I predict by 2020 Netflix will lose so much money that they will be bought by some big company like At&t, Apple, Verizon, Comcast, Amazon you name it.

Amazon already does this with their rather abysmal video service. I guess its time to dump both and just use iTunes.

Why would someone buy Netflix? Those companies you list could sell an equivalent product without having to buy it. The onLy reason to buy Netflix would be the in house production capacity.......hmm, the very in house production capacity that Netflix is wanting to promote through inter-episode advertising! Sorry, I meant promotions!

They are promoting other content within Netflix.

They aren't showing commercials. It is PROMOTIONAL VIDEO.

Example: You just watched an episode of The Office, now a video runs with the credits for Parks & Rec. Or you just watched Stranger Things and a video runs promoting Orange is the New Black.

Understand? They aren't commercials. They are PROMOTIONAL VIDEOS for their current content.
Call it what you want, but it a frog disguised as a prince is still a frog.

It would probably not be a bad idea for some of the people calling the shots to be replaced with ones from countries and/or backgrounds where one didn’t grow up around an advertising panel that screams lies and colorful flashes at them every time they got into the filler (actual shows, perhaps even ones worth wasting time on). Then they’d perhaps have some idea of just how jarring and unwelcome this move is to us.

On the bright side, if this rolls out to us and customer support doesn’t have a way to deactivate the problem / feature, the miss will finally be in agreement that it’s a worthless subscription (there are a number of more pleasant ways to numb oneself to life), since what we pay for is what the product lacks and should lack: aggravation. Until the 4K AppleTV rolled out, we’d buy the disc and download the rip minus often unskippable “previews” to actually watch. Then iTunes provided a less aggravating route to the same content at full quality. Netflix lost my interest with auto play (and with sound ffs), now they’ll probably save me the money (a pittance, but still a vote cast with the wallet).

Very, very few movies and/or series are worth running into this preview of life as the product that pays for shelf space and rough handling, and Netflix only has like three of those, if I’m generous with two, all of which are also in my shelf in BD.

Guess Apple isn’t the only company to have forgotten that “premium” isn’t a materials choice thing, but rather the intangible virtue “it never bothers me and always does what I expect it to in the most boring and timely it-just-works manner possible”. Netflix doesn’t have $1T to float on while they figure it out, though.

This is like the airlines that use the seat back screens to play ads for the airline you're already on. I don't get it. I've made my choice and I've chosen you-- how can irritating me possibly lead to a better outcome?

Promo's are ads. I am sick of ads. Even public stations play them. Example you are listening to WBGO support is from Ford cars buy one today example that is a ad.

"PROMOTIONAL VIDEO" = ADVERTISING

WE ALL UNDERSTAND WHAT ADS ARE, THANKS

Nope.

Promotional video for content ALREADY MADE BY NETFLIX shown ON NETFLIX is unpaid and not a paid advertisement.

This is the equivalent to watching a Marvel
Movie and at the end they say "The Avengers will return!" It is part of how corporations promote their own product on the cheap. As in zero dollars.

All they are doing is recommending other shows on their service for a whopping 30 seconds. Maybe you'll find something you like.

Amazon Prime already do this kind of thing, it’s irritating. They all seem determined to ruin the experience. I don’t want automatic skipping of credits, I don’t want ‘helpful’ age ratings appearing, I don't want auto-playing video when browsing. I just want to browse or search for titles and play when I press play, and not show me anything else or assume ‘knowledge’ of what I want. Arggh.

It’s like they have bored UI designers who have to keep meddling to justify their jobs.

Then just download everything and keep it on a hard drive/cloud and you'll never worry about it again.

Otherwise, this is life. Business makes the world go round. Get over it.

Yes, these are called commercials.

No they aren't.

While you are correct in the most technical sense, please differentiate for us between "Promotional" and "Advertisement". I ask b/c from my perspective - and apparently many others - the net difference is zero. Doesn't matter if they are getting paid by an external entity or are just pushing their own content.

