I won't have streaming services forever, but I will have those movies forever.
Steve Jobs did say that he’d “finally cracked it!” When it came to TV. I do wonder what he had in mind & if any of it is related to the Apple TV app. I doubt it’s anything to do with Apple TV+.

I’m going to start purchasing stuff I want to watch on the iTunes Store/Apple TV more. It’s cheaper in the long run. I’ll only subscribe for streaming services when I have a lot of originals on one to watch in a month of two.

I’m starting to not like having to binge non-originals before they might disappear or to get the most for what you’ve paid. It’s better to watch it at your own pace with it being in your own library. This of course requires you to store it offline somewhere in case it leaves the iTunes Store/Apple TV completely (with no iTunes in the cloud option), and I don’t mind that. Some think it’s annoying, which is kind of why streaming took off.

I don’t care for Disney+ originals, so I’ll just continue to buy the classics I like. Once the price of Disney+ goes up with ads in Europe, I’m cancelling it.

It’s a shame you can’t purchase Apple TV+ originals through the iTunes Store/Apple TV. I’d paying anything to own the Ted Lasso series.

Netflix could offer cheaper plans if they did not waste so much money on overpriced content. Some of their $200 million movies are really not worth it. $450 million for two sequels of "Knives Out"?

People have been associating ads with free. I don't know if anybody would buy into paying for ads. Spotify with ads is free. Various Chinese streaming services (weTV, iQiyi) have free tier with ads.

Or, it's an upselling strategy. Netflix content library is huge, so some people might want to check it out and get the lowest tier with ads, but later they get annoyed and upgrade to the regular tier... :D

Funny thing is I cut back on my Netflix and didn’t know it reduced me down to 480p but the last laugh was my Sony up scales so well it looks as good 85% of the time as it did before.
With the current cost of living crisis so many will just get rid of these services.

The sad thing that is other companies will eventually do the same thing, even Apple.

My guess? $6.99 or $7.99 (same as the Disney+ with Ads plan) with ads, 1080p resolution, and limited to 1 stream at a time. Don't want ads? That'll be $9.99 for the basic plan (480p resolution and 1 stream at a time). Want no ads and a higher (1080p) resolution? That'll be $15.49 for the standard plan. Want even higher resolution and more than 2 streams? That'll be $19.99 for the premium plan.

Just one thing... 1080p isn't a higher resolution than 1080p.
