Wow and I thought broadband internet service was bad in US. That is horrible  I pay about $40 for unlimited 1/8mb unlimited cable internet. You won't be able to watch netflix streams in HD with your connex.

They aren't yet able to get the mega-loons to fly any faster.

The same week Netflix announced they were bringing their streaming service to Canada Rogers quietly reduced the allotted data usage

It's not so bad, they charge an extra $1 a GB until you reach a cap of $25 then it's all golden after.

I regularly go over the 25GB . So essentially for an extra $25 a month you get unlimited downloads.

The same week Netflix announced they were bringing their streaming service to Canada Rogers quietly reduced the allotted data usage for most of their internet plans. i believe someone did the math already and that 7 or 8 movies a month would use up all your allowed data.

there are going to be some very disappointed people who will blame Netflix when Rogers' draconian usage policies are the problem. With Comcast a basic plan provides 250GB per month. Rogers is living in the 20th century.

I've got Telus TV, or I guess Optic, or what ever the hell it's called now. No limits, as far as I know.

Great for Canada!

Awesome. I hope Canada also gets the DVD delivery soon.

But, how come Puerto Rico and US Virgin Islands get DVD by mail... but no streaming?? They say it is Hollywood and their policies. I say.. BS. I bet that of they make a couple of calls to the right people, they could stream to PR. I mean, HULU and many others have no problems streaming to PR and USVI, why can't Netflix try harder?

Why won't it?

Because we can really only have the Series 2 TiVos up here (our cable companies won't do CableCard, while in the States it's the law to provide them), so we're stuck with Series2 hardware, which in turn can only support one codec - MPEG2. Netflix Instant Watch is not compatible with MPEG2.

That looks like an awesome service.. I have a question though, lets say I wanna watch a tv show on netflix will it only be online once a dvd is availabld for it or would it come online episode per episode as they are aired until the whole season is on it?

If it's they do it like the second way I mentionned they've got a buyer, if not Ill stick with Megavideo lol.

We actually have had DVD delivery for a while now, not from netflix of course, but from a company that runs a site called zip.ca.

I haven't personally tried it because I don't think they offer a buy option and if I'm only renting, Videotron has a great VoD service.

What plan do you have? Do you have a contract? I have Extreme 10/1 95GB cap and an overage of up to $50. It used to be $25 but they increased that a while back.

I recently signed up for a 1 year contract on internet for a 30% discount and I am wondering if I will keep 10/1 95GB or be switched to the new 15/1 80GB plan.

If Rogers switches me to the new plan can I cancel my contract with no penalty?

Forget Rogers. Teksavvy is the best.

Unfortunately Rogers is wiping the $50 for unlimited off soon:

$50 will get you 200GB max.

I was all pumped about Apple TV in Canada until last night. Bought a season of TV shows at about 7:30, and I wound up going to bed before the first HD episode turned up. Never had any problems before, but now I think Shaw is throttling iTunes @ 300k/s max. I can grab any random file and hit 6 MB/s, but all iTunes downloads never pop much above 300 last night and today. I think it is on purpose, since shaw has just launched a view-on-your-computer VOD service. Probably had a look at their traffic shaping software, and made some changes to shaft the new Apple TV on intro. Too bad the CRTC does not go after this stuff.

The new Apple TV will be useless if you can't stream.

I'm so glad I have an unlimited plan from Teksavvy (that as far as I can tell is actually unlimited, considering the plan below it offers 200 GB/month). Canada isn't so backwards if you don't go with a crappy mainstream ISP.

Too bad my DSL is acting up right now (probably Bell's fault, they really don't like the other companies on their line). I can't wait until their cable service expands more.

All that said, I can't wait for Netflix to launch here. I know selection may not be that great for instant streaming, but whatever. I can't wait.

Yeah, it's not backwards that you need to get a 5 mbps connection to get unlimited downloads.

My ISP still has unlimited bandwidth following every single ISP in this country going that route (then again, they are a local co-operative). I'll be checking the service out for atleast a month on my iPhone when the service is out - assuming Rogers 3G finally comes to town here. I'll find a way to keep myself sane while on those long trips to the city.