The difference is that the promotional video they are showing between content is for current contwnt on Netflix. You are already a subscriber and they want to recommend content when you have a down moment.

They aren't trying to sell you anything, that is what a PAID ADVERTISEMENT aka a commercial is.

If they wanted you to buy a product (or pay for another service they offer), THAT is a commercial.

Think of the things that run during shows on HULU.

If you were listening to your favorite radio station, and they said "listen Friday for the XYZ Show", that is a PROMO, not a commercial. They are trying to get you to use their content longer.

This is what Netflix is doing.

When HBO does it, same thing. HBO is a PAID SERVICE and they are trying to get you to watch their content.

Sorry but NF is just getting worse. If they love to push there stupid original content everywhere then why bother license anything else. Just just go 100% originals and be done with it. Let the great licensed content go to the other services which already have much of it.

It’s bad enough I have a trailer blasting in the background if I pause a show and can only stop it if I close the app down. But to add in having to sit through an ad, not something that remotely appeals to me between episodes is just one way of sending me to even Hulu (not a big fan of them) or even finally use my AmazonPrime video stuff.

But, Netflix has been itching to raise their pricing for a while. Guess this ensures they get their way.

Do not show me ads unless you are doing it as option that I can choose to lower my monthly payment, but is must be OPTIONAL.

Hulu ad free is great. Just one short network "You are watcing Nick" example and that's it. Not NF "BAABOOM" which one time scared my cat when I forgot to mute it before hand. So if they start doing that "BAABOOM" crap during licensed shows by playing there stupid original junk without your permission would be a good time to drop this horrible company.

Are you always that passionate about stuff like that?

And please define the difference between "promotional video" and "advertisement" if we take just one thing out of the equation: i.e. that it is their own content. What's the difference?

BTW before your edit: Please be civil in your language.

This is not as bad as everyone is thinking. There are no "commercials" and you physically have to interact with the menu.

1. Your "binging" continues in 15 seconds automatically.

2. The only "advertisement" is a side scroll interface of what ever show they want to promote.

3. You physically have to use your remote to select the show they are "advertising" to play the trailer or add it to your list. Otherwise your current show continues to play
Hey, there's still space for 10 more ads - I mean promotional videos... ! :D

Just wait for it. :) Remember those nagging "update to the newest iOS messages?"
They could do that too for other things... ;-)

You sound petulant because everyone else refuses to abide by your (and Netflix's) idea of an advertisement.

You sound like you are in the ad-business and feel pinched.

Are you a Netflix employee or an (M)ad-man? I ask because you are calling people here stupid because they won't agree with your shouting insistence.

BTW before your edit: Please be civil in your language.

Yeah, learn to be civil while debating.

oh boy, it begins... now shows promo, then washing agents ads than new more expensive plan if you don’t wish to watch those ads. I swear to God if they start to post any commercials I will cancel my membership immediately

I'm not repeating what I already wrote.

It's simple: Seeing upcoming content on a service you already pay for is a PROMOTIONAL VIDEO, NOT an advertisement. It isn't a commercial. Period. End of story.

Do some research and learn the difference.

I know I’m probably in the minority, but I’m kind of looking forward to this. Sometimes I feel overwhelmed with all the content Nextflix has to offer, so maybe this will expose me to new shows to binge.

I’m pleased for you. If Netflix gave us all the choice about all their various features and UI decisions everyone could be happy.

They can run a previews "show" all the time, their model allows this. It can be 2 minutes, 5 minutes or 30 minutes long, I don't care. If that exists, then I can choose to go to it and click and sit and watch their promos for the rest of their content, and then CHOOSE to watch any of the shows they promote - tag them for later use.

Never for the in-between episodes adverts, no matter who gets NOT-Paid for the effort; I am paying to NOT see this crap, as I am forced to in regular TV.

See my repost of how their content can be researched voluntarily.
